From the moment she was born, Rani didn't like her little sister, Atieno.

Atieno was the sole survivor of Ananda and Sahasi's second litter, born during a rough and stressful birth. The rest of her littermates hadn't survived the birth; and Ananda was left tired and weak.

Whether it was due to post-partum depression, or a weakened immune system; Ananda began to grow ill afterwards, causing the rest of her family to worry. Her older sister, Kado, had already died after childbirth; and the Night Pride began to worry that they would lose their Queen. Sahasi almost never left his wife's side during this time, and little Rani and Baliyo couldn't quite understand why their mom wasn't doing much anymore.

Despite her mother's attempts to heal her, and trying to stay strong for her family and kingdom, Ananda's illness got worse. She managed to pull herself together for several months, before she eventually died in her sleep; the illness finally taking her.

After the death of the Queen, the royal family was in ruin. Surak had now lost both of his sisters, Janna had lost both of her daughters, Sahasi lost his wife; and Rani, Baliyo, and a young Atieno, had lost their mother. Janna reluctantly took the role of Queen again, in case Sahasi's grief caused him to join his wife. Several of the Pride's lionesses took care of the royal children, including their aunt, Nirmala.

Rani despised her baby sister, since her birth is what caused their mother to become ill, and eventually die. A lot of the Pride considered the little Princess to be a bad omen for the Kingdom, and she was shunned by many Pride members, including her siblings and father; though the little cub never knew why.

After that, Atieno spent most of her time with Nirmala and the Pride's newcomer, Zira; since the two liked the little cub. She didn't even seem to know that the Pride's King was her father, and often considered the two lionesses to be her parents. Though she often tried to make friends with her siblings, they usually avoided her, especially Rani. No matter how many times Janna told her that Ananda's death was out of anyone's control, the young heir refused to believe it. Rani had always be a bossy girl, and Baliyo was often quick to follow her lead, leading to Atieno not being able to stand a chance against her siblings' bullying, though Baliyo would often stop the teasing, and would feel bad about it; Rani didn't feel any remorse for her bullying towards the young lioness, often saying to her face that it was her fault for their mother's death.

Oh boy, did the bullying get worse after Sahasi died of heartbreak, leaving Janna as the sole ruler of the Pride, until Rani was ready to take her place.

Rani's bullying went from just harsh words, to straight up beating up her sister; claiming that she was a monster, managing to lead to the deaths of both the Queen and King, their parents.

Eventually, Atieno became a recluse, spending all of her time with either Janna, Nirmala, or Zira; she spent many days and nights wondering if she should leave the Pride, or end her life, since that's what the future Queen wanted. She tried to push the feelings away, attempting to make friends with any animal that she could, though they all refused, as if the lioness's sadness was too powerful for them to handle.

After Kion and Chaka joined the Night Pride, Atieno saw her siblings at the happiest that she had ever seen them. Both falling deeply in love with their betrothed, which was a nice change, at least. After Janna died of old age, and Rani became Queen, Atieno didn't attend the coronation; she stayed at the Lake of Reflection with Zira, telling her that neither of them had a purpose. Zira comforted the young lioness that her and Nirmala had basically raised, saying that if she didn't want to be a part of the Royal family, that she didn't have to. Atieno agreed, calling the former Outsider "Mom" for the first time since she was a baby.

Atieno cut ties with Rani, knowing that despite being related by blood, they were never sisters. Rani agreed, finally glad to be rid of the so-called scourge to the Night Pride's royal family, banishing her to the Pride's outskirts, where they would never see each other. Atieno agreed, and left the Tree of Life, with Zira following behind her.

Now that Rani was older, and had cubs of her own, she had mellowed out a bit, and would often see Atieno avoiding her, though she understood why, and wished she was a bit nicer to the lioness that was no longer her sister. Nirmala would often visit her adopted daughter and partner when she didn't have work, and sometimes Zira would return to the Tree to visit the rest of the Pride, but Rani almost never saw her former sister, and was only confirmed to be alive by either Nirmala, Zira, Baliyo, or Surak, since the lionesses were basically her moms, and the boys had their Guards that they would patrol with, making sure that there were no enemies in the territory.

Rani decided to withdraw her banishment, allowing Atieno to become part of the Pride again, though it was up to Atieno herself to decide if she would return.
