Okay, actually, I shouldn't say staple. It's featured in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword gives him the Fireshield Earrings, which are red. As for the Hero of Winds trilogy, I don't know, I have not played.

But yeah, Link's had earrings in OoT, TP, and SS. Can't say about the Hero of Winds trilogy, and the horrendous art of the original 2D games featured no earrings (not to mention, the sprites were not detailed enough to distinguish any)

If you read the official Orcorina of Time comic then you'll see that Empa gave Link an ear ring. it was to show that Link was a true warrior to the Sheakatah clan. (please tell me if I spelled anything wrong)
