Description The race of Alien invaders from Wells' book as hypotetically they would look in their native environment.  Their tentacles would allow thel to raise the main body instead of  dragging it on the ground. A Martian is basically a giant head and a pair of hands evolved into nimble tentacles.

I love this version of the Martians, and I really wish that we would see them accurately depicted as such in a major film adaptation rather than anthropomorphizing them. In 1953, I could understand b/c of the limitations of the film effects at the time, and I do appreciate the aliens modeling their fighting-machines off of themselves in Spielberg's adaptation, but at the same time they had the ability to replicate this accurately in CGI. Sorry, Steven, but that was a major missed opportunity.

Even better than CGI would be animatronics... If they used them this movie would be timeless as Jurassic Park

I shudder to think what the martians would do to a human specimen not selected for food...

I remember that Wells considered his martians to be the logical result of a humanoid species who were coddled by their technology for too long; with all their instruments and devices removing the strain of physical labor, torso, abdomen, and limbs would atrophy out of uselessness until only head and appendage remained. Although unlikely, I'm chilled at the thought of humanity looking like this in another 100,000 years, should we ever shun the burden of exertion.

I don't find this likely for the more time passes the more humans pursue beauty rather than pragmatism. So instead I think we will become fururistic 'elves', perfectly beautiful, non aging etc.

one of the best interpretations of a martian. they and their machines may look primitive but im remember well how helpless the humans were in the book.

If you consider the time when the book came out, the descriptions of the aliens technology was actually pretty impressive

Fictitious concepts for hypothetical Life On Mars prior to actual scientific progress revealing actual mars to be a sterile wasteland sometimes got absolutely absurd. The Salt Lake Tribune's conception of a single plant-creature grown so large that its individual vines stretching across the entire planetary surface are mistaken for canals by telescopic observers from another world deserves mention as do the slightly more plausible titular Seeds from Raymond Z. Gallun's Seeds of the Dusk .

Well, they theoritically could be descendents of humanoids, based on Wells' idea of human evolution in the future.

TheNightmareCooper In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2017-12-05 05:23:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't like that concept. It explains why the biology is so similar. If you had a head cannon would you write that as the Origin of the Grays?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KingsOfEvilArt In reply to TheNightmareCooper [2017-12-05 05:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Not really, but it was written at times where such an idea was considered fine.

It's very difficult to get the Martians wrong, but it's always so satisfying seeing them done so right. This is easily among my favorite illustrations of them! And easily the squishiest, too!

Will you be drawing the Selenites too?

Edit: Ah, never mind. I saw you answered that question below. First Men in the Moon isn't quite as great as War of the Worlds, but it's a fine story with a wide range of weird creatures. I can imagine the Mi-Go being fairly similar in terms of castes, perhaps even wilder given their surgical powers!

I can imagine the Mi-Go being fairly similar in terms of castes, perhaps even wilder given their surgical powers!Actually that's a good question, has any human ever seen an actual mi-go? Perhaps the winged, blob-headed crab monstrosity is just their equivalent of a spacesuit and the genuine creature is just the disembodied brain capable of being surgically transferred between artificially produced bodies specialized for different functions. Basically they're the Zoromes from The Jameson Satellite by Neil R. Jones.
