Chapter 10 - An Illuminant Soul
“Hey! Are you alright?” a mysterious voice spoke. Envy slowly sat up, regaining her composure. When she heard the voice again, she became startled.
“Who’s there!?” she said back.
“Do not be alarmed. I am not a foe.” the mysterious voice responded back. Envy couldn’t see. It was pitch black.
“Hello?” Envy called out. When she pulled out a torch and lit it, she could see that she was inside of a cave. She then saw who was calling her and gasped as she backed up a little in fear. In the light, there was a skeleton standing a few meters away from her. The skeleton was wearing a hat and wearing a very old outfit while holding a giant bag of items. In fact, he looked like some kind of merchant.
"Wait! Wait!" the skeleton merchant cried. "I'm not here to hurt you."
"Oh. Sorry, you scared the crap out of me!" Envy sighed in relief.
"Eh. It's alright." the skeleton merchant said. "You were lying there, unconscious. I was just checking to see if you were ok."
"Oh…Well, thanks for helping me."
"You are very welcome." the skeleton merchant said. Envy then pulled out her magic mirror. Before she could use it however, an anthropomorphic salamander appeared out of nowhere and spat a venomous saliva at the mirror, shattering it. Envy turned and saw the salamander in a hole in the cave wall. As it spat another spitball, Envy then dodged it and swung her ball of hurt at the salamander. There was a loud crack as the spiky ball hit its face. The salamander squealed as it was plunged back into the darkness. Envy then looked at her magic mirror on the ground, which was shattered.
"No! My magic mirror." she cried. Frantically, she gathered the shattered remains of the glass and put them all back together. When she tried to use the magic mirror, nothing happened. Envy tried to use it again, but blue sparks buzzed and bled out of it. The magic mirror wouldn’t work. “Dammit! Now how am I going to get out of here?" Envy said in anger.
"I'm terribly sorry, ma’am. " the skeleton merchant said. "Oh do forgive me. I've forgotten to introduce myself. I'm Jack, Jack Sellington."
"I'm Envy. It's nice to meet you, Jack." Envy said. "Do you know how to get back to the surface?"
"Hmmm. Unfortunately no." Jack said. "I usually just stay down here, in the caverns."
"Oh…" Envy said a little depressed.
“But it’s not so bad down here, really.” Jack said. “The caverns are known to be home to all sorts of creatures. Although, it is pretty rare to come across nice folk like me.”
“Are you a merchant?” Envy asked as she noticed the bag.
“Why yes I am, miss.” Jack answered.
“Oh. What do you have?” Envy asked.
“I don’t have anything trippy on me at the moment, but I do have these glow sticks.” Jack said as he pulled out three green glow sticks. “These are also a good alternative light source for when you’re exploring underwater. Now usually, I would sell these for at least 10 copper. But since you look pretty lost, I’m giving you some for free.”
“Gee, thanks!” Envy said.
“How many would you like?" Jack asked.
"About a hundred may be good." Envy answered. Jack then took out 100 glow sticks from his bag and handed them to Envy. "Well thanks again for helping me, Jack."
"You’re heading out?" Jack asked.
"Yup. I'm going to see if I can find a way out of here." Envy said.
"Wait! Before you go, there’s something I should tell you." Jack cried.
"And that is?" Envy asked.
"Rumor has it that around this area, a pink beast lurks in the darkness." Jack said.
"A beast?" Envy said in question.
"Yes. They also have an incredible sense of hearing, so be careful. I don’t know if this creature is dangerous or not." Jack warned.
“Have you seen this beast before?” Envy asked.
“Yes, a few times.” Jack answered.
“Do you know what they look like?” Envy asked.
“No. Usually, I could only see his glowing eyes, along with a pair of horns and strange antennas.” Jack said. “Other parts of his body could be seen too, however. From the looks of it, the beast appears to be some sort of dragon-like creature. I don’t really know. It’s all a blur.”
"Ok, I'll keep aware of that. Bye." Envy said as she wandered off into the darkness.
