The winds of Apep are upon my sailFrom beneath the waves I hear the old ones sing their song

There is a fantasy novel titled "Ouroboros" by E.R.R.Eddison. It concerns an epic war on Mercury (tho the identifying of the world as Mercury appears to be forgotten early in the story). King Gorice XII vs. the heroes of another nation. Gorice XII and all the prior kings were actually the same person: the Gods -in their caprice- had him reincarnate or resurrect at each death. He is warned, however, that if he dies attempting and failing at major magic, a 2nd time he would be doomed to hell ! The boon would be broken. He had already died attempting major magic as Gorice V and a 2nd such failure will damn his soul.
Gorice XII used , in a brilliant chptr, major magic to seize and dispose of one of the 4 heroes. He had been killed by this hero as Gorice XI, in a wrestling match . and a quest is undertaken to retrieve the hero. The meaning of the title is given at the end.
Three related (?) novels ,MISTRESS OF MISTRESSES, A FISH DINNER IN MEMISON and the unfinished MEZENTIAN GATE , are hard to read, inter-tangled and confuse the reader as to who the characters are.
