Chapter 24 - It’s Getting Hot in Here

Back at the house, the group opened the Brain of Cthulhu treasure bag. Inside was a bone rattle, a brain in a jar, a Brain of Cthulhu relic and trophy, some lesser healing potions, a Brain of Cthulhu mask, some crimtane ore, some more tissue samples, and a brain of confusion. Sombra took the brain of confusion since she didn’t get a cool accessory yet. The bone rattle and the brain in a jar which both summoned pets, were donated to some of the townspeople. The other pets from before started following some of them instead, anyways. Envy asked Andrew what the difference was between armor made from demonite and crimtane, as he stated that both of them had the exact same amount of defense. Andrew explained that while the shadow armor has a set bonus of increased movement speed, the crimson armor has a set bonus of increased life regeneration. With that, Envy made three sets of crimson armor. One for herself, one for Simon, and one for Haydn since each of them asked for a set. Siss and Sombra however, wanted to keep their shadow armor since they preferred the better movement speed. At some point during the day, Bonnie found Tyler sneaking around with the bone helm she found in the dungeon. She asked him why he took it, but he refused to answer. Bonnie did manage to get it back though.

The next day, The group went deep into the caves to explore the Underworld. This time, Wart came along with them. Eventually they reached a layer where lava pools became common. Lava could also be seen oozing from some of the walls. The group was starting to get tired. They've been down there for hours.

“Ugh! How much deeper, Simon!?" Bonnie complained.

“We’re getting close.” Simon said. “I can tell.”

“Is Andrew even telling the truth about this place?” Bonnie asked, “I mean, he told us stuff that he should’ve told us a long time ago.”

“What are you talking about, Bonnie?” Envy asked.

“That book could just be talking about religion related stuff. The Underworld might not even be actually down here.” Bonnie answered.

“Hey, I know what I saw.” Simon said, “Me and Wart know what we saw, down there.”

“Yeah!” Wart said.

“Come on, guys.” Siss said, “We’ve been exploring for hours. Maybe we should just go home.”

“I would agree with Siss.” Spade said.

“We can always try again tomorrow.” Sombra said. Envy sighed.

“At this point, I don’t even know anymore.” she said. Just then, a giant shelly fell from above and bashed into Haydn. Haydn yelled as he fell down a hole.

"Haydn!" Sombra screamed. Everyone jumped down the hole. When they reached the bottom, they could see Haydn lying on the ground. Next to him was the giant shelly slowly crawling towards him. Bonnie shot it, but only hit its shell. The giant shelly then turned over to Bonnie. It tucked itself into its shell and hurled itself towards her as it spun. Suddenly, shadow hands appeared and tore the giant shelly apart. Bonnie sighed in relief. Sombra teleported over to Haydn, who still had his face in the ground.

“Babe, are you ok?” she asked.

“I’m good.” Haydn muffled as he gave a thumbs up. Sombra then picked him up by the sides. Haydn’s face was black.

“Hey, what’s that all over your face?” Sombra asked. Haydn rubbed the black stuff off his face. He looked at his hand and saw a dark gray powder that smelled like smoke. Haydn then realized that it was ash. As the others looked around, they noticed that there were ashes all over the ground. They all looked at each other, confused.

“Uhh, guys….” Siss said as she stared at something. The others looked over and saw her staring at an open tunnel. As they walked over to the end of the tunnel, they could see a world full of islands of ash and molten ores over a sea of lava. The air felt as if standing near a roaring fire. Demons and flaming bats could also be seen flying all over the place. Everyone stared in awe at the molten world.

“Holy hell!” Bonnie said.

“Simon, is this….?” Envy asked.

“Yes it is, Envy…..” Simon answered, “.....Guys, welcome to the Underworld.”

“Th-there’s…s-s-so much…lava.” Spade said, in a shaky voice.

“Indeed there is.” Wart said.

“I never thought we would come back here.” Simon said.

“Guess Andrew was right after all. Eh, Bonnie?” Sombra said.

“Damn right, you are.” Bonnie said. A few moments later, Envy and Simon glided down to the bottom. The others used ropes to follow them. Wart was also hanging on to Simon’s shoulder.

“Now be careful, everyone.” Simon said. “As you could see, there’s lava all over the place. Other than that, there’s also lava slimes, hellbats, bone serpents, fire imps, and-”

“Demon!” Siss cried. As soon as she said that, a demon swooped in and casted three demon scythe projectiles at them. Everyone scattered as the demon scythes rained down like meteorites. Envy then flew after the demon and cut it in half with her muramasa. The demon fell into the lava below. Envy returned with blood splattered all over her.

