Description
I'll admit this was all inspired from recently learning about the life cycle of jellyfish and their two life stages. The purpose for all living things is to reproduce afterall.I feel nerdy that I become fascinated in this stuff but do not wish to become a scientist. I prefer science fiction.
--------
The Onion's ability to reproduce a single pikmin seed after an extinction is possible probably from a vacuole that stores emergency nutrients like in plants and can release it like an animal's liver if starved of food or to produce a pikmin seed.
Pikmin must be closely related to carnivorous plants as they respire like animals for chemical energy -hence they can drown quickly. They would use this energy as a metabolism.
Pikmin would still need to do photosynthesis to be able to respire but they would use respiration more since their body is less efficient for photosynthesis. If pikmin were any larger than they are now they wouldn't live for very long.
Drinking nectar helps speed growth dramatically and it has so much sugar that the pikmin probably needs to expend it, causing it to flower instantly. They probably use nectar as an extra food source because pikmin have an irresistable instinct to pull special grass where nectar can be found.
They are closey related Creeping Chrysanthemum because of the ambulatory root structures, but they require no photosynthesis and instead prey on creatures. This allows them to be larger.
Now to explain how they all have special elements and abilities... I'm joking! xD
This is all a fictional pikmin theory in general made by me. Unless it can be argued. Than that would be a prediction.

Yeah science!
I don't quite agree with you here on the formation of Onions, but everything else checks out. Though I would just like to add that Olimar's antenna was likely the real reason they reacted so favorably to him. It's like a pseudo-stem, complete with a bright orb of light instead of a leaf or flower.

Very good theory! Although, I've always wondered how pikmin seem to know that any ship part or treasure needs to be carried to Olimar's ship. So, I've come up with a theory.
From a pikmin's perspective, Olimar's ship is like a high-tech onion that flies by shooting fire. (The ship's rocket thruster.) They seem to think this because Olimar goes into his ship to fly away from the nocturnal creatures just as a pikmin would with its onion. Along with repaying Olimar for his leadership just like you said, the pikmin also carry the ship parts to Olimar's "onion" because the parts hold no nutrients for the other onions and they also sense Olimar's joy at seeing his ship parts.
Hope this is a good enough theory. ^^

One thing to add to candy pop buds. Maybe the reason a bud withers away, could be from it using too much energy to convert the different types of pikmin. I also remember that in the first game olimar states that the buds was a next step in pikmin evolution. This would mean that it could have just been a onion of a certain type that laid a certain type of see that matures into a candy pop bud. It could be a great tactic to protect pikmin from nocturnal predators if they have strayed to far from an onion. So when the sun rises they will dig themselves back up again. Another reason could just for conversion for the survival of one species. For example, maybe a pikmin species can sense when one variation is about to go extinct or is extinct so they will find the nearest candy pop bud of the dwindling species and convert their DNA to that species. I hope they explain all of this in pikmin 3 I also want to know what inside the onion looks like.

I believe that Candypop Flowers hack into the body of a Pikmin and act as a womb to the Pikmin. The Pikmin's body recognizes the Candypop Flower from pre-evelution and let it near itself. The Candypop will then replace organs and change the DNA structure. The Candypop will also take the nutrients in the Pikmin that are not needed such as the Igneous rock inside a Red Pikmin's skin cells when converting to a Blue Pikmin which does not need these minerals. It takes these nutrients to benefit itself. Now the only question I have about this process is how could it possibly go so fast like in the game?

What do you mean by that? Oh if your talking about how the Purple Pikmin don't have Onions I think that the Purple Pikmin might actually have an Onion and Olimar just didn't find one. Same for the whites too. Also to back up my theory, remember the good ending of Pikmin 1? Well there were a bunch of Onions with different colors then the ones Olimar finds, and among those Onions there was a Purple Onion. So yeah.

Well according to your theory White and Purple Pikmin could get onions in Pikmin 3. Pikmin mate later on in life, this meaning that female White and Purple Pikmin would produce bulbs, becoming an onion. Maybe even Bulbmin would get onions, though this is very nonlogical because Bulbmin start out parasitic.

hmmm. Oh, I've got a theory on the purple pikmin. Maybe there were like lots of big pellets and stuff in the area and few pikmin so they adapted by increasing there strength. And the weight thing, I think pikmin can like lift ten times their own weight, kinda like ants, so they became 10 times as heavy and logically they became 10 times as strong.

8) That's a cool theory, the stronger pikmin survived having being able to carry the heavier pellets present. I just wonder how their flowers have the ability to make purple pikmin. I wonder if they consume pikmin to make purple pikmin or make them reborn as purple pikmin.

I have to agree with Pikaman on that one. The purples and whites would come into existence the same way that the yellow and blue did, by adapting. I don't get how that would work for the Purple.... They would have no element or condition to adapt to.... I have a theory of how the red pikmin got it's fire resistance. If pikmin WERE created from a meteorite, maybe the cells adapted during the increasing speed and heat of the meteorite during it's travel across the solar system from the gravitational pulls of the different planets. But of course that's just a theory....

pikaman2008 [2010-07-05 17:11:43 +0000 UTC]
I have a theory why they have different element powers. You see there was originally only one species of pikmin but the there were times when a pikmin's onion bulb was dropped in a place that was either filled with fire, water, poison, ect. so the pikmin seeds were forced to adapt to resist those elements and stuff and also changed color and when those pikmin made onion buds they were different colors to.

kittydemonchild In reply to Xel963 [2009-11-24 03:32:59 +0000 UTC]
Well um... I guess pikmin would contain half of the genetic material that the Onion has, and when it comes across those CandyBubs, you know that a flower is a sex organ, they mate, but the pikmin gets sacrificed - like a sperm entering an egg, and well, those hybrid babies are the result.
What do you think about that? .... Yes I just looked at a pikmin as a sex cell.
I can smell an arguement for a sex cell not technically being able to create a living thing on it's own. But what if it could?
This is Nintendo. Try not thinking too hard about it. xDD

Indeed. You can only go so far with Nintendo and the shrooms.
Obviously they are pikmin reborn and changed... but WHAT are those flowers doing there underground!? Where do they come from!? They seem to just be waiting for pikmin specifically to place in its ovary and the pikmin want to be thrown in.
