"Private Pehterys, pull yourself together! You're a soldier, soldiers don't cry!"

"Where's my papa, Kahrly? Gueeeh!"

The other little Latonijan boy, who was wearing a Latonijan soldier's helmet several sizes too big for his own head, shook his crying 'brother-in-arms', despite tearing up himself:

"You gotta be a big boy now, Private! And I order you to stop crying, baww-baww!"

"Where's Mommy? Buuh!"

Kahrlys only hugged Pehterys and forced him to look away from the crowd carrying a cheap pine-wood coffin and a traditional Latonijan grave marker. While Pehterys wailed loudly, Kahrlys only wept silently - or tried to, anyways:

"Buuh... We must go, Private! We must be on our way to big ship!"

Despite the two sobbing boys standing in the very middle of the thawing road, nobody ever seemed to care. The column on the left side of the road, which consisted mainly of deserters of both the Latonijan loyalists and Latonijan national partisans among the civilians, was exchanging quick greetings with the civilian and former soldier column going the opposite way. For many, this would be the last time they saw their fellow countrymen again, as the left column was heading for the seaport town of Brihvbanga, in order to escape the Latonijan war zone and surrender to the West. They feared going to the nearer country of North Varyagia, as it was rumored that many of the former Latonijan officials, as well as some of the Latonijan secret police officers had emigrated there, and would 'definitely try them as traitors of their own country', despite the whole war in Latonija being as an attempt to overthrow the oppressive government in exchange for something better. But, as such was life in Latonija, these hopes did not come true, and the remaining Latonijan population were on the run for their dear lives.

In the column heading for Brihvbanga, one soldier was chatting with another deserter:

"Any news about our countrymen, who already escaped?"

The other soldier sighed:

"No, not that I know of... Oh, wait, there was this one crazy group of about 60 Latonijans, who hijacked a fishing vessel in Kaklarags, and tried going to Taipania."

"And? Did they manage?"

"Not sure. There were some news that they got caught in some nasty storm, or something, and got dragged off their initial course."

The other soldier raised an eyebrow:

"Damn. Did they die?"

"Don't know, man. All I know, is that the fishing vessel 'Kalmahrs' they apparently stole, got beached on the shores of Chalane, where the local authorities are now sorting them out."

"Chalane? Shit, that's in South Liberika! How did they manage to stay alive all that journey?"

The former Latonijan loyalist soldier frowned:

"Beats me. The program was all in Chalanian, and with lots of static over the sound. I still hope they're all okay. They're still our blood and soil, y'know."

"Definitely. Hey, by the way - did you notice two kids in military wear just a few meters behind us? Weren't they lost, or something?"

The ex-Latonijan loyalist looked back, but all he saw, was just more dirty, tired and sad Latonijan faces:

"It's probably the malnourish kicking in. Just wait a little; I managed to save up half a potato from two months back, so you can have it."

"Ugh..."

"I know, it's not exactly a five-star meal, but with a bit of salt, it will taste decent."

"And... Where will I get salt?"

"Just cry on it, for Laima's sake! Geez, are you a true Latonijan, or what?"

The civil war in Latonija, which started in June 3458 and was largely over by June 3459, had claimed almost 30,000 lives, made about 50,000 missing and about 500,000 Latonijans emigrating the country, never to return.

The little Ambercoast nation of Latonija was nearing its extinction.