“Got’em!” she said.

“Nice.” Bonnie said.

“E-excuse me, Envy…” Spade said as he raised his hand.

“Yes, Spade?” Envy replied.

"I have a quick question." Spade said, "Didn't you do this thing where you lit your sword on fire, cause I thought you did?"

"Huh?" Envy looked confused.

"Oh my God! I know what he's talking about, Envy!" Siss said. "Remember that new trick you learned back from our journey to the Temple of Notch?"

"Wait, that one?" Bonnie asked. Eventually, it all came back to Envy.

"Oh! You mean this one?" She asked as she then sprayed her muramasa with purple fire. The muramasa lit ablaze. Simon and Haydn were both shocked about what they saw.

"Yeah, that!" Siss said.

"Now I remember!" Sombra cried.

"Woooow!" Wart marveled.

"That looks amazing!" Haydn said.

"Envy, you never told me you could do that." Simon said.

"I forgot I even could for some reason." Envy said.

"I think we all did." Sombra added on.

“I’m surprised that we even forgot about it, because that would’ve been very helpful against some of the other threats we faced.” Bonnie said.

“I can’t blame you, Bonnie.” Envy said. Just then, Haydn noticed something in the distance. It was a building.

"Hey, guys. What's that over there?" He said as he pointed at the building. The group approached the building. Up close, it was very tall and looked to be in a moderate state of disrepair, as there were holes and cracks in it. The group walked into the building through one of the holes. On the inside, it looked somewhat cozy. There was furniture and still lit torches and candles all over the place. The fire on these light sources however, were purple.

"Huh. For a broke down building, this place looks like someone still lives here."  Bonnie said.

"Yeah, it's weird that all the lights are still lit." Sombra said. The group investigated upstairs. On the second level they found a locked shadow chest with pots surrounding it.

"Guys, look!" Siss cried, "A chest!"

"Look at all those pots around it!" Sombra said.

"I call dibs on smashing them!" Bonnie shouted.

"Bonnie, wait!" Sombra yelled. Bonnie ignored her and began to smash the pots open. Sombra facepalmed herself. "Aye ye ye!" She said.

"Alright then, I guess the shadow chest is mine then." Envy said.

"Did you bring the key?" Simon asked.

"Yup, got it right here." Envy said as she pulled out the shadow key. She walked over to the shadow chest and turned the key as she inserted it into the hole. When she opened it, she found a dark lance, some inferno potions, and some meteorite bars. “Wow!” Envy said as marveled the dark lance in her hands. Just then, a fire imp appeared in the room. He then noticed the intruders.

“Hey! What are y’all doing in my house!?” he yelled.

“What the f**k!?” Bonnie jumped, holding a bunch of items. Everyone froze.

“Uhh, hi.” Envy said, “We don’t want any trouble or anything…”

“Well, you better put that stuff back, or else I’m going to burn you to a crisp!” the fire imp said as it conjured fireballs in its hands. Bonnie quickly pulled out one of her handguns and shot the fire imp in the leg, still holding the items. The fire imp then yelled in agony as it fell to the floor. Bonnie then put the items into her inventory.

“Everyone, take cover!” she yelled as she lit a bomb and tossed it into a corner. The bomb exploded, creating another hole in the building.

“Go!” Envy yelled. The group then escaped through the hole and fled the scene. Eventually, they stopped to catch their breath.

“Well that was unexpected.” Sombra said, breathlessly.

“Tell me about it.” Haydn said. Bonnie then pulled out one of the items she got, which was a black potion in a round bottle.

“Bonnie, what is that?” Envy asked as she noticed Bonnie holding the potion.

“I have no idea, Envy.” Bonnie said. She then noticed a label on the bottle. “‘Obsidian Skin’…” she read aloud.

“Huh?” Envy said in confusion.

“That's what it says on the label.” Bonnie said.

“That almost sounds like a fire resistance potion.” Envy said. Just then, Haydn yelled and started hopping on one foot.

“Ow! Frick!” Everyone looked at him.

“Babe, what happened?” Sombra asked as she went to help him.

“I just stepped on something hot!” Haydn said, still holding his foot. Spade then noticed something behind Haydn.

“Hey, what’s that behind him?” he asked. Sombra looked at Spade and then the other direction. There was a chunk of molten ore in the ground.

“Hey, guys. You may wanna come check this out.” she said. All of them walked up and observed the molten ore. Haydn slowly stood up and saw the ore.

