I never fully understood why so many people hate Chris Thorndyke, I think he's a genuinely fun character with a great family too. Maybe it's just me but, you don't have to be "useful" to be a good character.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I always make it a point to give credit to the artist whenever I color something because I know artists work hard and deserve to be recognized. Now this is something I wasn't expecting to find when I searched "TG Sonic The Hedgehog". Was looking for genderbent pictures of our blue blurr. Hopefully this Chris (maybe now she's Kris?) will be more useful than he is in Sonic X. (Believe it or not, Sonic X is an anime. One that got badly nerfed by 4Kids. Chris is still useless in both versions though. But in the Japanese version, there is a scene where Shadow actually ATTACKS Chris, and slams him against a wall! Yay for anti hero harming useless main character! XD!)

Yup, indeed. I agree with you, Chris is tortured in fan art like Ash is! At least Ash is not useless, though he sucks in his skills as a Pokemon Trainer (WHO freaking loses at the first Gym of EVERY Pokemon game, and ALWAYS loses at the end of the Pokemon league of EVERY region, and doesn't bother retrying?), and has the habit of stealing the role of EVERY male character of each Pokemon game when it's brought into the anime, excluding Pokemon Ranger games. We still get to see male heroes from the Pokemon Ranger games, like Kellyn! Also, reason Brock called Kellyn's Styler the Battonage Styler, because that's it's Japanese name. Also, Brock made yet ANOTHER mistake! It's not the best Rangers who get the Battonage Styler! Kellyn was the FIRST to get it, as an upgrade to the Top Styler to bypass Darkrai's Field Power to "capture" Pokemon during the Pokemon being affected by it, in Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia! (You are talking to somebody who's beaten the game 100%, excluding Ranger Net missions. Still want to play the mission where you get Darkrai to transfer to your Gen 4 Pokemon games...) Sorry for the rant...I didn't mean to...

I'd imagine that if Chris did chase after Sonic then she'd be in a fierce battle with Amy. That would not bode well for her because she has no real weapons or skills. Amy on ther other hand has a mallet. ^^

I always hated Chris, he was so useless. I always hate when anime does that, shove a useless protagonist in to appeal to the target demographic. Anime movies are even worse in this regaurd

I seem to recall someone telling me once that Sega had originally designed Tails as a female that had similar capabilities to Sonic, but at thew last minute they redesigned Tails as a younger male that was a bit on the submissive side of things. It might be a similar thing with Chris, although, I think with him it was probably showing that an average boy from our world could become part of Sonics world thus attracting boys by thinking they could be like Chris as well. Honestly though, whatever the reason Sega has made some pretty bad mistakes. Amy was way to obsessed with Sonic that she was mostly anoiying to both girls and boys. Tails acts too much like a young niave girl, than a male character that could hang with the likes of Sonic. Chris had no real reason for being in Sonics world; he had no powers, didn't help Sonic, and was universally hated by everyone.

It's cool, you probably get so many comments all the time that you don't have time to check them all. I agree that Chris s universally hated, I just absolutely despise when companies we'll shove in a new and useless character to appeal to a young demographic. I used to watch this anime called Knights Of The Zodiac, and halfway through a major story arc three useless teenagers showed up with mechanical armor. These characters had never been seen before, and they mysteriously disappeared for no reason at the beginning of the next arc. Nobody really liked them, as they had no real purpose in existing, just like Chris.

It's funny you should mention completely useless characters being introduced for no reason and suddenly disappearing without an explanation. I've been doing some research on something that I'll be using to replace dialogue that Robin say's to Ron Stoppable. Instead of offering him to become a member of S.H.E.I.L.D. I am going to have Robin be a little nasty and say:
"I could make you a junior member of The Superfriends like Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog."
"Superfriends" was not that great animation, at least not compared to "Justice League." The thing about the show was really bad was Wendy and Marvin were just plain teenagers that were somehow part of the heroes inner circle. That only lasted for one season, the next season they were replaced without any explanation by Zan, Jayna, and their pet blue monkey. Not sure how long they lasted but at least Jayna could turn into any animal, and Zan...umm...the form of water.
Anyhow, my thought was Robin resented being rescued by what he considers Kim's sidekick. I think he'd be pretty sensitive about that since he was Batman's side kick before being part of "Teen Titans."

So Chris starts out as a boy, then he crosses over to Sonic's world. Once there he turns into a female hedgehog? Well, that would give the overall story something; trying to cope with the fact that you changed gender and species that would be difficult to deal with.

If you were going to bring Chris back, then do something interesting with him. This would certainly qualify. It's a better idea than what we got, and that's just sad. The show was moving in a more sophisticated direction show deep thoughts wouldn't be unwelcome. Besides, his presence in the second season was almost unnecessary. You sometimes forget that he's even there.

Well, when you are talking about children's programming many things get taken off the table. Having a major plot change in a character where a boy becomes a girl is something that makes parent groups a bit upset. Ranma ½ was shown on Japanese television without anyone there raising an objection. You will never see Ranma on American television simply because of the gender bender thing, that and there was some nudity. Good writing also takes a back seat in general. For example, "Young Justice" was prematurely cancelled because CN wanted to aim it's programming at small children and it was deemed too sophisticated to be salvaged. Teen Titans did survive to only become worth watching for five year olds.
I'd say executives and censors would sooner cancel the show rather than have Chris become a girl as a regular character. You'd probably see something like a temporary mind swap with him and say Amy. Both characters would spend the entire time complaining about being in the wrong body while the situation resolves itself before the end of the episode.

Yes but when you look at the success of Doctor Who, you roll your eyes. Doctor Who started as a pure kids show, but also attracted an adult following. Around Jon Pertwee's run as the Doctor, it was decided to change from a kids's show, to a show the whole family could enjoy. This decision led to some of the best years of Doctor Who's history and is a large part of it's revival. Every child that was going to watch the show, already was. The decision then was to make as many quality episodes as was possible. That is how good shows last, not by targeting a specific demographic, but by having mass appeal.

Well generally speaking the main limitation the BBC has put on the series over the years has been the budget. When they revamped the show in 2005 they gave Russell T. Davies a fair amount of creative control. Even budgetary constraints go out the window when you're making the 50th anniversary special. I am really looking forward to that.
I think when you are dealing with children's programming in the U.S. it becomes an automatic assumption that if it is a cartoon it must be aimed only at small children. There are exceptions like "The Simpsons," but executives seem to think it is not worth their time in making the product entertaining for the whole family. At least with "Doctor Who" it was understood that it could be enjoyed by the whole family and it has been from generation to generation. Go further with this point, the BBC let "Doctor Who" do it's thing, then spun off "Torchwood" which was a bit darker and could explore even more sophisticated storylines. Not to completely forget about younger viewers "The Sarah Jane Adventures" was created. Even though that was specifically aimed at younger viewers it never really talked down to children. Elisabeth Sladen had a credibility to her that crossed the bridge between children and adults alike. It is possible for children to accept more than just mindless nonsense that is so often served to them.

I originally wanted the title to be "Christina the Hedgehog", but I was not able to get permission from both the artist and the one who commissioned it. I really wanted to color this so I didn't push it because it really is all about the art in the end that counts. Chris makes for a pretty lovely hedgehog, and I think she's probably enough of a tomboy for Sonic to accept having her hang around, at least more so than Amy.
