Lol you asked for some constructive crit... well...
The girls hands are much too large, unless you intended them to be that way, although it looks incorrect. They also do not appear to be "holding" the cat very hard- they need more curl, more grip. Her face is also oddly masculine- the nose is big for a woman, and the chin is very square, masculine traits. Tone these done to make them more feminine.
The cat is a bit malformed- it's front legs are certainty broken like that, the shoulders need to be pushed back to match the angle of the head, and the elbow to paw length could be increased. The back foot also blends straight into the cat's behind, I would use a line to separate the two. The toes on the front paws are too large, and the left paw looks very deformed. His fur is also very spiky, which is ok because he's afraid, but usually only the back arches into such extremes. The face is ok but the ear (even with the angle) looks too small.
The monster looks AWESOME, it's clear you put a lot of love into him. :3

The muscle and the flesh on the creature look great! As for the girl and the cat, her hands are fairly large in size in comparison to her arms. It looks more like a stylized feature in this picture though than an error, so I guess it'd be up to you whether you'd want to change it or not.

i'd have to know you better to guess at the symbolism, if you're a romantic sucker(like the good majority of DA) then perhaps it symbolizes the things a person must sacrifice in order to maintain a healthy relationship, what is okay to sacrifice - the desire to have a pet - in the face of a greater danger(the beast), the destruction of your relationship. that's my first guess, give me a little feedback and i'll change my angle, i'll bet you i can get it eventually.