“Was that what I stepped on?” Haydn asked.

“What is that?” Spade asked. Envy slowly approached the ore and tapped it with her nightmare pickaxe. Lava slightly bled from the ore.

“Wait, I recognize that!” Simon said.

“What is it, Simon?” Envy asked.

“It’s another one of those lava rocks!” Wart cried.

“I remember that these are super hot to touch.” Simon explained, “They bleed lava when you hit them…..” Simon then paused. “Wait, didn't Andrew talk about something similar to this?" There was a moment of silence. Envy then realized what that ore was.

"Simon, that's not just any lava rock." She said, "That’s hellstone!"

"Hold up!" Bonnie said, "That’s the hellstone Andrew has been talking about?"

"Only one way to find out." Envy said, "Pass me that obsidian skin potion." As Envy drank the potion she began to mine away at the hellstone. Lava oozed from the ore as it crumbled into pieces. Envy picked up the hellstone. As she touched it,, her hands did not burn or get hurt in anyway. Everyone, including herself, were amazed, yet a bit uncomfortable at what they just witnessed.

“Ok, I know fire resistance potions are a thing in our world, but that is just freaky.” Sombra said.

“D…does it even hurt, Envy?” Siss asked.

“No,” Envy answered, “Not at all. In fact, this hellstone feels more like a rock that has been warmed up by fire.” Envy then looked at the lava pool that was in front of her. With curiosity, she jumped into it. Nothing happened. She then sat back and relaxed. “You guys need to come try this! this feels like a jacuzzi!” she said. Envy was now less uncomfortable than she was a few seconds ago.

“Envy, can you please get out? You’re making us very uncomfortable just watching you.” Bonnie asked. Envy sighed.

“Fine.” As she stepped out however, the others noticed something wrong.

“Envy, your armor!” Siss cried. Envy was confused at first, but then gasped as she looked down. Her armor was slightly melted. Her worm scarf was also on fire. Envy quickly took off the scarf and beat it against the ground. Eventually, the fire went out. The worm scarf now had some scorched spots on it.

“Well then, I guess that potion is an epic fail.” Bonnie said.

“I….I guess this is fine.” Envy said as she put the burnt scarf away.

“What do you mean it’s fine!?” Haydn said, “Your armor’s melted!”

“Yeah,” Envy said, “But……I don’t know.”

“Well, at least it will look cool once it cools off.” Wart said.

“Yeah, I guess.” Envy said.

“Well that sucks that our armor can't survive the lava." Sombra said.

"Wait, if our armor will melt when in the lava," Siss said "wouldn't that mean our-"

"Our clothes would get incinerated too." Envy said.

"What does that mean?" Simon asked as he blushed, slightly.

“I think that would mean we would have to take off our clothes~” Envy said, blushing as well.

“Aw hell no! I am not doing that!” Bonnie said.

"Yeah, I think I’ll pass." Haydn said.

"You and Simon can do that." Sombra said. "But I'm not getting naked in front of everybody, especially Haydn." Haydn drooped a little bit in response.

"Bah! Why are we even talking about this?" Bonnie said, "We've got the hellstone, now let’s go!"

"Alright, impatient!" Envy yelled back. Later, the group explored more houses and got things such as a sunfury flail, a flamelash wand, a flower of fire, a treasure magnet, and a hellwing bow. However, there were no hellforges so far. Eventually, the group came across another house, but this one was made of hellstone bricks. They decided to skip it since nobody wanted to get their feet charred. Instead, they moved on to the house that was right after it, which was a normal one. This house, however, was so tall that it was touching the ceiling of the Underworld. As the group entered, they could hear a noise coming from upstairs.

“The hell was that?” Bonnie asked.

“There’s something upstairs.” Simon said. As they went up to the second level, nothing was there. Another noise echoed from the floor above them. As they reached the third floor however, they could see a girl crouching against the corner on the opposite side of the room. The girl had long dark hair, white skin, and was wearing no clothing. She could also be heard crying.

“Is that a girl?” Sombra asked.

“How did she end up down here?” Siss asked. Just then, a demon flew into the room through a hole. The demon noticed the weeping girl.

“What the f**k?” the demon said to himself. He slowly approached the girl. Suddenly, Simon realized something.

“Wait a second, that’s not a girl!” he said, quietly. The girl then transformed into a nymph and attacked the demon. The demon yelled in agony as the nymph clawed and tore at his body. Everyone was in utter shock. The nymph then finished the demon as she tore its head off with her bare hands. Blood was splattered everywhere. The nymph then spotted the others peeking from the floor below.

