Description

Werewolves are probably one of my favourite mythical creatures out there. I especially love the Irish version because of a unique aspect to their transformation that I haven't seen in other European werewolves. Instead of the person physically transforming into a werewolf, Irish werewolves transform by having the soul separate from the physical body and it is the soul that takes on the shape of a werewolf. It has the interesting consequence that the physical human body is left behind, lying there as if either dead or asleep. The physical body cannot be moved because otherwise the soul is unable to return.

In Irish folklore it isn't really seen as a curse to be able to turn into a werewolf. There is no "bite" that passes the curse on. It's seems far more genetic, like you have this ability because you're descended from a werewolf. Werewolf Ireland is talking to person offscreen named Osraige/Ossory, an Irish medieval kingdom that seems to have been the mythical motherland to all Irish werewolves. It is at least from this kingdom that a man, named Laignech Fáelad, is claimed to be the very first werewolf in Irish history. He founded a clan and all his descendants inherited his ability to turn into a werewolf.
