Description
Warning! Really big image!Some explanation to be not misunderstood: This comic was inspired more by my history lesson than history itself. We were talking about WWI's begginings but didn't know about Secret Germany's Plan yet (actually it's called Shlieffen plan). So we came up with some ideas, why Germany attacked neutral Belgium and France, if it declare war on Russia: "Maybe their compasses were broken?" "Or their maps were drawn upside-down?"
I cut many facts in order to make this comic simplier and shorter, so you should know one thing: WWI's beggining was much more complicated.
while drawing this comic I started to like Belgium. I wish to see her in original manga some day ;3;
If you wonder about the title... it's of course a bit changed title of polish war comedy "Jak rozpętałem Drugą Wojnę Światową" ("How I unleashed the Second World War"). uh, I have to watch it >D

Well, after the first few pictures of this comic I somehow felt offended. You seemed to go with the "Germany wanted war so it declared war"-way. Being German myself I´m not proud on the Schlieffenplan and what later happend to Belgium, but I´m sick of the "you started two world war´s"-talk. After all it was Russia who had full mobilisation alongside our border while we were still trying to negotiate between Russia and Austria (our Emporor even thought about dropping the alliance with Austria so we could negotiate between the two, but that idea had to be dropped after Russia had it´s full mobilisation along our border) and actions against France and Belgium were only started when it became clear that both England and France would support Russia in a war against us (Wilhelm II stopped the Schlieffenplan on August 1 1914 because of a note from England which said that England would stay neutral in the upcomming war but a few hours later a new note came, in which it said that England wouldn´t stay neutral, so the Schlieffenplan was initiated).
But then I noticed that that wasn´t the case since it became way to weird for that: Germany believing that he was in Russia while he was actually in Belgium. You would expect him to know who his neighbour´s are and where east and west are. France´s "How could you?"-picture actually brought me to smile and your author´s note then cleared the rest of my questions. "Were their maps drawn upside down?", couldn´t help but smile at that again. Would have been a lot of maps. I like your Belgium she was really good drawn, especially her expressions were really well done. You should work more with her. So all in all a funny comic once I had noticed that it wasn´t meant to show the real happenings (at least not to the point I believed at first).
Yeah, WW1´s beginning is way more complecated then you would think. And they are still argueing about it. Last time I checked they were taking closer looks on England and some started to doubt, that it was really the German fleet that caused trouble between the two.
Sorry for my bad English.

I'm not good at WW1 history, since Poland didn't take part in it as a country and main thing we are taught is that after the war Poland regained its independence (still I quite don't know how it happened exactly). so reading your comment was interesting : ) and also for that reason I didn't make this comics serious. I didn't mean to show that Germany was bad country who started the war or anything like that. I don't think of wars as something that someone starts actually, because usually there are just some relations between countries and war is unavoidable. that's my opinion at least.
as for not knowing who his neighbours were... Germany was quite young country back then and could not know. besides in my head-canon Ludwig is somehow... scatty (if that's the right word for that).
I love Belgium since the first time I saw her in manga, but I wish I had more information about her, 'cause I don't like to work on anything without "background", historical or cultural.
I'm sorry I'm replying so late. I'm very happy about your long comments, they mean a lot for me, thank you! : )
Sorry for my English too, I haven't used it for a while.

Oh, no problem. Well, since your country wasn´t on the map it shouldn´t surprise me that you didn´t had WW1 a lot in school (we neither, I was just interested in it). About Poland and gaining it independence back, as far as we were thaught it could happen because the three mights that had polish terretories had actually lost the war and there was a vacum of power.
Did you know that one of the germans goals for the end of war was an "independent" Poland? It would most probably have been a german satellite state, but, hey better than what the Entente had planned for you (if I may say that). Or to be more precise not with you but more or less east europe. They planned that Russia can move it´s western border as it pleases. Through I think either Elb or Oder would have been the farest to the west.
But that aside I would like to ask you a question. Did german troops do something to your people like they did in Belgium? I´m curios for all I know is that at some point we had driven the russians out of Poland (as far as you can say Poland) and I realised I nether heard how we treat the poles.
Didn´t need my English for quite some time either so I hope you can still read it.

again, I'm sorry for late answer! I wanted to wait until I could remember something about Poles in WWI. But it didn't happen. it's just we are taught this part of history in general, European point of view; then war ends and tada! we have Piłsudski. totally out of blue.
(I even didn't know that Germans had driven Russians out of Polish later-territory). as for Entente plans and Russian border... I think it was the reason for a war in 1920, when Poles stopped Russians at Vistula (;

You forgot to mention that Belgium slowed the German army down for weeks, making the Von Slieffenplan fail and making the rest of the war possible. France and England actually tried to make the war move again (which resulted in mass slaughter of millions of soldiers) and Belgium hid in trenches behind the IJzer river. None of the Allies really won the fight on the battlefield until 1918 the German soldiers were so demoralized that even the Belgian army was able to free half of Flanders (North-Belgium)
PS: I love how you represent Belgium

hm, frankly speaking, I didn't know about it or not so detailed, for sure. thanks for telling me, I've learnt something new again ^^. that's really useful, since we are taught history in schools always from some nation's point of view - so some facts are cut, because they're not very important for that nation ^_- (cruel thing)
thank you once again and I'm really happy you liked her ^^