“Simon?” the nymph said. Simon then recognized her.

“Wait! Charlie?” Simon and Wart said.

“Hey! Long time no see!” Charlie said, “Come on up here.” Simon and the others climbed up. Simon then went over and hugged Charlie. “I see you’ve made new friends.” she said.

“Oh yeah.” Simon said. He then let go of Charlie. “Charlie, this is Envy, my girlfriend. Envy, this is Charlie, another friend I’ve met in the caverns. We rarely see each other though.”

“It’s nice to meet you.” Envy said.

“Back there is Sombra, Haydn, Bonnie, Siss, and Spade.” Simon said as pointed at the others. Haydn waved.

“Interesting.” Charlie said.

“So, what brings you down here?” Wart asked.

“Eh. Felt like killing some demons.” Charlie said.

“What?” Envy said.

“Don’t question it.” Simon said. As they talked, Sombra noticed something next to the beheaded demon corpse. She teleported over to the corpse and picked up the bloody object. It was a demon scythe spellbook.

“Whatcha got there, Sombra?” Haydn asked as he walked over.

“Another spellbook it looks like.” Sombra responded. She opened the book and read the instructions on how to cast the spell. Just then, Simon’s sculk sensors clicked as he detected vibrations from below.

“Guys, get out the building!” he cried.

“Why?” Bonnie asked. A massive bone serpent burst through the building and dove into the nearby lava. Everyone quickly jumped out as the building crumbled and collapsed. As the group landed, the bone serpent rose from the lava and hissed at them menacingly, before lunging towards them with its mouth open. Sombra then casted demon scythes at the bone serpent, causing it to crumble and die.

“Whoa!” Sombra said in amazement.

“I have to admit, that was close.”

“Sombra, what was that?” Envy asked as she turned around.

“Oh. I found a new spellbook, Envy.” Sombra answered. “You’re welcome.”

“Oi! What did you do to my home!?” a voice yelled from above. The group looked up and saw a demon flying towards them with a swarm of hellbats behind him. Envy then noticed that the demon was holding something. As the demon swooped down, Bonnie used her bone helm to create shadow hands to hold it in place. Sombra then casted more demon scythes at the demon. The demon dropped the object it was holding as the scythes sliced him into pieces.

“Ha ha ha! Revenge!” Sombra yelled. The object then hit the ground. As Envy went over and picked it up, she could see that it was a doll. The others walked over to see the anomalous object she found.

“Envy, what is that?” Spade asked.

“It’s a doll.” Envy answered.

“A very odd looking one if you ask me.” Siss said. Sombra then noticed something strange about the doll.

“Wait, why does it look like Andrew?” she asked.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Simon said.

“I’ve never seen this before.” Charlie said.

“Let me see that.” Bonnie said. But as she touched the doll, her vision flashed. Bonnie freaked out as she watched the doll fall into the lava. Then there were various grotesque creatures all over the place. Bonnie tried to shoot them with her handguns, but the bullets had no effect. She threw a crossbone from her bone glove, still no effect. The ground then began to shake. As Bonnie turned around, she could see the same wall of flesh from her vision, approaching her at rapid speed. Her vision then flashed back to normal.

“Bonnie, are you alright?” Envy cried. Her and the others were staring at her.

“That’s no ordinary doll.” Bonnie said, traumatized.

"Wait, what are you talking about? Siss asked.

"That wall of flesh, I saw it again." Bonnie said. "I think….that thing is a voodoo doll."

“You know what? Maybe we should go home now.” Envy said.

“I would agree, I’m getting kinda tired.” Sombra said.

“You know, Charlie. You can come back to the surface if you want to.” Simon said.

“Yeah.” Wart said.

“I’d love to, Simon, but no thanks.” Charlie responded, “I’ve got better things to do actually.”

“Alright, suit yourself.” Simon said.

“Wait, where are y’all even going exactly?” Charlie asked.

“The surface.” Wart answered.

“Cool.” Charlie said. “Welp, see ya round.”

“Come on Haydn, we’re leaving.” Sombra said. Just then, Haydn turned and noticed something in the distance. There was a silhouette of a man, and he was staring back at him. The figure sprinted away as Haydn noticed him. “Haydn?” Sombra said. Haydn then shook his head and ignored it.

“Thought I saw something.” he said. Everyone then pulled out their magic mirrors. Charlie waved goodbye as they disappeared in a flash of blue light. She then looked around and realized something.

“Wait, how the heck am I gonna get out of here?” she asked herself.
