Description
Two finches of some sort (I should have read the sign!) flying free throughout the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver. Taken during a trip there earlier this year while it poured rain outside.I'm not much of a wildlife photographer but the moment caught my interest and even though I wish I had caught them facing me, this composition is growing on me too.

They're zebra finches! I love zebra finches - I used to have them as pets.

To be honest, I don't like the framing of some of your latest photos, the photos are great, as usual, but the framing takes away from them, it's almost like a distraction, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts on the border... any suggestions on an easy, yet classic looking frame? I'm not much of a superstar in PS but any suggestions would be great!

I would just go for a simple black or white border for this photo, or any other photos for that matter, probably a black border for this photo in particular.

Oh, Sorry. There used to be a nature show on called Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. It was narated by Marlin Perkins and his assistance Jim was the one who did the dirty work like wrestling snakes and stuff like that.

I've eaten those. They're delicious.
Just kidding.
I'm not a big fan of photographing wildlife (because my camera sucks),
but I love to see colorful birds like this. Too cool!

Beautiful shot. A face-on shot might have been nice, but I like the angle this has. They seem to be braced for the weather. A little sharper focus would have been nice, but I know how it is. Sometimes you have to work with what you have. But I really like how the bg turned out. The dark and light patches seem to make them both stand out and blend in at the same time. Intriguing and wonderful!

Hey - is this your first bordered photo? I likes it! I think you did the best you possibly could with the conditions being what they were (handheld, darkness, etc.) I do wish they were looking at you, but I don't think even partially domesticated birds get that friendly. (At least they weren't as noisy as the parrots!) What I really like about this photo (besides the border) is the dark greyblue hue. Usually I'm not so much a fan of the blue, but here it matches their plumage (beautiful plumage!) while contrasting nicely with the orange. I also like the uniqueness of the fauna. It looks somewhat hostile and yet the birds appear very comfortable there.
We'll have to go back on a brighter day. And I'm bringing an umbrella!

*grin* I like going there with you... you know, how the mosquitos are attracted to me... the parrots to you! hahahha
Thanks for the comment! I like the border as well... I think I might be able to do these ones consistently as well. Yippee!
I never thought about the relationship between the birds and the environment before, thanks for pointing it out. Makes for some interesting tension.

Very nice picture.. We don't have these birds flying around in the wild I've only seen them in petstores. In Dutch we call them 'Zebravink' which means zebrafinch (was that on the sign you didn't read
) This are two males btw...

It's amazing capture... They seem to be in a watchfull, serene mood rather than busy body which is always on the move and talkative one...
It reminds me the lines :
Two birds on tiny branches
Like a new-born from the ashes,
with a lashing desire
any moment to fly free...
Cheers..!

I like the shot, and the framing, I also like the frame
I looks in the barckground that there was a bit of air movement, which is a bit distracting, but not something I have a problem with
Colours are fantastic. I have to say, I agree with that animals don't have to face the camera. You have enough of their face to be efective, as opposed to the back of their head
Great shot

I dont have a really good day, but this shot really caress me...
How did you came so close (with 50mm lens)??
Only loss that the DOF is so small..

I know, I wish I could have had more DOF, but there was no way these guys would let me get closer with a tripod, so I had to go handheld. This was taken in a closed in conservatory, so the birds are in contact with humans quite a lot. I was able to get about 2 feet away from them to get the shot before they flew away.
Thanks for the comment!

Very nice
I like the border and the composition. You have done well with the background too, it's nicely blurred to make the birds stand out more.
It seems, though, that the birds (or at least the on in front) is a little out of focus.
Well done

Very interesting composition with the birds facing away from the camera! Who's to say that animals always have to be photographed from the front with catchlights in their eyes?
I, too, don't "shoot" many animals, but I'm getting into it since that one squirrel "posed" for me the other day. I got my big lens out and...I had to change back to a 50mm just like you since it was far from shy and came too close to focus with the monster-tele.
Vivid colors and wonderful out-of-focus background here...again, an outstanding photo!
