SHEKELESTAN - VARYAGIAN WAR, 3450 - 3460.

The conflict between the Varyagian Union and Nation of Shekelestan (Jauna Zeme Desert Nation Alliance) started in the late 3440's, when Kasparov CIA was presented with the difficult task of extending its branch into the more desert regions of Jauna Zeme. While some of the Jauna Zeme Desert Nations fully agreed and others greatly limited the use of artificially-grown humans, offering profitable, yet sometimes sketchy trade contracts instead (like oil and drugs; mostly opiods), Shekelestan, which was a strictly theocratic nation, abiding by the Holy M'ushaads (scriptures) of Aq'Wah, outright declined. What initially was supposed to be a regular decline of an agreement, soon turned into a rather tense interest battle, since Kasparov CIA spies had uncovered information that Shekelestan was in possession of about 95% of valuable resources of the region, and recovering them would aid developing the other JaZeDNA nations, thus guaranteeing a strong foothold for Kasparov CIA within the region.

When trade contracts with other JaZeDNA nations failed to bring Kasparov CIA the resources they craved, the mega-corporation officials began flirting with the Jauna Zeme superpowers; mainly the Varyagian Union and the United Continents of Liberika. Liberika refused to carry out military operations in JaZeDNA region, on the basis of JaZeDNA being an important trade partner with Liberika, but the Varyagian Union agreed to help out Kasparov CIA, on the condition that they will provide them with artificial humans, and other developmental goods, since the further northern regions of Varyagian Union were also in dire need of development.

Under the guise of "assisting the impoverished people of the neighborly Shekelestan", Varyagian Union sent in 'civil aid' caravans, which were supposed to give drinking water, food and medicine to the more rural parts of Shekelestan; instead, the last few trucks were actually filled with Varyagian Special Forces troops (VSF Covert Operations Unit "Hatchet"), which successfully infiltrated the Q'Aval Palace, and arrested the government under the accusations of them actively aiding the illegal import of opioids into South-Varyagia with an intention to weaken the Varyagian Union as a whole. Soon after, a puppet government was installed in Q'Aval, and the capital came under the Varyagian rule. For a while, the people of Q'Aval were successfully kept isolated from the rest of the Shekelestan, and the Varyagian-aided trade of Shekelestan's resources with Kasparov CIA was beginning to take off. Any attempts to inform the outside Shekelestan, and even the rest of Jauna Zeme officials were hindered by Varyagian spy satellites, spy network and sometimes, physical extermination of whistle-blowers.

However, even these measures could not guarantee the information being kept in its intended circles. As the word finally got out around late 3448, the Shekelestan military still loyal to the arrested monarch Sha-Al' Avraham Bahar began the armed counter-movement to the Varyagian puppet government in Q'Aval. In a surprise attack on the New Year's Eve in 3449, the Shekelestan counter-movement managed to deliver serious damage to one of the key outposts on the road to Q'Aval; the rural town of Del-Kirhi. Varyagian Union, now backed by Kasparov CIA, declared a war on Shekelestan for killing about a hundred Varyagian Special Forces soldiers, and began actively sending out conscripts, and war equipment to the JaZeDNA nation.

The war itself was as ugly and racist as it could possibly be. The propaganda machine on both fronts did their best to demonize their enemies, and this was the reason, why atrocities and war crimes on both sides were quite commonplace in the conflict, often going to such ridiculous extents as a sort of a one-upmanship of cruelty. In one such attack, Carlson Mindag - an Albertonian and the drummer of the West-Varyagian rock/new-wave band "URAGAN" - got gruesomely executed by a direct Shekelestani artillery blast. In faint hopes that this "would tug on a more patriotic string in the lazy youth of Varyagia", the Varyagian recruiting offices began using this fact to rally up saddened, angered and confused fans of the rather popular band to go on a revenge strike on the Shekelestan people. While some did indeed join the Varyagian Forces to avenge their idol's death, most of the conscripts were confused, scared and rather unwilling to go to a war that was caused by the power and resource game of their politicians.

Here we can see a West-Varyagian conscript Pyotr Shiskinsen (3440 - 3459), the sole survivor of a recon mission to the Hill 652, photo taken October 10, 3458. He later fell in the Siege of Salladabshad, April 26th, 3459. His body was never recovered, though one of his comrades, who survived the battle, yet lost the left arm and half of the lower jaw, recalled Pyotr's last words: "I want to go home."
