I put this together since I've gotten a few questions on how I go about designing and um... yeah! I really hope it's helpful to someone out there.Update: Hey guys! Touching on the silhouette thing, for a lot of game design if they are trying to create a creature but have absolutely no or vague idea what they want it to look like, they'll have an artist draw hundred's of just plane silhouettes (no details in mind just simple ones) and choose the most appealing out of all of them and work from there. So if you're trying to come up with a basic look of something you're drawing, that's something to try out
Source so I'm not just flappin' my mouth. This discusses the difficulties of not only character creation, but making it a playable aspect AND already working with a general look from the history of the games as well. Looooots of things to think about:

I know lots of people can like, slap some sort of a shape on canvas and refine it and trim it down and sort of work the opposite way that I described here. Silhouettes are amazing things.
