Description Finally we've arrived at the finish line of this round of requested purebred kitties!! It's been too long, partly because duty called and school's a bitch, but I hope to launch a new warrior request journal in a few days, if only to prepare myself for the next cats~ Stay tuned, and watch out for my journal updates so you get a chance at getting a cat you want, drawn.

Now, onto the character design this time around. Mothwing was... tricky, to say the least. "Triangle-faced, sleek, dappled, dark golden blah blah blah" - what does that mean, Erins? A golden shaded? An amber tabby? No?
In the end, I researched black tabbies, until I found one which had a... lighter undercoat, which a few areas tinted almost orange. It might not follow canon, but it makes Mothwing solidly genetically possible. As the daughter of a black tabby tom and a black colourpoint female, this works seamlessly~ (And she still looks moth-like to me xD) This I did partly because making her amber would be... a bit 'too' farfetched, if Sasha did turn out a purebred cat of Oriental lineage (where none should by default carry amber, since it's restricted to the Norwegian forest cat alone)

If anything, what I tried to keep, was her "striking tabby stripes" by giving her thinner striping than the average longhaired kitty - and her breed should be obvious enough; she takes after her daddy, and is a Norwegian Forest Cat herself~ And finally amber eyes stay amber eyes.Β

(Currently she might actually be the cat most similar to Tigerstar, omg haha xD)

As for her character... I LOVE HER. LOTS! Mothwing is awesome - that she's an atheist inhabiting the one position in a clan where faith ought to be most important, was a stroke of genius. We need more non-believing cats, really~ Starclan is so boring, ugh. (This coming from a non-believer herself, I'm kinda biased, but meh~)

I'll admit, in the beginning she annoyed me. But in retrospect, I think that came from the fact that Mothwing was most often a theme in Leafpool's POV - and she naturally annoyed me, so I'm inclined to say that my initial dislike of Mothy was Leafy's fault. xD

EDIT: Watermarked because I am goddamn tired of finding these all over the internet without so much as a puny link back to me.

Go see AnnMy’s purebreed Brambleclaw design, Mothwing looks more like evil dad then Bramble with the genetics

But it's HER design, which means it isn't canon. In the books, Bramblestar looks like Tigerstar.

Yeah, I know... I just meant that this version of her looks a lot like her dad. And I know Brambleclaw looks like Tigerstar in the books.

StarTheWolfPuppy [2016-11-20 22:28:08 +0000 UTC]

I love Mothwing, but my only problem with her is that, following The Last Hope- there is no reason for her not to believe in Starclan anymore, but it's been shown that she still doesn't.

Before The Last Hope, her lack of faith made sense- she's had no proof, she didn't really care to look into it anymore, she got on fine without it. But what was she doing during the battle in The Last Hope? Was she just watching all the other clans clawing at air and just dropping dead or something?Β

I really don't like how involved Starclan are at this point- there's no reason for anybody, in book or out, to be sad when a character dies- chances are they'll pop up again in the next chapter or two. In the first few books, from what I can recall (it's been a LONG time) other than very vague visions, Starclan never really made a face-to-face appearance, or at least it was VERY rare. There was a genuine contemplation as a reader over whether or not Starclan was real and that mystery and sort of openness of it made Starclan seem a lot more exciting in concept. Now dead cats take up every prologue and you could probably make up a seperate book for times when a Yellowfang or Bluestar alone pop up to throw a hissy fit over something.Β

KittyStorage In reply to StarTheWolfPuppy [2016-12-01 13:46:16 +0000 UTC]

Of course, that no longer makes any sense since StarClan decided to prance around and walk the earth again for an entire evening, lame though it was. What I DO however, like about Mothwing still not being a believer, is that it presents a contrast to the fanatic devotion so many other characters show to this... gathering of stupid ancestors.Β

Honestly, before, I would've given Starclan more leeway, but with how very... non-mystical, meddlesome, careless, unfeeling, and cruel they've been portrayed over the last twelve books and so, I don't like them. Like you say, there's no mystery remaining, and what with all the ghost visits you get the feel they don't really care so much for their descendants beyond being able to do with them as they like, and throwing fits of course. Which makes me appreciate Mothwing all the more, because even after having all the evidence of their being real shoved in her face, she still doesn't believe 'in' them.

And we need that counterweight in the story. Mothwing became one of the most competent healers in the Clans' history not because she consulted with Starclan at every turn, but because she used her own head. She now knows Starclan is real, but to me it seems she has yet to see any reason why she should discard her own sense of logic because of what some ancestors she doesn't even know, decrees. I dig that. xD

She's so pretty! I like this better than the "canon" design for her. She actually seems like she could be related to Tigerstar.

While I respect other people's beliefs, or lack thereof, I still don't understand how in The Apprentice's Quest it's implied that Mothwing STILL doesn't believe in StarClan... after StarClan and Dark Forest cats literally had this giant battle that killed a bunch of cats and directly affected every Clan cat alive at the time. Like... Mothwing... how... how could anyone not believe after that?

