I was asked about my work process, so I decided to try and do a step by step tutorial.Its my first time doing something like this, so I'm sorry if its not well organized. I hope it can be of some help though.

Hey Nick, quick question when you're doing the shadows and highlights do you have to make those layers preserve transparency on that layer as well or is that only for the "main layer"?Β

Hey Malcolm!Β Sometimes I set the shadow layer to preserve transparency, but its not something I usually think of when doing it.Β The only thing I do for certain is link the shadow layer to the main color layer.Β I treat the highlight layer a bit looser, since its one of the very last things I do.Β I don't usually link it to anything or preserve transparency on it- I just loosely shape it, and lower its opacity.

There is an option in the "layers" tab.Β Its a little button that looks like it has a kind of checkered pattern.
What it does is: it locks your layer so that you will only paint within the areas you already filled.Β You don't have to worry about coloring outside of your blocked in colors.
