When I originally did this piece, I didn't have a strong sense of drawing the viewers' eye to intended subjects in the drawing via color intensity. Looks like I spent more time on the color treatment of the elephant rather than the man - or more likely, that I hit everything in the piece with the same color intensity.

i never really understood why he had to prop himself up while sleeping, but the ending gave me the idea that he wasn't supposed to lay down normally.

More than likely, his head was so seriously deformed that - despite the additional weight - his airways were as such that any sort of position other than upright would have constricted his breathing. Add that to being asleep, and.. well, you know the rest.
I have a hard enough time falling asleep in cars and airplanes. Hard to imagine not being able to sleep while lying down.

That is so sad... I just read Joseph: A Victorian Fairy Tale, which discusses his past and links to the Jack the Ripper murders... It is an awesome Gothic novel.

Reading the book about Mr. Merrick just made me bawl. Knowing the story and about his manner of death...this portrays that perfectly. Lovely, grotesque, and downright sad. Very good work.

wow, great job on this and the other Merrick drawing (I don't remember if I ever left a comment there or not). Great inclusion of the stuffed elephant along with it... very powerful statement with that. Maybe only one criticism though: I would try adding bit more contrast just to help the eye divide up the image a little more.
