Bleh. I messed up ROYALLY on the background. When I use open canvas, everything goes onto one layer - as in, background, foreground... EVERYTHING. And after looking at the image when I finished coloring the whole thing, I changed the background. Soo.. now it's stupid looking. >>'''' Anyhoo. Not happy with this image. Not at all.Oh, and I hate grass, too.
Anyhoo, the city in the back is, well... Hmm. How to express what this image means. >>''' Ook....
The city's reality - how the world IS. It's just... there. On the outside... it's all dull; boring... listless. (My brother says it's like Townsville from PPG..
;; )The unicorn is imagination... what we want the world to be like, our dreams.... basically, abstract concepts which I can only think up words for in Chinese.
Think up your own retorical questions - I sure had tons when I was drawing the image.... "What do we really want? What's worth going for? Imagination and creativity color our world, but what is really there?" Bleh. I'm too lazy to bother with typing them all out.
Don't look at this as an image - look at this as a message.

Reminds me of the first draft of the novel The Last Unicorn; originally it was the black road (highways, symbolizing man's development and progress) that chased off the unicorns and not the Red Bull.

Aaaand I really hope you don't mind, but we had to do an in-class project in our illustrator program, and I borrowed your picture, since he told us to just pick one off the 'net. It isn't going to be published or seen by anyone but my classmates and the professor, but I still felt like a dirty art thief. I did leave your copyright...signature...stuff, though.
Anyway, I finished it, so if you like, I'd be happy to show it to you next week, when I have access to the school computer's again.

When I saw this I immediately thought of the movie The Last Unicorn, where the unicorn leaves her forest to find the rest of the unicorns. There is a song in it called "Walking Man's Road," and this made it pop into my head.

I love it. On this I must type some coherent comment, I guess. It made me think of lots of things. First of all, The Las Unicorn, such a great movie. Second, before reading your description I thought of a nostalgic and kind of hopeless unicorn... observing the city coming up to where it is, and the imposibility of doing something about it. Like she already knew this would happen. I don't know how to explain it.
And then I read your description and I totally loved it. It's really hard to explain, but it just touched me, I can't say more.

Oddly enough, what struck ME first about this is not whether or not it signifies hope or despair, or imagination. It seemed to be a story within itself, for the majority of human legends tell of all the beauty, of all the wonderous magical creatures retreating, and moving to a new place... A new world. I guess it's always an idea I've loved, since I hate to think that there never WAS anything so beautiful intermixed with the banality of our existence. and yes, I know that dragons, unicorns, gryphons, and belike do not exist outside of our imagination, yet, isn't it better sometimes to let yourself get lost in that illusion? But I lost myself. What I was TRYING to say is that it seems like the unicorn, though she left our world, is looking back at what we have become with regret. Or, perhaps, wishing she had stayed and tried to make things better. Either way, there's a sad wistful quality to the picture that I just can't get around.
I think it's gorgeous, anyway. Kudos!

love the whole concept--except when I first saw it, I thought it had to do more with
industrialization and pollution--that sort...but I think the two interpretations sorta blend together, don't you think?

What struck me the most about the painting was ofcourse : the idea. But after some pondering,I wasn't able to figure out whether it was reality seeping into fantasy or vice versa.
The stance of the unicorn suggests that (as you said to ~lugia ) it's reality eating away at the fantasy.
But wouldn't it be beautiful if it were the other way round? A little bit of fantasy and beauty creeping it's way into a morbid reality? Instead of the unicorn signifying fantasy...what if it signified hope? The road seperating the Unicorn from the city suggests just that. Anyway...I'm a bit of an optimist so I always try to look at the brighter side of things.
The image is very provoking and powerful. The background doesn't at all look bad.It's blurred...smoggy...dark and hiding terrible secrets within itself. The Unicorn is white,noble,beautiful and striking,the swirling mane giving it a dream like quality.
The clouds are aptly coloured purple.I couldn't have suggested a better colour myself.The shading on the unicorn is very nicely done and does not have any dark qualities about itself.
And yes...even the grass looks beautiful!

Very true. The unicorn was smart by leaving the city. The city is full of monotonous tasks and drudgery. Plus really annoying people. The unicorn left behind a sad existence for one of fantasy, and in its wake left a city full of mourners. Mourning the loss of creativity
