Chapter 8 - Worm Fodder

{Envy: "Ivan please wake up! I can’t do this without you!"

Ivan: "E…Envy…"

Envy: "Ivan?"

Ivan: *drops dead*

Envy: *turns around*

Lord Drax: "You’re just a child! A weak, unskilled child!"

Villager: "You don't belong in this village, monster!"

General Snare: "Alien!"

Envy: *suddenly falls into a dark hole* ; *looks up and sees a floating purple orb glowing at the end of a tunnel before being snatched away*}

Envy woke up from another nightmare. She looked at the clock and it said it was 3:00 AM.

“Goddamn! I woke up that early?” she said. Envy wanted to go back to sleep; however, she still couldn’t stop thinking about that shadow orb, back in the Corruption. It has been a week since she explored the west. It almost felt as if the shadow orb was calling for her to go back there. Restless, Envy decided to take matters into her own hands and resolve whatever this was herself. So, she got out of bed, packed up her supplies, and wandered off into the darkness of night. Eventually, Envy finally arrived back in the Corruption. As she stared at the purple grass, she then remembered the purification powder that Calista gave her. She took out one bag of it and tossed the powder over the grass. As the powder landed on the grass, the grass turned from purple to normal green grass.

“Wow! This really does work!” she said. Envy then started tossing the rest of the powder all over the place. When she ran out, she realized that this task was harder than she thought. “Well then. If I’m ever planning to purify this whole area, it would take a very, very long time….” she said as she groaned. A little further, Envy came across the same chasm she fell in. With a deep breath, she lit a torch and glided down into the darkness. When she reached the bottom, she placed her torch on the wall and lit another one. The chasm almost looked just as she found it. Envy looked around and found the hole that the shadow orb was in. She glided down and looked around in the empty pit. Shards of the shadow orb lie on the ground along with something blue under them. Envy dug through the shards and found a blue wristband with a star on it.

“Hm. I wonder how this got here.” she said as she put the wristband in her inventory. Envy then flew out of the hole and continued exploring the chasm. After exploring for an hour, Envy had the entire chasm lit up with torches. While she was exploring, she found even more shadow orbs. “There are so many of these orbs!” she said to herself. “I don’t know why, but I’m curious to know what happens if I try to break all of them.” As Envy broke one of the shadow orbs with her hammer, she felt the same horrible chill from before. In the debris, there was a ball of hurt flail left behind. Envy picked up the ball of hurt and examined the purple mace. As she did, she gave it a test swing before putting it away in her inventory. Envy found a second shadow orb that was surrounded by ebonstone. She tried to mine the ebonstone, but her pickaxe wouldn't break it. As an alternative solution, she decided to destroy it by blowing it up with some bombs she bought from Dolgrim. The bombs were a success as they destroyed both the ebonstone and the shadow orb. In the debris was a wand that looked like a thorn. Envy had no idea what it was, but she took it anyway. Just then, she began to hear screams echo around her. Envy looked around desperately to find the source of the screams, but they felt as if they were everywhere. After 1 minute, the screams faded away. Envy was starting to grow paranoid and feel as if she shouldn't be here. Despite her fear, her curiosity got the better of her. She then came up to a third shadow orb. Before she could smash it with her hammer however, a voice spoke behind her.

“Envy?” the voice said. Envy screamed and turned around to find Bonnie and Siss behind her while also dropping the hammer.

“Bonnie? Siss? Wh...What are you doing here?” Envy asked.

“First of all, what are you doing out here at this time of night?" Bonnie asked. "We were worried about you, Envy.”

“Yeah, you’ve been acting strange lately.” Siss said.

“Is something wrong?” Bonnie asked.

“What? No, I’m sorry, guys. I just couldn’t sleep.” Envy answered. "I just felt like exploring."

“Ehh, it’s fine I guess.” Bonnie said. “I don’t even sleep that often anyways. Still though, you could've gotten hurt."

"Again, I'm sorry." Envy said.

"Let’s just get out of here.” Bonnie said. As soon as she and Envy started walking out, Siss turned around and noticed the shadow orb. She then noticed the hammer that Envy dropped.

“Hey guys!” Siss shouted. “Check out this cool looking orb that I found! I think there’s something inside of it!” Envy turned around and saw Siss standing in front of the shadow orb with her hammer.

“Siss, no! Don’t touch that!” Envy yelled. But it was too late. Siss swung the hammer and smashed the shadow orb. Suddenly, a loud shriek echoed throughout the chasm, and all the other shadow orbs, one by one, shattered on their own.

“What the hell did you just do!?” Bonnie yelled.

