I've been struggling with panels, so lately I've been drawing pages sans lines and just putting them in after the pics are laid out. But I really like how dynamic yours are

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this! This is wonderful! It isn't something that's explained very often anywhere, so I was thrilled to have stumbled upon it. Thanks again!

Both parts of your tutorial are amazingly helpful!

Do you have any tips for sizing the panels on the page? Somehow whenever I draw panels on a page (and I do this with a T-Square 'cause I get confused just using MS Paint) I end up putting it too far or too close to the top or sides of the page. I still new at this so all I'm used to is filling up the WHOLE page or in small randomized sketches. d:

If you ever get the chance, try looking at paper designed for making comics. They have, in faint blue lines, the guidelines you need. Deleter is a good company that makes them. ^^ If you can't get a hold of them, They may have the templates online.

I would personally recommend giving yourself an indent of a quarter of an inch to a half an inch, depending on how large your paper/canvas is.

This is great. I always get stuck with panel design.

One thing I can't quite do yet, is fit more than 5 panels on a page (I read somewhere that the maximum number of panels per page is 8). They just get too small for me to draw in them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kikirini In reply to Mintoons [2009-07-12 12:47:59 +0000 UTC]

That's why it's good to plan out panels before drawing, and to give them a good amount space each before drawing in them.

just-a-web-artist In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-20 01:02:47 +0000 UTC]

HMM...so what's part two about? More page designing? ...can you do a toning/nice inking look tutorial? -__-0 I have some comic pages that needs more experienced look.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kikirini In reply to just-a-web-artist [2009-02-20 01:07:14 +0000 UTC]

The part two will be about designing the artwork within the panels.

And sure, at some point I'm sure I can cover toning, but I'm not sure about inking. What is it that you have trouble with, regarding inking?

just-a-web-artist In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-20 01:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, just, I guess, line weight? Or the varying thicknesses...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kikirini In reply to just-a-web-artist [2009-02-20 01:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I'm still a little unsure... as in your lines are too thick/thin, or they don't taper as you like? Sorry if this is frustrating. XD;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

just-a-web-artist In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-20 01:45:10 +0000 UTC]

No, no, it's fine. Just, like, all those artists have certain areas thick, and thin and it looks cool. Like...here: [link]

Your hands are thick and thin at certain areas...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kikirini In reply to just-a-web-artist [2009-02-20 01:47:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh. Then, how the lines taper (go from thick, to thin, and so on).

Are you using a tablet when you draw, or do you draw traditionally?
If it's a tablet, then turning on pressure sensitivity is all you need.
If traditionally, then putting weight down on the pencil at certain points achieves this effect.

just-a-web-artist In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-20 01:49:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm using a tablet, so that helps Thank you!

Wow. XD I'm glad it's so helpful.

I'm going to make a part 2, so I hope that's as helpful. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InnocentxGuilt In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-19 22:18:01 +0000 UTC]

It is very much so!
I just draw panels according to what I think looks appropriate and stuff but I'm not sure if it's the right panel to use for that scene.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kikirini In reply to InnocentxGuilt [2009-02-19 22:20:41 +0000 UTC]

I do the same, quite frankly. XD And you can usually get away with it, as long as you're keeping basics in mind - big panels for important stuff, small panels for less important things. XD The big thing is designing the panels' contents. DX

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InnocentxGuilt In reply to Kikirini [2009-02-19 22:45:16 +0000 UTC]
