We arrived at Sarakiniko at Milos on a windy summer afternoon. The sky was blunt as always but we didn't care much; actually we were glad. We had one sole purpose that night and that was star trails. It was our first attempt and after reading various articles and drooling over the results it was time to create something of our own. Beautiful place Sarakiniko is. Huge limestone boulders carved at natures will over the years, it has been a photographers paradise for years and for the following four hours it was destined to be ours.
I know it is a simple composition but it is my first attempt at this and I didn't want to complicate things a lot. The base shot was taken after the sun had set and then after waiting for about 2 hours to get completely dark we took 30 consecutive shots of four minutes each to get the star trails. Postwork included stacking all the images and blending each layer in lighten mode.
Hope you like it. Can you spot the shooting star??

Good result and interesting variation on the technique that us Aussies use.... will have to think about it. Did you alter the blending mode on each of 30 layers?
I like that you have retained the light in the sky ffrom the base shot.
We use stacking software and 30 sec exposures and torches
eg Cains shot.[link]

each and every one except from the base layer which was my early twilight exposure.
tweaking involved some masking and some hot spot removal but it is pretty straightforward in general. The problem is the gaps in the star movement which can't be seen on the jpg but small as it is its still there so I am still on the look for a better method or a camera with enough juice to go for hours

are you using moise reduction? which gives a processing down time between shots. Turn it off set the cam to multishot and 30sec exposures and lock down the shutter. then allow stairtrails.exe to stack them.. the sky you get will be the sky thats there.. I expieriment with half an full moon nights and exposures.

no no noise reduction. i don't think startrails exe can handle raw. will see though. Thanks!

hello,
did you read this one two, I really liked it.
:thumb131014707:
your picture is great, one question:
with four mins, did you use the built-in noise reduction?(the d200 is not too good in dark situations, so I suppose you have the noise reduction activated)
If so, you have another 4 mins of reduction processing between each shot, that may fragments the line into a a dashed line of star trails, but that's not the case...so what did you do?
thanks.

KirlianCamera In reply to Schweinskopfsuelze [2009-09-15 09:32:28 +0000 UTC]
well something like this. the one I read was off dA.
no I didn't use the built in noise reduction, I would have a long gap in the stars if I did. There was a lot of noise in the pictures but in lighten mode you can't see it.

Yeah I spotted the shooting star, about 1/3 the way above the water directly under the O shape, right? Question wouldn't this have been the same using an ultra long exposure??

KirlianCamera In reply to na-sch007 [2009-09-15 09:33:24 +0000 UTC]
well the star is near the horizon line at the centre.
it would have been the same as far as the circle is concerned but I wouldn't be able to have such a bright background. Plus I don't have a battery that can run for two hours straight.

wow, that's a great composition!! i'm impressed
i've tried to take pictures of stars this summer and after some attempts i gave up because my camera's sensor started to get too hot and produced light spots in the pictures so thanks for your comments how to do it better!
..and i see the shooting star
