Description

Valurt

Hailing from the planet Rethade in the Perseus Arm, not far from the script homeworld of Shreyk, the tall, bulky sapient predators known as the Valurt are the dominant species of the planet, known for their extremely dangerous, volatile nature. Their government is known as Vasa'Sul, whose closest translation would be ''Cartel'', an alliance of several of the larger clans who use their powers to dictate the otherwise divisive and scattered clans of Rethade.

Physically, the valurt are tall, standing up to two meters high, with an average muscular, bipedal body, two large arms with four fingers, two of which are opposable, their legs similarly presenting four digits. Their large head sits on a thick muscular neck, presenting two eyes and a large mouth filled with serrated teeth. Horn like structures above their eyes, two on each side, act as an additional sense capable of detecting heath and changes of pressure in the air, giving the valurt a fine sense of spatial awareness. A thick hide protects the valurt from most physical damage, with some places, such as the neck and head, extra defended by a bone like armor with numerous spikes hard surfaces that makes it difficult for other predators to hold on to if attacked.

Having evolved in the Rethade's numerous savannas and prairies, the valurt skin features various shades of brown with light camouflage patterns, which are unique to the regions they hail from and individual clans.

As a rule, the valurt are hardy, stubborn creatures, quick to anger and slow to trust, but loyal to a fault. Their tempers are infamous through the galaxy, and in combination with their strength and endurance makes angering them a very bad idea.

The valurt are pack hunters, having evolved their social structure around loose nomadic clans scouring their territories for food; these clans can grow to large numbers, with thousands of members, each lead by an alpha, whose position was more or less for life, as the valurt have an deeply ingrained sense of loyalty to the authority figure.

Not many of these clans have ever settled down, however, and the valurt having a noticeable lack of sedentary civilization up until recent history. The few cities that did arose would go on to make most of the advancements of the species, becoming the center of their civilization up until the Great Clan War that swept the planet around 1000 BCE. Not much is known about the War, as a disturbing amount of history was lost during this period, including its true length and what caused it. What is known is that nearly every single clan participated, arranged in three alliances that sought to control the city states and their wealth of technology and science.

When the War ended, every single city lied in total ruin, with most of their populations scattered across the world as refugees, with tens of millions of people dead in its wake. Several clans arose to prominence afterwards, and were the founders of the Cartel. Seeking to avoid a repeat of the deadly conflict, the Cartel ruthlessly suppresses the other clans, using the various defecting scientists from the cities to reignite the progress lost during the war.

The valurt made first contact with the script around 750 BCE, when they had began rudimentary space travel. The Cartel began to become less and less oppressive at this as the influx of new resources allowed for the creation of a new wave of permanent cities and lessen the stress from the inter-clan rivalries. The Script Freehold provided a tremendous amount of help through the years and has been vital to changing the Cartel from an authoritarian regime to a more free society, to the point that the valurt have willingly vassalized themselves to the larger power to preserve the new order. Millions of valurt migrate into Freehold space each year, having become the Freeholds second largest demographic after the native script and one of its prime allies, securing the Freehold's rimward borders.
