"How does a mullet-headed-jerk become the best fighter pilot the academy claims to have ever seen??" The tan-skinned boy grumbled, more or less to himself. The friend sitting beside him swallowed an impressive amount of food before wiping his mouth and glancing at him.
"Who, Keith?" He asked, frowning slightly. "Why do you ask?" Lance groaned, dropping his head onto the table with a dull 'thud.'
"Duh! Who else?" Said boy scowled, resting his chin on his arms.
"Is it because he's better than you at flying the simulator?" Hunk asked between a mouthful of lunch. His friend let out another groan and ran his hands through his brunette hair.
"No!" Hunk smirked.
"It is, isn't it?"
"Shut up! Just because he's better than me at one thing doesn't mean that I have to be jealous of him!"
"But you are," Hunk pointed out, eyeing the said boy from across the lunch hall. Their topic of interest was sitting alone, his back to them, probably eating his lunch. Hunk sighed and returned his attention to his whining friend.
"He's an orphan, you know." Hunk's words ripped Lance out of his state of self-pitying, and his head left the table so quickly it made Hunk jump.
"Really??" Lance momentarily forgot about hating the black-haired student, and glanced across the room at him.
"Yeah. Turns out if you work hard enough with nothing, you can still get into the academy. It's kinda depressing though, isn't it?" But Lance hadn't heard him. He wanted to figure this quiet kid out. The ravenette really didn't have any friends, and if he did, he never talked to them. The mullet-head just kept to himself, making every flying lesson look easy, while Lance himself struggled with the concept.
"He must think he's pretty smart..." Lance muttered. Hunk shrugged, still immersed in his meal.
"I guess. He seems to get pretty good grades in all his classes. I hear he was dropped off somewhere as a kid, too young to really know what was going on. He just picked up flying and hasn't stopped ever since," Hunk trailed off, staring at the now empty tray in front of him. He glanced at his friend's half-eaten plate. Lance absently shoved his food in front of his friend, who gladly accepted the gift and finished it off with ease. Lance jumped from his seat, his eyes filled with the recognizable light of determination.
"I'm gonna find out this 'mystery kid''s secret! And when I do, I'll finally be able to beat him at his own game!!" Lance's fist was clenched so hard his knuckles turn white. Hunk eyed his friend.
"Uhh didn't you hear the part about him being an abandoned orphan who made a life for himself despite the odds he face?"
"Nope! And I'm sure it's just some sob story he made up so he could get his way with the staff here!" Hunk sighed, knowing that once Lance had set his mind on something, there was nothing anyone could do to deter him.
"Whatever. Count me out." He glanced at the two empty food trays in front of him.
"Do you think they'll let us get seconds?" Hunk was surprised when he looked up to see that his friend was no longer standing next to him. Head swiveling madly, his jaw dropped to see Lance making his way towards the other boy's table. He leapt up, catching the table as it almost fell from the force of his movement. He raced after his friend, desperately calling out to him. Lance was in another world, not hearing his friend's pleas to leave the raven-haired teen alone. He stood behind him, puffing out his chest before slamming his hand down on the table beside him. The boy didn't even flinch, glancing indifferently up at Lance through black bangs.
"Can I help you?" The boy asked, clearly annoyed with Lance's sudden behavior. The piercing violet eyes were nothing like what Lance expected to see, but he quickly recovered and gave a cocky smirk.
"Yeah, you can, actually. So you're the academy's best student pilot, I hear?" Hunk skidded to a halt behind Lance, bent over to catch his breath.
"Don't... (huff) Lance... (gasp) Just leave (weeze) him alone... (belch) Man it is not idea to go running right after a full meal." The boy only glanced at the two boys, the boredom never leaving his eyes.
"What about it?" Lance's eye twitched at his seemingly unbothered response. How was he so calm about this?? Lance just walked up, clearly challenging him, and all he could come up with was 'what about it?'
"Well obviously I know what you're up to. And it's clear as day. So why not give up your secret now and let me take over for ya?" Lance grinned, placing his other hand on his hip and leaning over him. The boy only rolled his eyes at Lance's advances. The lunch room had gone silent, the other students pausing their conversations to watch as the class clown faced off with the quiet kid.
"What secret? Is that what you both came to bother me about? A secret that doesn't exist?" Lance had had enough of this kid's shenanigans. Hunk cleared his throat.
"No no no. I came over here to stop Lance from bothering you. In fact, it's time to go, Lance. Come on!" He pulled at his friend's arm, who merely shrugged off his hands and stepped closer to the boy.
"Oh, I see! You're trying to deny it, huh? Well, fine, then!" Hunk made another attempt to separate the two, but Lance wouldn't budge. "I now declare you my rival!" He poked the other boy's chest with a firm finger.
"Rival?" The other boy's eyebrows furrowed slightly. "Why? I haven't done anything to you."
"You must think you're soooooo smart for being the best pilot! Well guess what! One of these days I'm gonna take your spot as number one! What'll you do then, huh? You won't be so calm then, will ya??" Hunk finally managed to pry his friend off of the other student, leaving Lance to struggle as he was dragged across the floor and towards the door.
"That mullet of yours can't hold back all your secrets forever! Just who do you think you are??" Lance's voice rang down the hall as he disappeared from sight, leaving the other students to return to talking amongst themselves. Keith gave one last look down the hall before returning to his disturbed lunch.
"My name is Keith Kogane," he muttered, clenching his fork in a gloved hand. "And being the best pilot of this academy is only one of the million things I haven't done. I'll show you all that I'm more than just some good student and grad-A pilot.
Just you wait."
