Description The Blue Jay is one of my favorite birds. He is aggressive and humorous. One of his talents is mimicking calls of other birds, such as a hawk. They are a loud raucous bird, screaming "jay-jay-jay" as they approach, sort of like a warning, "make way-make-way" to warn off other birds. Sometimes you hear a nasal "too-wheedle, too wheedle" while it perches high above in the trees. Of course it has many other voices. It is playful as well and torments squirrels by flying in circles close to the ground while the furious squirrel chases. The chase is usually instigated by the Jay who has stolen seed from the squirrel's cache.

Full view is best.

Thanks...they are very pretty birds...noisy too. LOL
I especially like them because they provide an excellent warning system when you are walking in the woods. If there is a predator lurking they soon begin a very loud racket...then I can beware. Squirrels to much the same. Love em' all. LOL

I rarely see them here. Don't know why. More than a few chickadees and sparrows though!

Probably you wouldn't if you live in the city, although they do explore quite a bit. The little sparrows I like too...they are busy little fellows and catch a lot of the pesky little bugs that plague the flowers and gardens. Most people don't appreciate them, but they are busy fellows who do help out controlling insects.

actually, I live in the 'burbs. I've seen maybe 2 in my lifespan. I think maybe it has a lot to do w/most of the major woodland being closer to the rural?

Nah. More likely I just don't get out much

Tsk - tsk...you really need to get out and walk more. LOL Yes, I think they like the woodland best.

Yea, I used to walk a lot till I got a new job where I worked 10 hrs on my feet. Too exhausted, I fell out of the habit. But maybe this spring I can get back my gumption. There's a nature trail behind a golf course near my last job. Maybe I can get my dad and my camera and go....

We have a pair of jays who are at war with one of cats. Its hard to appreciate them when they are dive bombing your kitty. Even tho I know she gets too close to their nest! They are very clever and very loud!