“Travel safe.” Jack said. After exploring for a while, Envy spent hours searching for another magic mirror. Despite her efforts, she could find nothing but useless loot. She tried searching for a route back to the surface, but everywhere she went led her in circles. Deeper into the cave however, Envy stumbled upon something incredible. A forest of glowing mushrooms. She was puzzled by the sight of the tall, glowing fungi that lurked. The grass that grew in the mud also gave off a blue glow.
“What kind of cave is this?” she said. Over a hill in the distance, Envy could see an old mushroom house that looked very large and abandoned. As she stared at the house, she then noticed something moving around at the bottom of the hill. She pulled out her binoculars, and what she saw was a person tied up by a rope. "Is that man?" she said with concern. Envy then flew down to help the tied up man. "Hey, are you alright?" She asked when she landed. When Envy got up close to the man and took off her helmet, she can now see that the man was actually a goblin. When the bound goblin noticed Envy, he muffled over the cloth tied into his mouth, begging to be freed. "Don’t worry, I’ll help you." Envy said. She then untied him and removed the cloth from his mouth. The goblin then gasped for air as he was freed. He then stood up
"Thank you for saving me!" the goblin said, gratefully
"You’re welcome." Envy said. Just then, she could hear the sounds of someone crying in the mushroom forest behind her.
"Do you hear something?" the goblin asked.
"Yeah, I do." Envy replied.
"I'm Sarx, by the way." the goblin said as he held out his hand.
"....Envy." She responded as she shook his hand. The two of them then proceeded into the forest. What they then found was a girl sitting all alone in the grass, crying. The girl had pale white skin, light blue hair, and was completely naked.
"A girl?" Sarx said in confusion.
"I know, right?" Envy said. "I think she might be lost." Envy then slowly approached the girl. "Hey, little one. Are you alright?" She said. The girl did not react. Envy then looked at Sarx and then back at the girl. "Hey, can you hear me?" Envy asked as she got even closer to the girl. Something felt very off about this to Sarx. It was until then he realized what Envy was talking to.
"Envy, get away from that!" He cried, but it was too late. When Envy touched the girl's shoulder, the girl suddenly turned around with green skin and blood all over her mouth of razor sharp teeth. The girl then screeched at Envy and pounced on her like a wild animal. Both of them tumbled down a hill. "Crap! Hold on, I’m coming!" Sarx shouted. Suddenly, the tree next to him was hit by a bone.
"Get the goblin!" A voice shouted. A gang of mushroom skeletons then appeared from behind the mushroom trees and ran towards Sarx. Sarx screamed and ran away as the skeletons chased him. As Envy and the girls reached the bottom of the hill, the girl started aggressively attacking her. Envy tried all her might to get the girl off of her, but she was just too strong. Suddenly, something swooped down and grabbed the girl. To the right, a mysterious pink figure held the girl up against a mushroom tree. The figure then pulled out a strange looking sword and stabbed the girl in the chest with a loud crack. The girl lay lifeless as blood dripped from her mouth. Envy then watched the figure turn to her before passing out.
As Simon watched Envy fall asleep, he quickly rushed over to help her.
“Hey, are you alright?” he asked. When he saw her face, his eyes went wide. “(Her again!)” he said as he recognized her. As he continued to stare at her face, his heart started to thump. The darkrunes on her horns glowed a beautiful purple as they danced along. There was something about Envy that fascinated Simon. Later, Simon took her into his home, which was the same abandoned house at the top of the hill. There, he healed Envy’s injuries and let her rest in one of the bedrooms on the second story. As he walked down to the living room and sat down in a nearby chair, he rubbed his face with his hands.
“Yo, Simon. Who was that you were carrying?” Wart the giant worm asked as he jumped up onto a table next to Simon. Simon sighed.
“Remember that dragon I told you I found weeks ago?” he asked.
“I think so.” Wart answered.
“I found her at the bottom of the hill,” Simon said, “She was being attacked by a nymph.”
“A nymph!?” Wart cried.
“Yes, and it was a really aggressive one.” Simon said. “I then came in and stabbed it. And yeah.” He then gave a depressed sigh.