"Umm……Whoops!" Siss said. Just then, the ground below them started vibrating.

“Run! Now!” Envy shouted. As soon as the three ran, the Eater of Worlds rose from the ground and started chasing after them. Siss looked back to see the giant worm-like creature with multiple eyes. She screamed and flew away on her flying carpet. Bonnie turned around and saw the creature.

"Holy shit!" She said. She then fired her musket at it 3 times.

“There’s the exit! Hold on, everyone!” Envy shouted as grabbed Bonnie and Siss and flew straight for the exit. The Eater of Worlds then blocked the exit with its long body, trapping the girls. Envy then turned to see the Eater of Worlds charging towards her. She quickly dove down and crashed to the ground, letting go of Bonnie and Siss.

"Well that blows!" Bonnie said.

"Now what do we do?" Siss asked.

“Leave this to me, girls.” Envy said as she pulled out her light's bane and blood butcherer. "I'm getting us out of here no matter what!"

"Let us help you out, Envy." Bonnie said as she pumped her musket. "You’re not gonna be able to fight this thing alone."

"Watch out!" Siss cried. The Eater of Worlds then slithered by, grabbing Envy with its mandibles. Envy then stabbed it in one of its eyes with her light's bane. The Eater of Worlds screeched and dropped her before burrowing back into the ground. "Envy!" Siss yelled as she ran to help her. Suddenly, the Eater of Worlds rose up and swallowed Bonnie. Envy yelled in anger as she saw her friend get eaten. She then flew straight at the Eater of Worlds and cut it in half with her ball of hurt. One half of the Eater of Worlds escaped, but then the other half grew a face and devoured Envy. Shortly after however, that same half screeched as a blaze of purple fire raged from its body. Envy then blasted through its belly and tore it bit by bit, leaving nothing left. Once she was done, she then roared at the top of her lungs with pure rage. The other half of the Eater of Worlds rose out of the ground and charged towards Envy, until suddenly, strange glowing arrows began coming out of its throat. Eventually, the Eater of Worlds' head split off as another individual segment with Bonnie tearing her way out. Envy swung her ball of hurt around herself as the smaller segment came to devour her, which she then destroyed. Bonnie stood in front of the larger segment with a bow armed with a jester arrow. The larger segment retreated as it grew a new face.

"Bonnie, you're ok!" Envy said.

"Of course I am, Envy," Bonnie said, "No living thing can digest me."

"Bonnie!" Siss cried. Just then, she fell over as the Eater of Worlds rose from behind her and dug its way into the chasm ceiling. Bonnie continuously fired her jester arrows at the monster, piercing through its body. Siss stood up and summoned her finch minion as she continuously whipped the monster's belly. The Eater of Worlds then popped its head out from the ceiling and dove towards Siss. Before it could reach her however, Envy stood in front of it and flung her ball of hurt down its throat, destroying a good chunk of it as a whole. Green blood showered all over her and Siss. That was when Siss had enough.

"That's it! Stand aside, Envy!" She said as she ran to a spot far enough away from both Envy and Bonnie. The Eater of Worlds stuck its head out from the ceiling once more and locked onto her. As it charged towards her, Siss's body hissed and glowed as she prepared to explode. A few seconds later after the Eater of Worlds swallowed her, a blast of green guts and blood was splattered all over the chasm. Envy walked over to Bonnie as she watched what just happened.

"You think she's ok?" She asked.

"Like I know!" Bonnie replied.

"Siss?" Envy called out. Siss then jumped up and started hollering with adrenaline.

"Yeah! Get f**ked!" She shouted.

"How are you not dead?" Bonnie asked.

"I have no idea." Siss responded. She then noticed something in the remains of the Eater of Worlds, a treasure bag. As she picked up the bag, she also picked up some scales that she noticed flaking off the skin. "Hey, guys. Check this out." She said as she held up the objects.

"Siss, toss me that bag." Envy said. Siss then tossed her the bag. Envy caught it and put it in her inventory. "Thanks."

"What else do you have there, Siss?" Bonnie asked as she noticed the shadow scales in her other hand.

"Oh these? These are shedding off of the skin." Siss said. "Envy, you think these could be important?"

"Possibly," Envy said, " Andrew may know."

"So you're saying we should collect every single one of these scales?" Bonnie asked.

"Just collect as many as you can, Bonnie. Come on." Envy said.

"Ugh! Fine." Bonnie responded. After the girls collected enough shadow scales, they then escaped the chasm. When they reached the surface, they could see the morning sun rising in the distance. Then suddenly, slime started falling from the sky.
