We arrived at Sarakiniko at Milos on a windy summer afternoon. The sky was blunt as always but we didn't care much; actually we were glad. We had one sole purpose that night and that was star trails. It was our first attempt and after reading various articles and drooling over the results it was time to create something of our own. Beautiful place Sarakiniko is. Huge limestone boulders carved at natures will over the years, it has been a photographers paradise for years and for the following four hours it was destined to be ours.
I know it is a simple composition but it is my first attempt at this and I didn't want to complicate things a lot. The base shot was taken after the sun had set and then after waiting for about 2 hours to get completely dark we took 30 consecutive shots of four minutes each to get the star trails. Postwork included stacking all the images and blending each layer in lighten mode.

It turned out great! I am planning to get into star trails during a trip to India in two weeks and if my results were even close to this I'd be very pleased! Did you stack the images manually? Or did you use the stacking mode in Photoshop? Anyway, thanks for the technical details! Best regards from Dubai

This is stunning. I adore the composition (nothing wrong with simplicity!) and the colors. Fav'd, in part because - just, wow - and in part because of the lovely details in your description! Just the settings taught me more about how to do these shots than any tutorial I've read.

I just suck when it comes to twilight, I have shot alot of startrails and can never get that last frame with the dawn colors to look right.

yes, I think I spotted the shooting star,unless it's a plane trail
Why don't you try taking a shot of the setting horison,cover the lens and uncover them after it's completely dark to get the star trails?

I read about star trails when I was about 6,in a stars book..it's amazing seeing it again..

if I did that I would have to wait with half the lens covered for a long time cause it doesn't get really dark for at least two hours after sunset