“Why are you upset, bud?” Wart asked. “You should be proud of yourself. You just saved a girl from danger.”
“I know, Wart,” Simon said, “But there’s just something special about her. I don’t know what it really is.”
“Why don’t you just try to talk to her?” Wart asked.
“What?! I can’t just talk to her!” Simon cried. “What if she’s afraid of me?”
“Simon, I have been your best bud for the past several years. I’m not afraid of you.”
“Yeah, I know that, but still.” Simon said. Just then, the antennas on the sides of his head wobbled and made a clicking sound as he detected the vibration of footsteps. He then turned around and saw Envy spying on him from the top of the stairwell. Simon gasped and ran to hide.
“What? What is it?” Wart said in a concerned voice. A loud clatter echoed from the room Simon ran into.
“Hello.” Envy said in a friendly voice. She walked down the stairs and approached the worm.
“Oh, hi!” Wart said, greetfully.
“What’s your name?” Envy asked.
“The name’s Wart.” Wart answered. “And you are?”
“I’m Envy.” Envy said. “That guy you were talking to. Why did he run away when he saw me?”
“Oh, my friend?” Wart said. “Yeah, sorry about him. He’s pretty shy with strangers.”
“Oh. Is it ok if I go talk to him?” Envy asked.
“Absolutely.” Wart answered. “He went into the kitchen.”
“Thanks. Nice meeting you, Wart.” Envy said.
“Be careful. He may try to run.” Wart said. Envy then went into the kitchen on the right. Inside the room, pots and pans were scattered all over the floor.
“Hello?” Envy said. She slowly approached a cabinet under the island in the center of the room. When she opened it, she found Simon hiding inside. Simon gasped as she found him. “Hi.” Envy said. Suddenly, Simon disappeared and reappeared behind Envy. Envy turned around and watched him run out the kitchen. “Hey! Wait!” Envy cried as she ran after him.
“Go away!” Simon said as he ran out the house and flew away.
“Sir, wait! I don’t want to hurt you!” Envy shouted as she flew after him
“Just stay away from me!” Simon yelled. The two dragons chased each other through the mushroom forest, and then the caverns for several minutes. Eventually, Envy landed in exhaustion and lost Simon as he flew back into the mushroom forest. When she finally ran out of breath, she flapped her wings and rose back in the air. She looked around the mushroom forest and saw Simon sitting in front of a pond alone. She landed a few meters behind him.
“Sir, please. Just let me help you.” Envy said.
“You can’t.” Simon said. “You can’t help this monstrosity! This….I don’t know what I have become! E....everyone is afraid of me!”
“I’m not afraid of you.” Envy said. “I don’t think you’re a monstrosity.”
“You’re lying. You are afraid of me.” Simon said. “Just like everyone else who has crossed paths with me!” Simon then started becoming distressed. “All I can feel is chaos and light!......No matter where I go!” he said in a shaky voice as tears dripped from his eyes.
“Sir?” Envy said a little worried.
“Admit it! Admit that I really am a monster!” Simon yelled.
“S….sir I….” Envy trembled.
"Admit it!" Simon screamed. The forest grew silent as his scream echoed through the cave.
"N…no…..you’re not a monster." Envy said. "All I see is a lost soul that is trapped in a cave. A lost soul with no friends…..No family……..No one to find them………Lost souls like….me~” Tears began dripping from Envy’s eyes as she whimpered. “You’re not the only one who should be upset~” Envy ran towards Simon and hugged him. At first, Simon was reluctant to do anything, but he eventually hugged her back as more tears dripped from his eyes. After a moment of silence, Simon spoke again.
“Thank you.” he said in a calm voice. He let go of Envy. “I’m sorry for all the commotion earlier.”
“It’s ok.” Envy said as she stopped hugging him.
“My name is Simon, by the way. What’s yours?” Simon asked.
“Envy.” Envy answered.
