Daikhotan In reply to Kimptone [2008-01-23 12:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Ex racers.. are they a handful?

I remember when I went to first go buy a horse I went to go see a Thoroughbred.. he was lovely but we later found out he was an ex racer and we gave him a trial ride.. what a nightmare. I couldn't keep his head down and he proceeded to pull me. But of course.. this is stereotyping. What are yours like?

I don't ride like a tool xD
Sorry, I tend to use that word a lot for things I don't like XD

I broke the younger one into being rideable, but the elder one was easier.

I prefer my horses to have their heads up. It's more natural and the horse is more comfortable and relaxed. Or atleast, most horses are with their heads up, so I find.
I also use loose reigns, so even if they wanted to, they couldn't 'ull'.

I ride the elder one bareback unless i'm jumping him c: The young one's a shit and I hate him~

Daikhotan In reply to Kimptone [2008-01-24 09:23:52 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, it's hard to describe but when they, I think it's rattle snake their heads. And just want to run for it.. does that make sense?

My sister is the more.. un - natural way of riding a horse. They have to be collected.. so I've always been told to have my horse collected.

But Legend, as you can tell in the picture, always keeps his head like that in motion. I only bought him a couple of months ago but he used to breed so he had to be in top condition so as a young horse they tapped plastic bags on his feet and put a.. dern.. what are they called? It's for being in the stable at night and it keeps their head collected. My sister was friend's with his old owner so we got a top horse with loowww money. It was great. I'm so proud of him.

My sisters horse Bailey, he's the black cob has the tendency of keeping his head straight because he has such a soft mouth and he doesn't like the pulling. He isn't able to ride but he's learning to drive. He's only 3.

There was this other ex racer up at my old yard.. he was completely mental, I think he'd been abused because you tried to go near him and he just started going nuts in the field. Always.. he never tired. Way to much energy. But at this new yard there is a Thoroughbred cros called Amelie and she is ever so gentle and doscile.. it's unbeleivable.

I still yet to conquer jumping on Legend. We've tried once but when we landed I fell off since I hadn't jumped in two years and I forgot to hold myself at the last minute.. ahaha.

It makes sense, and really it just means they were either trained badly or the rider is doing something wrong. I mean, don't take it offensivley, i'm just trying to help
If your horse raises it's head really high (arabians do it a lot), then collect them just enough for them to bring it down a little. If your horse goes to take off on you without being told to, collect your reigns super tight, sit back in the saddle and make sure your legs arn't gripping it (which you should always do, anyway) , and stop it completely. Count to 20 (or however long it needs), and walk until it's calm, then do whatever c:
Dressage people prefer to have collected horses. It's usually because they are scared so they hold onto their horses as tight as possible (which gives the horse a hard mouth). Mind you, some do it because it's 'fancy'.

Aww you lub your horsie < 33 Wtf? Why tie bags to your horses feet? x___x Idck. Some trainers confuse me.

A lot of racehorse trainers use...not so friendly methods, which is probably why. Also keeping in mind racers have a tendancy to be down right dickheads when it comes to who's boss unless boss has a firm hand xD
I was firm enough and now I can lie on Jimmy bareback with no ropes or halters and command him with both voice and leg movement commands xD While using no mean treatment at all in training <3

Daikhotan In reply to Kimptone [2008-01-24 15:51:25 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I am a bad rider. Not in the sense of abusing my horse but because I've been poorly trained. I used to go to a riding school that just told you to kick thme with your legs and pull to stop and pull to turn.

But I have a professional private trainer that has taught me to squeeze with my legs, instead of kick.. she used ot call me bat woman. xP To pull gently to turn not yank and to stop I should just tighten my index finger to my palm and add a bit of pressure with quick release. And I was to taugh to keep my hands low, elbows bent, heels down, back straight eyes forward. And to collect she said to gently squeeze with my index finger to my palm.. or as she said it play with the bit. Is this all right? But I understand what you mean by trying to to offend me, it doesn't. I personally know I'm a bad rider and I'm trying to learn.

I know, plastic bags :s.. he's not at all frightened of plastic bags though and it's good. people fly tip down our lanes os it's a pain hacking with Legend but most horses freak with placy bags but he just carries on. That's a plus.

I went to a show a couple of months ago with Bailey just to get him used to the whole idea of showing. And there was this woman there with a perfectly behaved Thoroughbred. This horse was amazing. She entered all the novice classes though which i thought was a bit of a cheek because she got 1st place in ever class and other people who are novices didn't get that chance. So yeah, as she rode near Bailey (not showing anymore)it spooked him, he pulled away from my sister and the lady tsked at us and said keep that horse under control. And my sister got a bit angry. Who wouldn't? Later on when we were leading him to his box and her box was next to ours, there she was putting ruygs and boots on him and asked me to hold him so I did and we were chatting. I asked if she clipped him because he had patterns on his rump and I wanted to know how they did it and she said, "Yes, you really should clip your horse.. he looks like a carthorse." I felt very offended.. my sister heard and she had a go at this woman and said get your face out of your arse and learn some respect.

Bailey is a cob.. weren't they bred as carthorses back in the day?

So she was a dickhead. But Bailey is my sister's horse even though I love him to pieces aswell. He's just 3 and of course he'll spook when he's not concentrating. We found it fustrating when she gave the impression Bailey was badly behaved.

I've been riding for 3 years so I can hardly train a horse myself but did you use Natural horsemanship with Jimmy?

Kimptone In reply to Daikhotan [2008-01-25 03:24:43 +0000 UTC]

You have a bloody good trainer, there

Horse people are either up themselves or roudy. Then there's the occassional in between people. But seriously, I swear to god there's only 3 categories of horse people xDD -is a roudy one, myself-
What a bitch :/ She should've asked if you needed help or given tips or /something/ if she's, although I hate to say it, that good in the ring. People like that really ruin it, eh?
Poor Bailey D: -hug him- Cob...I don't know much about cart horsies, but I think they were? Could be wrong~

I got 2 or 3 lessons when I was 7 from my Mum and pretty much learn't how to rise in a trot and that was it. Then the next time I rode after that was at ~Tara-Jade 's farm on her pony and I learnt how to do everything else over a day and a half? Then I met Jimmy and started training him. Honestly? Experience is a huge thing in training horses, but some people just have it in them to do it. My mum did, my sister did, and I do. It's second nature to me to train animals, it was just riding them I needed experience with xD
Yes, I used natural horsemanship c:
I taught myself how to actually ride on Jimmy, so we have a close bond < 3 No one ever watched me training or riding, though, which was a bit sad :/
