Description
"Mr. Treves.""Hmm?"
"There's been something that.... I've been meaning to ask you for some time now."
"What's that?"
"Can you cure me?"
".....No....... no; we, uh.... we can care for you, but we.... We can't cure you. No. "
".....I thought not."

Ah great work! Great film-one of the only movies that can make me cry like a little girl.

Such a wonderful piece. You really captured the compassion in Treves' eyes & the hopelessness yet understanding of Merrick. The small details really make it work even more successfully, like the hanging painting, bright overexposed light in the window & the church in the distance.

Sadly there is still no cure for Proteus and no known cause. All they can do is try and stop it getting dangerous and make the person comfortable as possible.
Probably the best thing we can do is see the person inside.

my highschool did a stage production of The Elephant Man, and it was a tear jerking emotional play, but it was beautiful. I personally was the prop mistress, so i had to build the church, and i am so pleased to see you drew that in! GREAT JOB!

The conversation adds so much to the picture thats for sure. The two sitting across from eachother. Treves is nervous about his answer, but Merrick has already come to terms with his fate. Well done. It made me sit and think of a past I was never a part of. Have a good day

The expression on Treves' face is so... almost calculating, isn't it? And though Merrick's face is partially eclipsed by his condition, there is still something distinctly saddening about it. On a technical level, I like the "overexposed" window - it gives an additional photorealism to the picture, even though it is clearly drawn.

very sad and beautiful in its sadness,
your art is so much different from everything here, i've known ir since i saw your piece inspired by "Archipelag Gulag" by Solzenicyn
and your distutes you lead in your journals are so strangely fascinating

You always leave the best comments. And I am extremely glad that you like what is here, both in the art and in the journals. :]

Brilliant atmosphere. Are these true real historical people? Or are they literary characters?

Sorry for just up and replying, but they are real people. Merrick, aka. "The Elephant Man" was a real person who suffered from a terrible disease. It's not certain which one it is, as it's so rare. It's actually still up for debate, but you should read up on him. It's very interesting stuff.
How he died is the saddest thing...

I did some reading, and you were right, it is very tragic. I beleive he had what is called the Proteus syndrome. I'm not sure if its an inbred genetic trait or something related to alcholism during pregnancy.

By wanting to sleep, like normal people, so I understand. Apparently, the weight of his head was excessive, to the point where it constricted his air pathways when he would lie down.
In the bg, barely visible, I rendered a drawing that he had made and hung up in his room: A child sleeping with his head resting on a pillow.

Very touching. Very real. I'm glad you added the conversation to it...otherwise the impact would be lost.

A very touching conversation between the two. Though it is very odd how so much money goes into cancer research and they come out only with a painful cure; Chemotherapy. I tend to like the colors you used. Gives it that hopeless kind of mood and almost a awakening / settling feeling. Good work bud!!

Wow. I've read much about Treves, amazing work. It is saddening that he was so discriminated for his deformities. Very amazng art.
