well Open Canvas is designed specifically for the tablet, no matter what version you have. Pressure sensitivity in Photoshop CS can be turned on and off. So, if you have a mouse, Photoshop is probably your best bet. But if you are going for a "painted" look, that might be hard with a mouse. Good luck!~

I don't have PS either. Perfect...looks like I'm stuck on colored pencils then.

yes. The controls will look a bit different, and you have to be aware that all of OC1's layers are automatically "multiplied" But, OC1 works just fine. I used it for a loooooonnnnnggggg time. ^_^

When you say the layers are auto-multiplied, is this a bad thing?

sometimes. I find it annoying personally because it forces you to be a bit neater when you CG, because if your brush isn't set to 100% occupancy the layers before it show through. Of course its great for lineart and painted-looking CGs... but... just personal preference I suppose.

So basically you use a tablet.. which isnt helpful to those of us who cant afford one >< I didnt see any of thsoe options in photoshop before and I use it all the time and the shizit. Took a class over it and explored and everything. I have Open Canvas but never used it because its very confusing, in my perspective.

Sorry I don't use Photoshop that often when coloring, because it isn't sensitive enough for me. But if you want to adjust pressure, you need to click on the little tablet symbol and then adjust the fill to about %35 or so... and it gives it about the same feel as OC. ([link] for screencap of what I'm taking about) But yes, I use a tablet. Which makes sense since I have a laptop and coloring with a touch pad would be impossible.
right?
As for thinking OC is confusing, it can be.. but not anymore than any other program that you are unfamilar with. It just seems overwhelming because of all the little windows. Personally I close most of them and don't use them, only the tool bar, the brush control box, the navigator (has the little preview thing), and the color picker window thing. O_; Actually it reminds me of Oekaki ShiPainter... if that helps any.. probably not.. sorry. *dies*

Oh NO joke.. I can barely play games with a touch pad. I just wish I had a tablet.. then I would understand half of what you said and be able to do the same. I was just really dissappointed cus most peopel open with "You just need Photochop!" or "You just need Macromedia!" and Ive got those, then they begin halfway down with "And on the tablet.." and so on and so on. Its a big dissappointment.
I was just trying to figure out how to color. It seems the first time I did it in photoshop was a wonder. Its so amazing, but then the ones after that came out crap. And I cant figure out how to amke it look as good as some peopel make them (liek heise. Heise.deviantart.com) OMFG

Heise is the CG GOD.. I've been watching her for some time now, and even when she uploads her progress tutorial things I still find it nearly impossible to CG so nicely. She's way out of my league. Maybe I should upload a more detailed tutorial for color rather than a CG tut, yes?
But I do agree, the program certainly doesn't make the artist. I own both illustrater and painter and when I use them, it doesn't make me suddenly as good as... say.. koneko-sama: [link] who simply adores those two programs. Actually I suck at painter, I won't lie. Honestly if you have OC1, I recommend networking/pchat with a good artist and watch them draw/color. Thats how I learned. I used to do it with Kathy-sensei [link] years ago. You can also ask artists to send you an event file (for OC3). An event file is like watching an oekaki animation--you get to see how they actually do it. If you have OC3, I can send you some event files from some of my older art (I don't have any new art event files)
If all else fails, use lots of references for color. has some great color tutorials and several good palattes. He is definately a better person to ask in regards to color. (He's obsessed with the whole topic, let me tell you!)

Wow thanks! I have some peoepl faved already who do tutorials (inclusing a account here purely dedicated to photoshop tutorials.. that.. meraculously hasnt updated in months.. sadly..) but Im goign to fav all those people you linked! xD I think.. the way I learned.. someone sut said to lineart it and then color it. So I was liek ok.. how do I line art? And I just pencil my work, pen it, erase the pencil, scan it in, play with the contract and brightness til its good, then go aroudn with the stupid darned paintbrush and fill in holes, and erase thick lines.. very tedious.
Then I get to color.. which I seperate the sections into colors, and work hard, but all mien come out with that blocky black lining cus I cant seem to get ahold of doing it with layers. Compared to others I suck, but then again Im alot better than certain somebodies Ive seen.
I do have open Canvas.. I dont knwo what version, btu I go tit free online. ah jus tcheck its 4.00.01 with ENGLISH! xD Took me like 30 min to find it.
