Description
"Reservations for Two" is my latest painting that portrays some familiar themes and compositions. I intentionally wanted to continue painting story lines that unfold on an old world street scene. The painting began as a sketch from imagination and I did not intentionally set out for a particular storyline, but the end result does allow the viewer to "project" onto the image. As the painting was progressing I could see a potential story, so I decided to name it in a rather ambiguous way. Degas once said, “A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, and some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people” "Reservations for Two" can be viewed through a literal or psychological lens, depending on one's perspective. From the technical end, this acrylic painting was done through a brush and pallet knife leaving an impasto/textured appearance. Although I originally referred to my style as modern day Impressionism, I have come to see it more and more as Expressionism through the reliance of bold colors, contrast, and images that take on symbolic or emotional feelings. In this particular painting, I tried to balance not only the physical appearance of darkness and light, but also the psychological states as well.
As an aside, the name of the restaurant in the image is called Sabina's, this was a tribute to a wonderful Italian woman who created meals not only as a means of nourishment, but also a way of bringing people together.

Very good work. I have added it to my favourites folder. I took this to be an Impressionist piece, by the way.
