Description

The Ekosin are a sapient insect like species hailing from the world of Dakusakuro, a planet located in the Crux arm and part of the Garician Worlds, best known for its extremely hot climate and dense atmosphere.

The primary that Dakusakuro orbits, Tardsead, is a G type which has moved off the main sequence and started to slowly inflate into a red giant- in the last 50 million years, it has increased in size and brightness by an estimated 20%, pushing the habitable zone outwards. The planet, once a thriving garden world, has thus since transformed into a world with an atmosphere nearly six times as dense as Earth, with an average temperature of 76 Celsius- most of its oceans have boiled away leaving only small seas- the surviving bodies of water are nearly constantly steaming, saturating the atmosphere further with water vapor. The few lifeforms that have adapted to the new hellish environment are but a shadow of the past- most plant life has died off and barley anything can survive on the surface- instead, most of the biosphere is underground, feeding of a species of fungus that thrives in the heat.

The ekosin are not one of them- insect like but without a distinct separation of its three main body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), with six limbs and a hardy exoskeleton. The exoskeleton has evolved to smoothly and seemingly cover their bodies in order to protect them from the hot atmosphere; their head features only one set of eyes, small and set in, covered with a permanent transparent eyelash to protect them from intense heat and vapors, their back limbs have evolved to allow for bipedal movement, freeing the two forward limbs to allow for minute manipulation; lastly, the abdomen part has become mainly a storage organ for water- though water is still abundant, most of it is far to hot (often close to the boiling point) and thus undrinkable- instead, the abdomen absorbs water vapor through condensation and stores in as a type of blubber.

Like the underground life, the ekosin consume the fungus which thrives all across the planet's surface, covering large swats of the rocky terrain in a mold like substance. The ekosin gather in large groups and graze on the mold, moving across systematically to and from different feeding zones- as the fungus's spores permeate the air, there is little need to worry about future food as the mold grows back at a very rapid pace and the digestive track of the ekosin deliberately expels any spores out and are thus a minor important part of its life cycle.

The ekosin society has never had any kind of leadership or hierarchy- everyone is out for themselves and there is little need for cooperation and congregations except for protection against the very few predators. The vast groups could grow to millions strong- the only time they remained in one place for long was to procreate, laying eggs in nest and moving on, leaving a few thousand individuals behind to act as guardians until they hatched fully developed and would join the herds. Over time, in order to protect the nests the herds elected to build veritable fortresses around the nesting ground for protection- over the millennia as the guardians duty became full time, the fortress became veritable cities, although few and far between with varying degrees of sophistication and advancement. The most advance of these was Kinakal, which around 8200 BCE had a level of advancement similar to pre industrial Earth. Around that time, the ekosin- specifically Kinakal- were marked for uplifting by the aonosians, who spent the next two centuries slowly rising their level of technology. While the process was interrupted abruptly with the aonosians' extinction, the council that controlled the city, who the aonosians contacted and used as proxies, were given enough information to continue, and elected to accelerate their species advancements on the basis that the star's and planet's days were quickly numbered.

The Commonality was created around 7500 BCE with Kinakal's first interstellar flight, uniting the other cities under its rule in order to continuation the species and save it from the dying world. Numerous colonies were founded and the Commonality grew in size fairy rapidly as the vast majority of ekosin were evacuated to other planets- in time as they made first contact with other species and began conflicting with some, the Commonality began to increase in its aggressiveness eventually rose to become a major interstellar power, though after establishing itself started to soften to its neighbors and eventually became a founding member of the Rendanor League, fighting firmly on its side. The Commonality, in tune with the species lack of a defined hierarchy, can best be described as a democratic consensus, with every single citizen, even alien, not only able to but obligated to participate in the government in some form or another during their lifetimes or loose their rights and be expelled from Commonality territory- the idea, for the ekosin, being that refusal to participate in driving civilization means they have no interest or right to benefit from any of its benefits.

Be it a position in the military or local planetary administrations, every sovereign citizen of the Commonality has been a government employee at some point, but the Commonality' most impressive feat is the decision making process of the Senate- or what passes for it: every citizen is required to carry with them at all times a small communication device connected directly to the Senate, and any major decision such as declarations of war decided by popular, majority votes by at least three quarters of the population. With critical decisions that can't wait for days as the votes are gathered, the Senate can instead take initiative and do what must be done to preserve peace and security- which is technically its only role, though it has gained other attributes over time- but afterwards the population must vote to continue the action or not.

Suffice to say, a population not willing to go to war for an ally can lead to the frustrating situation where the Senate elects an emergency deployment of forces only for a popular vote to quickly force them to stand down, resulting in no small friction with the Commonality' 'allies' in the League. That being said, when push comes to shove the Commonality has always elected to come to its allies aid and rarely if ever backs down once it dose so.
