I've got a lot of little catches like these throughout the entire story. Once-Ler says something and then later on, gives an extra explanation.
I also figured that although Ted has learned a lot about selfishness and greed through the Once-Ler's story, he's still a kid, and kids demand to have better explanations than "burned all of my money." I figured he still has to get out of the old Thneedville vibe of wanting everything, so yeah.

Also, it's that kids try and look at things the simple way at times. Burning your money doesn't seem practical and so you wonder why?
I'm with the Onceler on this one, though I gotta say... since dollar bills aren't technically paper (they're actually some sort of cloth or something)... I hope they didn't produce any kind of problem with smoke.

Ted's reaction was pretty much universal. I don't think just kids ask "WHAT?!?!?! YOU BURNED THE MONEY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" though the onceler did have a point, burning money seems a bit extreme.. .

Personally I think I would have donated it to a charity or something over burning it, but I get the message here. He wanted to do something meaningful to signify the break with his past self, an "I am no longer that man" moment.
Ten virtual bucks says there's a creepy looking Santa decoration hiding out in that attic though. Watch out Ted!

Poor Once-ler, he really still feels bad about the past. Glad guilt isn't a literal weapon, otherwise he probably would've died years ago. Like right after Lorax left.
Say, are you going to explain how Norma knows about Once-ler in this comic?
