What - a new drawing for the purebreds project?? You gotta be joking with me. But nope, here it is; at last, after ever too long, I've resumed my project again~ It felt good drawing a digital cat again, no kidding. u3uAnd here is one lil' Mapleshade for y'all. Remaining (mostly, excepting a single detail I'll be addressing) the same as her canon - well, her second and preferred - canon design. But I do prefer her tortoiseshell looks compared to the cream-and-white, since it kinda makes more sense with her suffix 'shade', and the contrast could enhance her 'evil effect' if need be. The only part of her design I removed was her so-called solid white tail. Sorry folks, but her grade of white spotting really isn't high enough for a tail gone completely white, so off it went~ Apart from that... I guess she could've been more ginger (since that's her predominant colour) but when I got this far into painting her I just... felt like the picture had come together, haha. ^^
If it isn't obvious, she's also a Norwegian Forest Cat (again, it's a breed I've used most in ThunderClan so it makes sense) and yes she's fluffy because I could never see her differently~
Enough about that. Character-wise; Mapleshade remains to date the only villain I ever liked. She had a backstory that explained her madness, and she had this cruelty about her that wasn't all about take-overs and forcing the clans under an evil rule; hell no, her character was around to spread misery for misery's sake due to her own want of revenge. And after mindless, boring antagonists like Tigerstar, Thistleclaw, Brokenstar etc etc. that was rather refreshing~
Buuut... 95% of all Maple fanart on dA depicts her as evil-looking, so I wanted something else - hence what you see here is a subdued, saddened Maple that perhaps is experiencing a brief flash of lucidity? Just a thought. u.u

Awesome version! very inspiring. I got myself somehow making 12 cats for a fan page on Facebook. Today is, you guessed it, the day I'm making Mapleshade.
Would it be okay to reference this time to time? I do make my drawings from scratch, but still wanted to make sure I have your permission since you seem to have a crediting problem going on.

Of course, go ahead, I'm always up for lending out my designs as reference, it is the highest honour~ And yes I have had a small problem with credits, but not in my designs being used for reference behind my back, but rather my pictures in their entirety being used without my knowledge, so you needn't worry on that account, but thanks either way!

hospital, because she killed her mom and her dad. She got so bad she went to kill all the

Oh...I thought she was a Maine coon because on this little show I watch there was a tortie that made me think Mapleshade. Big, fluffy, and her face was primarily dark and kind of had that shady look...

Well, if you study her face closely you'll see that Maple's ears are too small and triangular, and her nose ridge too sloped for her to qualify as a Maine Coon - not to mention her lack of a giant, unseemly muzzle hehe. (I've never been fond of the Maine's big, rough-cut face)

can you do crookedstar or oakheart maybe? because for some reason both of their parents are grey...yet oakheart and crookedstar are brown?? (I need help with the genetics for these two)

And yeah I know, the whole "two grey parents equals two brown sons" makes no sense whatsoever. But I've been trying to fix that. The trick is the cinnamon gene - it's a lovely ruddy-brown type of colour, and it's recessive to normal black/blue. Meaning that if Rainflower and Shellheart carried that gene, both their sons could be cinnamon coloured instead.
Of course, the remaining problem then is that Oakheart is darkly coloured, while his parents are dilute; technically Oak ought to be dilute too, but I figured that'd be boring - and I prefer his design much more than his parents lol. So make either of his parents black rather than blue, and you've got a working family line for 'em.

It isn't very easy to draw a non-evil cat with a massive, scarred head, a broad face, ragged, scarred, patched, matted fur, and sharp, yellow teeth, but you have done it! She has a million evil physical traits, but she was a nice cat who broke the code with Appledusk and placed her paws on the path to the Dark Forest.

OMG I agree completely about her being the only villain I liked. Scourge's story was cliche as anything, Brokenstar's was kinda understandable and I liked his degree of evil, but he did go too far for what happened in his past. I kind of liked Tigerstar after Tigerclaw's Fury (Mostly because we saw him show genuine concern for Goldenflower and his kits during the fire...) but it was too little too late for him too. Thistleclaw annoyed every fiber of my being. Hawkfrost had no real reason to be evil... and yeah. XD

I think this is the most beautiful (and unsettling) Mapleshade design I've ever seen. That black is just SO black, my God. It's like parts of her pelt are swallowed up by void. |D

So you're saying tortoiseshells can't have pure, white tails? I have always seen Mapleshade with a white tail. But now that I think about it, I have never seen a tortoiseshell with a pure, white tail. Maybe a little bit of white under the bottom of it, but not.. solid.

Well first of all, your internal monologue there kinda cleared up why already, but I'll try to explain a bit; the last places white spotting reach, are the ears, the top of the head, and the cat's tail. They rarely, if ever, turn white before the rest of the body because of how the gene works. ^^

I always love tortoises of this kind of design. I think Mapleshade has the best unique design I've ever seen on a cat, especially in this picture! ^^ The first physical book copy I've read about a specific cat is Mapleshade's Vengeance. And it was pretty dark, but interesting for I kinda prefer dark stories, though I do have my specific restrictions to my preference!

I think so too. I read the printed version of it which came with Goosefeather's Curse and Ravenpaw's Farewell. I had problems with motivating myself to read the last story, but the first two, MV and GC, were interesting for me to read.

Oh wow, she looks absolutely gorgeous!! I've never really had much of an opinion on Mapleshade really, I couldn't bring myself to read her novella, but I'll admit that she's always intrigued me! And gosh, your design for her is just glorious! I love how you haven't depicted her with an evil grin or smirk, I really pity her. From what I've read about the novella, her life was hardly easy.
Gosh, I probably say this all the time, but I absolutely adore how you do torties! The markings are so soft and realistic! I really aspire to be able to paint torties as well as you do- well, I aspire to be an artist as good as you in general, but if I could at least master tortoiseshell pelts then I'd be delighted. xD I just need to practise more I guess!

Thank you very much! I'm happy people like I did the alternative, non-mean looking Mapleshade haha~ Yah, her novella wasn't 'good' reading per se, but you did finally understand where her sentiments and madness came from, which was fine by me.
And thanks again! I mean really, torties are about the hardest thing for me to do - well, calicos are just a BIT easier - but really meshing colours and brindling oh man. xD Makes me even happier when I hear you like them~ QwQ
