Chapter 2 - Below the Surface
Envy ran away as soon as she saw the zombies. She immediately took out her shortsword and stabbed them one by one as she ran towards the house. A few seconds later, she used her magic to fire a powerful blast. The zombies snarled as they burned to death in darkrune fire. When Envy went to see what was left behind, she found quite a few things. A couple shackles, some gel from some zombies that had slimes on their heads, a zombie arm, and a lot of copper and silver coins.
“This could definitely replace that copper shortsword.” Envy said as she looked at the zombie arm. Just then, another zombie appeared behind her, scratching her back and making her yell. Envy turned around and punched the zombie in the face, breaking its nose. Right after that, she heard another wave of zombies approaching. She ran. Envy came in and slammed the door behind her. “Phew! That was close.” she said, panting.
“Envy, are you ok?” Andrew asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I just got scratched on the back.” Envy answered, revealing the scratch mark on her back.
“Ouch. Does it hurt?” Andrew asked again.
“A little.” Envy answered.
“It’s dangerous to go out at night. Especially if you’re defenseless.” Andrew said. “Trust me, without armor, you could die out there. By the type of material you have right now, you can make some wood armor. Tomorrow morning, I suggest you should head down to the caves and look for better material that you can make armor and weapons out of.”
“Alright.” Envy said. She then got up to the workbench, made a set of wood armor, and then put it on. “Soooo, how do I look?” she asked.
“You look amazing.” Andrew answered. “Not too shabby.” Just then, lots of banging came from the door. It was the zombies. Envy got ready to attack, but then Andrew stopped her. “Don’t worry, they can’t break the door down.” he said. “Come on, let’s go to sleep.”
The next morning, Envy decided to head west. Birds chirped in the distance as she wandered through the forest. After walking for almost 30 minutes, she found an entrance to a cave. It was a massive hole that led down to a pit of darkness. Without hesitation, Envy grabbed a torch and jumped down. At the bottom of the hole, it was really dark. As Envy lit the torch in her hand, the light shined throughout the cave, revealing a room with a series of tunnels.
“Jeez, that’s a lot of tunnels!” she said to herself. After a few minutes of deciding, Envy finally picked a tunnel. As she traveled further in, she suddenly fell down a hole in the ground. Envy hit the bottom with a splat. Her torch laid there on the ground, flickering its light. Envy slowly got back up on her feet, still stiff from the fall. She gasped in pain as she stretched her back. A loud crack echoed through the cave. Envy sighed in relief as she felt the pain diminish. As she picked up her torch and looked around her, she noticed there was yellow gel splattered all over her belly. She then looked underneath her to see more of the gel. “D…Did I land on a slime?” she asked herself. Envy shrugged and wiped the gel off her belly, putting it away in her inventory. As Envy looked around the pit she landed in, she discovered a new pathway that led deeper into the ground. With curiosity, she decided to explore there instead.
Somewhere deeper in the caverns, there was a dragon named Simon. He was a very anomalous being to all of the underground, fueled with the essence of light. Nobody really wanted to talk to him, as some were also scared of him. His only friend however, was a sapient worm named Wart, and has been by his side for the past several years. Simon missed his family, his home, everyone. He hasn't seen them for years. Simon thought that this would be his fate forever; being feared by the underground as a monster. All of that however, was about to change. Simon was sitting in the darkness alone, one day. His eyes, horns, and parts of his body glowed in a neon pink. He also had strange looking tendrils on the sides of his head. As he sat there, he thought about many memories from his past life. He sighed. “I wonder if the kingdom was able to find a replacement for me.” He then stared down at the ground. “Maybe I wasn’t meant to rule anyways.” Suddenly, the tendrils on his head clicked and vibrated for a second as Simon began to hear something. Simon noticed an orange light shining from a hole in the cave wall up above him. From the vibrations, he could tell it was the sound of someone mining. Simon flew up to the hole with his wings and clinged on the wall with his claws. When he peeked his head from the hole, he could see a torch glowing in the darkness alone. That wasn’t his main focus however. Standing next to the torch was an anthropomorphic dragon-like figure wearing armor made of wood. The dragon was continuously swinging their copper pickaxe at an exposed batch of tungsten ore. When they picked up a chunk of the ore and turned around, Simon could see that it was a female. Her face was covered with black scales, and her eyes glowed in a shimmering purple. Simon blushed as he saw her face. Whoever she was, she was very beautiful to him. He had never seen a species like her before.
Envy wiped the sweat off her forehead as she stared back down at the remaining tungsten ore. She groaned in exhaustion.
“Why did mining have to look so easy?” she exclaimed. As Simon continued to watch her from afar, his hand accidentally pushed over a pile of rocks, making a loud noise as they tumbled. Simon then quickly ducked down as Envy turned around and stared at the hole. Envy gathered up all the loose ore remaining and pulled out her zombie arm. “Hello?” she called out as she stared at the hole. Just then, a bone hit her on her side. Envy clenched the side of her stomach as it ached.
“Get her!” A voice yelled from the left. A gang of skeletons were charging towards her with weapons in the air. Envy ran away from the skeletons as fast as she could. Luckily, she found an abandoned two story house nearby. Without hesitation, she went inside the house to hide. As she stopped to catch her breath, she could hear the skeletons talking outside.
“Where did she go?” one skeleton asked.
“Maybe she went into that house over there.” another skeleton said.
“Alright, split up. You, go check that house. We’ll check over here. Those scales could be worth a lot of money.” the leader said. Envy quickly ran up the stairs, but when she got up there, there wan no place for her to hide. In the middle of the room however was a gold chest.
“Where are you?” the skeleton yelled as he kicked open the door to the house. “If I find you, I’m gonna make a leather jacket out of you.” Envy peeked at the skeleton from the stairs while holding a mace she got from the gold chest. She watched the skeleton as he searched the entire bottom level. Suddenly, the skeleton saw Envy’s eyes glowing in the dark. “There you are!” the skeleton yelled as he laughed like a maniac while running up the stairs. When he reached the second story, he didn’t see her anywhere. Envy was hiding in a corner on the ceiling. While the skeleton’s back was turned, Envy then jumped down and cracked his skull open with her mace. The skeleton then fell to the floor, truly lifeless. As her blood pressure went down, Envy then pulled out a strange mirror she got from the gold chest. She gazed at her face in the reflection.
“Look at yourself, Envy,” she said, “All alone in a strange world with killer monsters everywhere, yet you’re still beautiful.” Suddenly, a blue light began to glow from the mirror. As Envy stared at the mirror with curiosity, she then disappeared in a flash of blue light.
