Description

-referal names: The Boogeyman, L'Homme Bougie, The Bugbear, the Monster under your bed/in your closet.
-Given name: Jean-Charles Bougie (pronounced: Jon-Sharles Boggy)
-W:4--L:1--F:2
-Serial No. 00765
-Team: Onigumi [link]
-Height: 6'3"
-Weight: 220 lbs
-Age: Unknown
-Birth Place: Rural France
-Weapons: The Fang of Horror (Cleaver) & Terror's Talons (Gauntlet)
-Likes: the dark, preying on the phobias of children & adults alike, & nursery rhymes.
-Dislikes: the sun.
-Fav. Entry line: "Child, You shall never sleep again..."
-Fav. Exit line: Now you be a good little boy/girl"
-Country of Origin:Rural France
-Alignment: good [---------------|-]evil
-intelligence: Diabolical
-fighting style: Unknown, he's extremely unpredictable

-notable info: A murder of crows follow him everywhere (some seem to have a strange syndrome similar to rabies, but it doesnt kill the host. Which makes them attack any living thing close to Bougie for reasons unknown), has a small fasination with bugs (may use them to invoke phobias), is right at home in the dark/shadows & can use it/them to his advantage making it seem like he's vanishing. Is some what of a vantriloquist & uses this ability often to frighten his human prey. He surgically removed his lips in his grief in an attempt to ease emotional pain at one time.

-Personality: semi-serious, almost no morals, believes he has lost his humanity, that he's a monster & thus has the freedom to kill anyone, like a beast he believes himself to be... often heard quietly singing nursery rhymes to himself from the shadows.

Backstory: In the 15th century (1400) France, Jean-Charles Bougie returned from a business trip to find his family slaughtered in cold blood. Bougie buried his wife & children, burned down his house, & set out for vengeance. Anyone who roamed the roads was his prey. He supposedly never killed a woman or a child (but if they went missing probably no-one would notice anyway...), but if you were a drifter your life was his to take. As the story started to spread, he became known as L'homme Bougie (Bougie man). This story will be handed down generation to generation. His story would even be told in the intrest of dicipline, parents will tell thier children if they misbehave L'homme Bougie will come...to get them...

-Ref. Sheet [link]

This Jean-Charles Bougie is based after the real Jean-Charles Bougie. Backstory is based after true events.

Hey, more constructive criticism. Isn't this FUN!?!?

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think that this character is still a work in progress. The face I think you have to where you want it, and is frankly the most important part of this kind of character.

But the rest of the costume I think needs some revision, or at least some tweaking. My biggest problems are that the cloak/trenchcoat isn't selling me, and that the character doesn't feel like he has HISTORY. He feels too modern, and doesn't seem to have any tangible reflections of his past.

Firstly, the coat. I totally understand the ratty coat idea, but I think you're drawing it wrong. The way you're drawing it has the edges of the coat feathered. But the edges are feathered on ALL PARTS of the coat. Instead of making the coat look ragged and torn, it looks more like he's wearing a lush and furry coat that's seen better days. A smoother line to contour the coat, and actual holes in his coat. Frey the edges of the coat, and around the holes, and maybe in a few other spots. A more streamlined look will look better, and be faster to draw I think. Having the coat lined in that dark burgundy color is a good design choice though, keep that.

Next, his clothes look too MODERN, like he just walked into the nearest Hot Topic and picked some rad merchandise off the shelves. The boots are big and spiky which, in my mind, rarely equates scary. I think the same design for the boot, just without the metal, would suit him better. Make them a darker color too.

His pants and shirt look too modern too, their proportions, and how they're cut. I think that having the pants come up a little higher on his waist, and tucked into tall boots would suit him a little better. The shirt... I think he needs something else, another layer. A vest, a undershirt, or something stranger, like belts binding his chest. I picture his design to be close to Tim Burton's Headless Horseman (or any incarnation really), or The Crow.

I also think the clothing of a character is a good way to reflect the personality and history they have. Something that would show his French origin, or his worldly travels, or his seeming supernatural powers. Weather you would reflect this in his fashion (ala more period clothing) or maybe have something he carries (something he collects/trinkets from victims) would of course be up to you.

A good design, but art is never finished, and is always changing. Come up with a few alternate costumes for him just for fun, ones that would never be used, just to try things out. Make a collage of the Boogeyman through the ages- what would he have looked like right after the murders? Victorian London? Revolutionary War? World War I? In a hundred years? Trust me, just let your imagination wander, and you'll come up with designs you wouldn't ever normally think of.

Also, when looking at your comments, refrences and favorites lists, I don't see many of my favorite horror/psychological thriller works of fiction on your lists, so I'll share with you some of my favorites:

Silent Hill - If you're a fan of horror you MUST play this series. Silent Hill 2 especially, but SH3 and SH: Homecoming are also worthy entries. SH 1 is very good too, but pretty dated at this point. The movie doesn't have the best plot, but captures the visuals of the series very well

John Carpenter's: The Thing - This, in my opinion is the greatest horror movie ever made. It relies on the tension between the characters and the situations to create an intense, untrusting, and oppressive environment, rather then relying on cheap deaths and jump scares. A incredible work, and one of my all-time favorites.

Jacob's Ladder - A real mindbender this one. If you're a fan of unreliable narrators and just downright weird shit, don't miss this. Very thought provoking, with some powerful imagery.

American McGee's ALICE - A totally crazy game. A wonderfully dark and twisted version of Alice in Wonderland that holds up quite well. Cheshire Cat is awesome.

I must say... epic novel comments lol... but entirely relevent... I completely agree with you, all my characters are all works in progress I shall take your suggestions into account indeffinatly.

& to name a few horror fav's of mine:

-JC's The Thing

-JC's The Re-Animater
Like "The Thing", both are delightfully macabre. But This is more about the fear of the unknown...

-Bram stoker's Dracula

-Mary Shelly's Frankenstien

-Boogeyman
I personally love this film's darkness

-The Evil Dead 1,2, & Army of Darkness
A Classic film having a unique story line & Groteque creatures

-The Mist
Another like "The Thing" in the aspect that the charaters are fightning among each other to survive against an unknown

-Nightmare on Elm Street
A classic with a unique Villain, I even know people Freddy still scares even now...

-The Hannibal Lector Films
the man is a genious... what can i say

-Dead Silent
I found this film a bit spooky & it even had a pretty good twist

-The Darkness
this game & comic was indeed very dark & even had a feeling of hopelessness about it...

-Silent Hill 2
I found this one to stand out from the rest of the series

-Resident Evil 1-5
I'm a big Fan of the Series

-Dead Space
This game's clusterphobic environments, dark atmosphere, grotesque creatures, strange plot line, & psychological fear rivel that of RE & SH

8D Sweet! The boogeyman, hmm? He's based of off actual events, correct?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Killjoy1230 In reply to Dragon-Knight333 [2008-08-31 18:34:39 +0000 UTC]

yes... Jean-Charles Bougie was an actual 15th century murderer that was never caught,(kinda like a Jack the Ripper from the 1400's) though he never looked like this... obviously XD... all of the back-story is true... & thus the legend of the boogeyman was born... (did a lot of research into it for fun cause the boogeyman is my favorite fairy tale villain for reasons unknown)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragon-Knight333 In reply to Killjoy1230 [2008-08-31 19:09:51 +0000 UTC]

Haha, but he's kind of the opposite from Jack in the case that Jack killed only women/prostitutes, ne? ^^
The boogeyman is a pretty amazing wive's tale villain. I say wive's tale, because he's not really in fairy tales, he's more of a generation by generation told story ^^
