Description Likely the ultimate machine of the Martians. Most often it is shown flying and kicking ass. I, however, chose a different path. You see, the Martians apparently never mastered using it in thick, earthly atmosphere and stronger gravity. They were only said to be "learning" to fly. Therefore I portrayed the machine in the grounded state, with several of Martians and Handling machines working on adapting/modifying/reinforcing it for those hard conditions. A task that they never finished. Several Martians (Wells - Martian (Invader) ), as well as their Handling Machines (Wells - Martian Handling Machine ), can be seen workingΒ with it, likely repairing or modifying it.

It kinda turned out like a pic from RTS game, but since I like this type of games a lot, this is probably very appropriate.

I wonder if this thing's heat-ray would have been mounted atop in a manner akin to the fighting-machine from the 1953 film. In any case, I like the notion that their flying-machine would need extensive modifications for Earth's heavier atmosphere and stronger gravity... yet another thing about invading Earth that the Martians didn't consider!

I didn't actually see the film. The Martians didn't consider many things but it can be forgiven due to how old this book is... besides, even today people make "science" fiction movies like Alien Covenant where dumb astronauts explore an alien planet without any environmental protections. Β

It gives one the impression of a clutch of spiderlings emerging from their nest; very creepy and otherworldly.Β

It reminds me a bit of the 1953 War of the Worlds movie, with it's flying "tripods" rather the true tripods.

It looks like the Martians were inspired by one of Wayne Barlowe's alien life forms.Β Β

This is I think my favorite thing you've ever drawn. It almost looks like the flying machine is a dead bird, and the other martian machines are like scavengers.
