How can you tell the difference between a spilled cup of coffee and a message from God? When does one be me the other?

It's a metaphor

Well clearly. The question still stands though. At what point do you know your coffee spilling has turned from an accident, to a message from god? Or are you just imbuing your spilled coffee with your own imaginings?

I think the point is not that you spill a cup of coffee and cry out that it's a message from God. Of course it wasn't God who spilled the coffee, it wasn't Him who made the mess. Rather, I believe that God can use that mess; He can turn anything bad in our lives into something beautiful or something we can learn from. This is my experience and this is what the bible says .

Yeeeeees. None of that has escaped me. My question is "How do you know it's a message?" as apposed to you just imposing your own imagination or hindsight.

I'm afraid I can't give you an answer to that that will satisfy you. Because you don't always know. Sometimes you miss one, and sometimes you see one where there isn't one. It says in the bible "my sheep know my voice", refering to the metaphor of God as a shepherd. So, the better you get to know God, the better you will recognize a message from Him. I have been very sure, and sometimes I don't know, and in that case you keep asking "is this from You?" until you get an answer that you understand. And I always have so far, but sometimes it takes time.
But actually knowing or recognizing the voice or message from God comes only from the Holy Spirit, who is part of God and something of a mediator/interpreter.
But I'm guessing that doesn't satisfy you? It doesn't always satisfy me, either We all want a voice from heaven with clear instructions now and then, because then I can be sure and you can think I'm crazy
But that's not usually how God works.

The messages within the meds are the most beautiful. When I was in a trench I was told by a wiser Christian that if God brings you to it. He will take you through it!
