Description We all like to pretend that we don't judge things for their appearance anymore, that we have learned the lesson of Freaks, The Elephant Man, Edward Scissorhands, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Warm Bodies, The Shape of Water... when in reality it's all a lie. Why?
Let's be real: we're not afraid of big furry beasts, werewolves, creatures from the black lagoon, deformed people or zombies and vampires played by hot actors.

...But clowns?

"KILL THEM WITH FIRE!!!" instantly.

Like, even towards clowns that do nothing wrong and we're not necessarily phobic of them, we're immediately intimidated and feel uncomfortable at the mere sight, even if they're not harming anyone, just pure irrational fear like they're worse than Satan or a cosmic Lovecraftian horror.
Truth is, judging from the exterior is still a thing when it comes to clowns.

What a strange paradox. We're not afraid of monsters and creatures designed to be scary (fucking Creepypasta killers get more love despite the awful things they do and what they are), but figures that are meant to be colorful and cheerful are seen as uncanny and distrustful, even if they're just trying to entertain and are not evil, they were NEVER meant to be evil, at some point people just decided to view and depict clowns as monsters and little else. But again, it wasn't always like this for clowns.

My latest invention (which I haven't found a good title for yet) is essentially a "don't judge from the cover" story, but with clowns.
In this story clowns are their own separate species instead of humans in makeup and costumes, and the way they're treated through the fictional history of the story's setting is pretty much a huge metaphor of how clowns have been treated over the years. I really want to explore how these views have changed and all these strange paradoxes, pointing out these little truths about ourselves and this whole ordeal that I haven't seen any movie or work of fiction do.
We've done evil clowns to death, from criminals to monsters to aliens to demons... but all the monsters have gotten a "subversion good guy" story, but clowns have not, and again, for very curious and paradoxical reasons nobody wants to bring up and discuss.
I see this as a goldmine for an original idea that uses some formulas of the "subversion don't judge from the cover" stories but with something that will really give it a new spin and make it feel fresh. And I'd ACTUALLY have to make my audience feel and care for a bunch of clowns.

My two major inspirations have been Watchmen and the recent Isle of Dogs, the setting would be this exaggerated alternate history where clowns are either hiding or are hunted down and moved to a huge island of trash, but I'm figuring out ways to use those premises executing them differently.
I can already tell you that a big chunk of the story would be backstory of the main characters and worldbuilding/lore about what kind of creatures clowns are, their history and the things that lead to this anti-clown dystopia.

A concept like this would be enough to carry an entire movie on its own, or in this case, an entire trilogy.

I think one of the big reasons people are freaked out around clowns is that whole John Wayne Gacy thing from back in the day. You know, that guy who dressed up as a clown and killed all those kids? It was a sensation, and really damaged the cultural image of the clown. I think it would be cool if you maybe addressed that? Like yeah, the clowns are repressed, but there are actually bad clowns out there. Like you know, it's not all black and white?

In this story there will be no references to pop culture or "real people", since it's set in another world were clowns aren't human but their own species. Like, at best there's a clown that resembles a bit Pennywise or Koko or another famous clown but, like, there's no Stephen King or "real" horror movies about clowns in this story's setting.

But the biggest thing that made the Clowns repressed is pretty much a metaphor of the John Wayne Gacy thing. In this story the Clowns are more meant to represent the image of the clown, and the way people treat them and use their image stands to how we in real life changed the way we use the image of the clown.
Now, I can assure you that it's not entirely black and white, there ARE good human characters that stand up to the injustice, and there are Clown characters that aren't 100% innocent or merciful, but I wouldn't like to get into spoilers.

Great ideas, cool concept, id give suggestions of how you can do one bit but unfortunately im not sure if my suggestions would work. My mother would be proud though, she loves clowns, she really hates things like pennywise and killer clowns from outer space, doesn’t like it when they depict as villains....

FINALLY! I can't stand people who keeps saying that all clowns are evil, killers, creepy and so on! They were meant to be funny, and that doesn't mean that there can't be an evil clown sometimes (for example Pennywise), but saying that all clowns are killers that makes me very disappointed.

Btw XD supercool work and concept! :3

I didn't think clowns could work in a gritty environment, I am glad I was wrong because this looks great.

Well Joker is a clown and he worked well in that environment.

Considering that if the Joker himself can work, then I say it is possible for this concept to work.Β

I think people are scared of clowns because they unintentionally have an uncanny valley effect. Or it could be the idea that something is cheerful on the outside to hide horrors behind a mask.

Horror movies are certainly taken this concept and ran with it. (admittedly I did really like it 1990 and It 2017).

As someone who fears some ventriloquist dummies due to the uncanny valley, I saw a couple of clown makeups I found offputting, but again, I like it, it actually requires me to grow a pair and practice the "don't judge somebody because they look scary" lesson.

Now, just because I feel like clowns deserve some respect, that doesn't mean I'm against evil clowns from this moment on, I still love me some Pennywise and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, just like how we can have vampire villains and vampire good guys, it's all about balance.

You...bring up a good point. We've become less judgmental about some people/things, only to gain a blind spot to other people/things. It's as I always say, the biggest problem with human beings is our lack of balance - always too much of one thing and not another, and when we try and correct it, we always go too far the other way. The example I use, as a Christian, is the Puritans vs. the Unitarians. It's either death, Hellfire, and "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", or literally don't talk about anythingΒ remotely critical of people's vices, in favor of sunshine, rainbows, "Why Can't We Be Friends?", and "All You Need is Love." Never the healthy in-between.

Rambling aside, man, I'm really curious to see where your idea grows and develops from here. Glad I started following you more recently.
