Description Full View - though large, it's worth it. Feel free to use reference, link back if used, however

Drawn to a general three-sheep working border collie line art.

1. Standard Black and White
2. Standard Chocolate and White (Considered as Red out of Australia)
3. Standard Red and White (The colour varies from this to chocolate in general)
4. Black (and white?) (Can come without ANY white. I just added some for the sake of it)
5. Blue and White
6. Blue Merle (I didn't add red merle as it isn't Australian standard, but you can have them)
7. Sable
8. Tri-Coloured
9. Wheaton
10. Flecked
11. White (NOT albino)
12. Mismarked (black and white type)

Group A consists of Australian Show acceptable colours (although I'm not certain on the sable), whereas Group B consists of dilutions, mismarks, and un-recognized colours. I didn't add red merle but it's just a blue merle...in red. I've never seen one, and they're not accepted in the Australian show ring (blue merle was only accepted in the late 1990's, red never was).

I wrote this as a basic help for people who wanted to see pretty colours of border collies. Stop being technical and having bitches about it being not perfect in technicalities. Grow up, it's a chart to display that there's more than just black and white.

If I get anymore complaints I'm taking it down.

The "lethal white" genes in border collies is not actually lethal. It's a different genetic phenomenon in dogs than in horses. (:

Curious as to the Lilac border collies and the Chocolate Merle? Are they recognised in Australia? Recently came across a lilac tri in a puppy obedience class. (NSW)

I have 9. Sable and he's a purebred Australian Border Collie. I was also told that it's not that rare nowadays, (as his mother was this colour and his father also had a habit of also throwing this colour, there were three of his colouring in the litter.)

I have been told by several breeders that the sable are never used as show dogs in Australia, in line with the Scottish rule of thumb. (Only trusting black and white collies to herd sheep.)

I've also been told that it is regarded as a throw-back gene, because the original shepherds dog type Border's once came in all sable or all black with a couple of white points.

(I do have a photo of him in my gallery on here.)

I'm in working border collies in the US and you see a far wider range of colors, Black and whites and red/liver and whites are common. I have one red sable in my working string, and have had another dark red sable and a black sable as well. You see the occational but rare brindle over here (I have a black tri who's tri points are brindled, who's parents actually came of Australia)

That said I've never (and never will) dealt with show lines so I can't honestly tell you what's accepted in the show ring. I shudder every time I see the short stocky heavy coated dogs paraded around a show ring.

As for your comment on mixes, I couldn't resist adding that I also don't mind Lurchers, and Alaskan huskies. They are doing some experimental breedings between Belgian Malinois and German shepherds that have produced some nice police service dogs.

And what I meant to say from the beginning and got distracted was, a very nice chart and nice to see something other than just the reds and blacks featured.

Oh wow, I've only seen the chocolate (or dark red) sables, I'd love to see the other types if you have photos. I can't even imagine a black sable haha. Also didn't know brindle was possible - again, photos?

Thank you, but it seems it needs updating once again

I'll have to dig up a picture of my Baby doll but it's a similar color as a black sable in a german shepherd, she looked almost black until she moved then you could see the tan undercoat.

As for brindle there's a good picture of one here on Deviantart actually

Thanks(I've already found a pic of merle with full-brown eyes). I was just worried because I get used to characters with blue eyes, and I made my new(merle BC) with brown xD

Haha naww, except for albino, all colours can have brown
Although reds have a lighter yellow brown (but it's still brown, lol).
It's good to see someone caring about the reality of characters

In Sweden only the black and white are accepted and then the dog can't have too much black or too much white.. Though I have two purebred Tricolour BC's, father and daughter, my extra dad breeds tricolour BC's he chooses them after mentalhealth and body.
Both SΓ‘jtte (8y) and Sirkka (10w) are bred like that end they got some nerves, best dogs ever. Calm, soft, easy to handle at all times. I could go on forever

Well to the point: Thank you for posting this chart, makes me remember that in other countries they allow more than just black and white!

On the Black coloration: It can come without Black? Then why is called Black? Or is it a typo?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimptone In reply to SpyingDemon [2010-10-06 22:38:47 +0000 UTC]

It's black because it is predominantly black
I am yet to see a black BC with no white. The closest I've seen is black with a white spot on the chest.
Remember that not all of these are 'official' names, but the colloquial names people give them For example, in Australia officially there is no such thing as a red merle, but there is in England.

so how do you breed to get a white collie then?? is there a way to do it without risking the merle cross? (i'm no breeder but i like border collies enough to ask)

p.s. i used to have a border collie/lab/somethin' else mix when i was little--her name was Boots and she was like a nanny/second mother i miss her sometimes, but always remember how gentle she was

Useless crosses such as a border X lab I think is a waste of time. Something like a border X kelpie for a working dog is useful~
But hey, that's just my view, yours could be different

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akerin In reply to Kimptone [2010-05-06 18:57:45 +0000 UTC]

Accidents happen. Most mixes exist because people weren't paying attention to their dogs. But any dog can work. There's no such thing as a useless dog, regardless of breed. You'd be surprised how many working Border/Lab crosses there are out there. Not just for service dog work, drug-detection, personal protection, but yes, even in herding.

My dog is a Westie/Sibe/Tervuren mix according to the DNA test and she has a super high prey drive as well as enough herding instinct to know not to kill what she's going after. She's incredibly smart, and even though there's supposedly not a lick of Border Collie in there, she could be just as useful as one. I would love to get her involved with local parks to help chase geese off the fields. She's wonderful at it. But aside from that she's already a working dog. She's my ESA (emotional support animal) and alerts me to drastic mood changes and incoming panic attacks.

I have a soft spot for rescues. You should hear what Ava's mom (who was horribly abused before she came to her foster, then was adopted out to a forever home) is doing now. Again I say, there's no such thing as a useless dog unless you're incredibly shallow.

Just stumbled across this while browsing BC's, nice chart, don't think i've seen any white/white flecked borders in person!

But i do know a couple of Red Merles, they certainly do show this genotype...

In Australia they certainly don't, so I've never seen one After all, blue merles were only accepted not that long ago as well (I'm talking bit over 10 years)~

When we lived in England we were going to bring over a red merle apparently (I was just informed haha), but didn't as we were showing and they weren't a recognized colour over here c:

Although I must say with the new breed standards they would look like Aussie Shepherds with tails in Australia, which is a shame :c Should of stuck to the old standards, they actually made sense instead of these ridiculous short and stocky things

Double dose of a particular gene carries the ability to create the issues. The same thing happens with Australian Shepherds.

Kimptone In reply to pawbla [2009-08-08 08:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Not hugely sure, actually. Just something I've heard from a couple of show/colour breeders. Could be because it is a dilution? Then again, you'd think that Blue would be bad then. Hmm. I dunno xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pawbla In reply to Kimptone [2009-08-09 21:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. In most cases, dilutions don't seem to involve risks. I actually can't recall any situation. Except albinism, of course xD.
Well, I don't know xD. Awesome chart, by the way :3.