Oh that's like the best thing I could hear, thank you so much! I'm secretly so pleased whenever people lean towards my renditions rather than canon hehe~ uvu

Honestly, I see your problem. Had StarClan remained this "obscure" religion, with no solid proof of them, I'd have understood Mothy's atheism following the Last Hope too - the idea that she and Cloudtail both still sorta can't believe in them, even after fighting alongside these dead fellas, is stretching it. On the other hand, I really appreciate both these characters for their non-believing status (mostly because I abhor StarClan due to them generally being useless jerks in the stories) so I'm happy she's not gone all Willowshine and just being so far gone in believing everything is as StarClan wills it even when it's not. Though I'd have preferred it to be termed more like "okay so Mothwing now know StarClan EXISTS, but that doesn't mean she'll accept their word as law." If that makes any sense at all. ^^'

Haha, I love your designs for most cats, especially Mothwing, Hollyleaf, Scourge, Leafpool, and Squirrelflight. And if it weren't for you I'd know nothing about cat genetics. Now I tend to think about it when I create characters

Yeah, it makes sense, I get what you mean. Realistically, she should at least believe that StarClan exists, but she doesn't have to all out worship them like other cats. It's stretching it a lot to say that they don't believe after their Clanmates were literally murdered by Dark Forest cats and StarClan literally defended from heaven to help fight them.

She's like.. A prettier version of how I imagined her..
I love the way that you actually do your research on cat coat generics, unlike the Erins themselves at times.
I just.. I love it! Especially the tail, for some reason. She has a very pretty tail. Can a tail be pretty?
And, Oh my Near, I LOVE Mothwing! She's my favourite she-cat, and in my mind, is second only to Ravenpaw. She's just seems really independent after she first becomes a medicine cat, and the way that she can take on the role of a medicine cat without belief in StarClan is just..

KittyStorage In reply to KalahariMeerkatfan [2016-02-04 16:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, first of all I just look up the sort of colour coat I'm after - in this case I just typed in black mackerel tabby - and then I sorted through millions of picture hits until I found one with a rather golden-ish hint to it... believe me, it's tiresome. xD Glad I could help my dear~

YouBlue [2016-01-14 16:31:41 +0000 UTC]

I've alway imagined her more like this rather then golden, since, ya know, moths aren't really...golden.
Anyways, I have a question about eye color genetics; Could two cats, one with yellow eyes and the other with amber eyes, produce a kit with green eyes?

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

KittyStorage In reply to YouBlue [2016-02-04 16:15:49 +0000 UTC]

Good point, really, I've never thought about that but as you say, moths are, like... more brownish or grey. xD
Hmm, I'm not really an expert on cat eyes - they're not 'inherited' per se, because eye colour is closely tied with the intensity of the cat's coat colour, like, black cats are more often yellow-eyed because their coats are as dark and saturated as can be. So I can't really say, but I wouldn't figure it would be completely impossible, no. ^^

I love this design! Mothwing... eh, always felt neutral on her. I felt neutral on everyone, though - the writing got so bland around her time.Β
And yes, I do like how they made Mothwing a non-believer. The Erins screwed up StarClan and made them less like all-knowing, mysterious, capital-G God, and more like the Greek gods, don't you think?Β

KittyStorage In reply to fadedworlds [2016-02-04 16:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Yeah, the beginning of the real downfall started somewhere in the middle of the second series...Β
Yeah, you're kinda right - from being the supportive "okay we're not really going to step in and mix with the living we're supposed to be good supporters on the sidelines" they suddenly went all Zeus and co. on the cats, just "let's make this cat do this and that because we want this outcome, 'kay?" Ugh... As the series progressed, Starclan became increasingly selfish, which is disgusting coming from long-dead cats...

AstarGoldenwing [2016-01-10 12:45:43 +0000 UTC]

That was a bit unexpected interpretation, as I always imagined her to be sleek and elegant, but I think that's because in my head she takes after Sasha, both in build and color (whom I imagine to be cream colorpoint), but I agree that with your interpretation of Sasha Mothwing had no choice but to take after Tigerstar more. Just look at all that fluff!

Speaking about the character itself, I adore Mothwing. I think that her non-believer status allows her to see things more clearly - like when StarClan told the medicine cats to stop communicating in the fourth arc, she was the only one who saw how stupid that was and who insisted that their duty was to all sick and wounded, not just their Clans. Moreover, I think that there is more to her character than her non-believing. I love her devotion to what is right, her loyalty, bravery, common sense and overall sweet temperament. She is my favourite of all Tigerstar's kits, though Brambleclaw is second close.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

KittyStorage In reply to AstarGoldenwing [2016-02-04 16:11:07 +0000 UTC]

Aye, I had to sorta choose between parts of her description that really didn't mesh too well, haha. I could've gone for the angular and sleek part, but the fluff won out in the end, darnit~ That and through rendering of the family's genetics, of course.Β

Exactly, that's what I've been thinking too. Where other, believing cats much easier gives up because "Starclan said so", Mothwing doesn't share the same 'confidence' in that and rather goes out of her way to work as hard for her patients as possible - she focuses on the 'now' more than others, and she's just adorable for that, yeah. I think she's my second fave Tigerstar child, right behind Tawnypelt~

Bountybreeder [2016-01-10 01:31:56 +0000 UTC]

I love Mothwing and your interpretation of her, as per, realistic to the finest fur strand-which I have a fetish for (I hate when characters are not realistic, but to me it's too much effort and I haven't the mind to have anyone say "Noo! That's not their design!" to me. So 'canon' design I will draw :3 )
As QueerWarriorCats put it, she may just be the 'Gayest of gays' and that's coming from me! XD
I totally ship Mothpool! :3
Her atheist character was kinda cool... Then we read Mistystars omen where she *spoilers* totally flipped out on Mothwing and made her retire to be an elder! I was just like "wtf (frick) Erin?!" I thought Misty would be really chilled with that. XD
Nope!
Coming from an atheist also, yes. I love thatΒ  Purdy, Cloudtail and Mothwing do not believe in Starclan.
But then there is the Last Hope which people argue 'should have MADE them believe in Starclan'
You can't MAKE people believe in something!!
