I think it just started (and is still used) as an insult, but people are trying to take the sting out of it. Personally, I am just a proud member of the Grammar Police. :3

i never used that, i thought the right/more common term was grammar police, but the term grammar nazi never bugged me. any more than the other terms used, but I knew someone in school whos grandad was a nazi(ex, i mean, he hadnt been/hasnt supported it since the end of the war) i think that affected the way i see nazis. i see them as people who blind themselves to problems with their country in an effort to have the country gain strength more than i see them as people trying to make everything the way they see as right and get rid of people they see as wrong, although both were done so maybe even people who dont get uneasy about the term should keep that in mind for the sake of people who do.

Honestly, when I'm writing online, I don't mind it if someone is my living spellchecker / proofreader, even when I make a comment. They do my work for me! lol
However, I hate hate hate that term. Grammer Nazi. I've chewed out more than a few people before for using that. Nazi's were evil bastards to be nice about it. Being so light and calling a living proofreader a 'Grammar' Nazi just makes me want to go up to the person and smack them across the head with a rolled up newspaper. you know... one of those really THICK ones. That'd hurt a LOT.

*SWACK* OUCH!!

She doesn't make a very good Grammar Nazi. If what you're referring to is an inanimate object, its is the correct phrasing.

Eh? That's a new one. But she did cut him off early, it could've been right depending on what was going to come next, "its going to be awesome" - wrong, "its (the comic show's) ratings are going to be high" - correct.

That, however, isn't as short and to the point. Hmm...

See, that's why I hate that term. Actually, I hate pretty much anything that compares one group of people to Nazis. Is that one group of people committing genocide? No? Then there is no reason to compare them to Nazis, unless you're trying to make light of what they did to people and/or use the worst insult possible.

SeaShellQueen In reply to ??? [2012-11-01 20:02:54 +0000 UTC]

I thoroughly dislike the term "grammar Nazi." While other terms are better, the problem is those other terms have yet to catch on and are unlikely to. I also dislike how some people think they know how to correct another's grammar, but they often don't know more than a few rules of grammar. I like the idea of your comic, but I think a large number of people misunderstand that this comic is arguing about the use of the term "grammar Nazi" rather than proper usage of grammar. The comments here are pitiful and lack proper grammar- even those that try to pass themselves off as grammar lovers. I hope future comment makers think before they add a comment.

N.B.: Apostrophes are used according to American rules. Nazi is capitalized as it is a proper noun, but grammar is not because it is not a proper adjective. Since "grammar Nazi" is a slang term and I've yet to hear of it being admitted to any respected dictionary, I do not consider it a proper noun when its individual words are used in conjunction.