“Envy, huh? That’s a nice name.” Simon said. Envy then noticed the antennas on his head. Upon closer inspection, she realized that they were not just antennas. Envy snapped her fingers up close to them to see if she was correct. The antennas wobbled and made a clicking noise as they reacted to the sound. Simon flinched a little.
“Ah! Why did you do that?” Simon said, a little annoyed.
“You’re a sculk dragon!” Envy said in shock.
“Why yes I am. At least I used to be.” Simon said, a little bit surprised that Envy knew. “How did you know that?”
“Back where I’m from, I’ve heard legends about your kind. I thought they went extinct many years ago.” Envy said.
“That was actually a lie. We-” Simon stopped when the sculk sensors on his head clicked. He looked in the direction of where he picked up the noise.
“What is it, Simon?” Envy asked.
“Somebody’s coming.” Simon responded.
“What!?” Envy said as she pulled out her two swords. Envy slowly approached the forest of mushrooms slowly, and then sliced the mushroom trees in front of her down, revealing the people that were approaching.
“Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!” The people shouted at her.
“Bonnie! Siss!” Envy yelled in excitement.
“Envy!” Bonnie and Siss shouted. Envy went to hug them.
“How did you find me?” Envy asked.
“Well when we came down here, we came across this weirdo being chased by a gang of angry skeletons.” Bonnie explained. Sarx revealed himself from the crowd.
“Hello again.” he said.
“Sarx!” Envy cried.
“You know this guy?” Siss asked.
“Yeah, I was tied up and she freed me.” the goblin tinkerer said.
“Anyways, then he took us to where she found him, and then we heard a bunch of yelling in the distance. And here we are.” Bonnie finished.
“Wait! Is that a sculk dragon!?” Siss shouted while pointing at Simon.
“A sculk what?” Bonnie said.
“Everyone, this is Simon.” Envy said. “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
“So, these are your friends?” Simon asked.
“Yup.” Envy answered.
“Envy, why didn’t you use your magic mirror to get out?” Bonnie asked.
“Because this happened to it.” Envy said as she showed them her broken magic mirror. Siss gasped.
"How did you break it?" Bonnie asked.
"I broke it when I was being attacked by a salamander." Envy answered. "And no, I haven't been able to find another one."
"Jeez. Well, good thing I brought my own with me." Bonnie said.
"Actually, I believe I can fix it." Sarx said.
"Wait, you can?" Envy asked.
"Of course. I can reforge anything. That, your weapons, even your armor, but usually at the cost of money. Due to the current situation however, I will do it for free."
"Well alright then." Envy said as she handed Sarx her broken magic mirror.
“Well, I guess this means goodbye?” Simon said, depressed.
“What are you talking about? You’re coming with us.” Envy said. Everyone paused.
"Wait, what?" Bonnie asked.
"Wait, you're serious?" Simon asked.
“Absolutely, Simon.” Envy answered. "A poor soul like you does not deserve to be alone anymore."
"But Envy-" Bonnie said before Envy interrupted her.
"Bonnie, shut up." Envy said.
“Thank you, Envy!" Simon said. "Now let’s go!” Later, Simon finally finished packing everything.
“I can’t believe we’re officially moving up to the surface!” Wart said in excitement.
“I can’t believe it either.” Simon said. Envy sat down and looked at the rest of the mushroom cave from a distance.
"Hey." Bonnie said as she came to sit by Envy. "You ok?" Envy ignored her. Bonnie then sighed. "Look, I'm sorry for calling you a glutton earlier." She spoke. "I know I was very upset about the slimes, but that was very wrong of me to just burst out such an insult at you."
"I'm sorry I called you a scarecrow." Envy responded.
"Heh. It's fine, I guess." Bonnie said. "So, are we still friends?"
"Of course we are, Bonnie. Always." Envy answered. "No matter what happens to us."
“There we go. Good as new.” Sarx said as he brought Envy her magic mirror all fixed.
“Thanks, Sarx.” Envy said.
“Pleasure doing business with you.” Sarx said.
“Alright, everyone! Time to head back!” Envy shouted. The group then grabbed onto Envy. As Envy used her magic mirror, they all disappeared in a flash of blue light.
