Description
Right, then we're halfway through our round of purebreedified (listen to my wonderful selfmade word xD) pretties~And lo and behold, have my alterated Scourge. For he isn't much like himself, is he?
The canon Scourge is not the worst among the cats when it comes to genetic faults, but there were certain things that had to go. First of all, his one white paw; similar to Squirrelflight, he can not have it either, as none of his parents display any white spotting, and it is something that should he have had it, would've been more symmetrical. Secondly, it was his eyes; blue. By default, a coloured cat cannot have blue eyes, which are colour'less' - see what I'm getting at?
That does not mean there are not exceptions. There is the Ojos Azules mutation. And there are rare instances where cats are born with blue eyes, caused by genes not working properly and activating colour enzymes in the eyes. But the underline; it's RARE. And I will not use that wantonly when this series' aim is for realism.
The fandom often implies that Scourge's white paw is the symbol of his brotherhood to Firestar. I personally find that rather silly. So in order to retain a sense of familiarity between them, one that is actually more obvious, I made Scourge an Abyssinian as well, inherited from their common father. And as the icing to the cake, his eyes are now identical to those of his half brother. If that doesn't speak of brotherly familiarity, nothing does. (The scars I put on him I suppose come from Tigerstar roughing him up. Considering the gravity of the assault it felt more natural this way~)
Lastly, you find no collar propped with teeth, or any claw enhancers either (anyone explain to me how that weird stuff worked?) because the focus of my series are their physical designs. Petty trinkets and housecat collars? I couldn't care less.

EDIT: Watermarked because I am goddamn tired of finding these all over the internet without so much as a puny link back to me.

Thank you very much. Yeah I never liked the collar, and I liked the fanciful dog teeth n stuff even less. A character can still be intimidating without the need for sparklewear haha. :')
Yes, thank you, I know very well how white spotting works. I fail to see how I've applied it wrongly here. My point is that Scourge's canon white spotting remains highly unrealistic, because white spotting most often has some sort of symmetry to it - had there been more white on Scourge, say his chest, another paw or two, etc. then we could talk about keeping it - but a single paw? It's too singular, the chances of it happening just aren't there. Coupled with the complete lack of white spotting in his family, I decided in my interpretation to throw it all out the window~
Uuh... y'know, I am actually one of those brown-eyed kids born from blue- and green-eyed parents. I know the accusations very well. But that still doesn't have anything to do with Scourge's scenario, because eye colours in humans vs. eye colours in cats are very different. With the exception of white fur genes/albinism/rare mutations with or without hereditary possibilities, cats just don't get blue eyes. ^^

Fun fact: scourge could have blue eyes by also another way which is having something like an odd eye which means he would have two coloured eyes he would have brown eye and blue which is the most common.
www.google.co.uk/search?q=blac… :
But this still would made him completly black and it is VERY RARE especially in black cats.
And also about the collar the whole teeth and claw thing sounds impossible but I wouldn't mind of scourge had his collar sharred alittle bit so it was cuts and holes in it. (PS I don't care about his collar since it is diffrent in each country and who really cares right? it's art. I personally love the look of the russian version on the darkest hour cover.)
Also it was always weird to me why didn't scourge had any scars if he was attacked by tiger star OF COURSE he would has some cuts.

Squid-Kitties [2017-01-04 00:58:28 +0000 UTC]
My issue with the collar is that it would be terribly embedded and causing all sorts of problems. It was put on him when he was a kit probably tighter than usual since he was the runt. There's no way a grown cat can wear a kit's collar all the way into adulthood without running into some troubles.
As far as single white paws go, I've pictured him with minimal white spotting because I'm not too fond of so many solid black cats with hazel or amber eyes. One could get confused.

KittyStorage In reply to Squid-Kitties [2017-03-10 13:48:44 +0000 UTC]
Aye, that's a good point. Not even the most elastic of collars would be big enough for him to grow from months-old to fully grown, unfixed tom. No chance.
And that's not a bad idea, considering how identical a lot of solid blacks with hazel/yellows eyes could be, it would be hard NOT to get confused haha.

Never understood that idea of him being Firestar's half-brother (did I spell it right?). I mean does it make any special sense? Did it play any role in the plot? No, it didn't. It just came out of nowhere and didn't change anything (and I just hate this "OMG, Scourge has one white paw and Squirrelflight has one white paw, it's a SYMBOL!1 of their relative").
And one thing about his collar. How people react to a cat in collar with dog's fangs? He lived in city, for God's sake! People should have noticed that! Did no one ever tried to remove this strange collar? No one? Seriously, Erins?
Now let's look on your picture! I love it. I love how you made him small, almost tiny cat with short legs and not brutal giant cat-boss with long legs. I say it because many people imagine him as that cat-boss and it always drives me crazy. And I like that you made him black with no white on his fur and changed his eyes into green. It looks more realistic and attractive than his canon counterpart and I just love it!
Thank you for this art and forgive me for my mistakes :3

Harborr In reply to LuckyFunnyGirl [2016-12-17 16:03:42 +0000 UTC]
It was never an 'idea' that they were half brothers, it was subtly canon.
His collar was, to my knowledge, studded only with the dog tooth he had found lying on the ground (have you read his manga?). The rest of his adornments were stated to be cat's claws and some cat's teeth, which is why I 99.99/100 times find myself disliking portrayals of Scourge's collar (and portrayals of Scourge in general, people are edgy). He kept to alleys and I'm sure from a distance it just looked like a studded housecat collar. Plus, I'm sure, any Twoleg attempting to mess with Scourge was left with a nasty reminder of the encounter, and why not to try doing that again.
I do agree with your dislike of his common fan portrayal. He definitely isn't a buff "cat-boss" and definitely doesn't have long legs. His first name was Tiny for a reason.

LuckyFunnyGirl In reply to Harborr [2016-12-20 06:33:43 +0000 UTC]
I know it's canon but I just don't see any sence in it. Just why? Erins needed more drama (who doesn't work because Scourge and Firestar just didn't know that they were brothers)?
This is actually a good explanation why people don't react to collar. I've never thought about that. Maybe because in Russia house cats just don't wear collars and I don't know how can they look like
I have read the manga. I don't like it. Erins trying to make us feel sorry for Scourge (as I understand) but I saw a story about weak character who surrendered and became killer because it's easeir. I don't blame Scourge for that (it's the most realistic end for that story actually) but that story didn't make me love him or feel sorry for him. I still don't care about him.
Thank you for the answer! And forgive me for my mistakes again

Harborr In reply to LuckyFunnyGirl [2016-12-21 21:11:24 +0000 UTC]
Personally I appreciate the way they did it: It didn't need to be integrated into the plot, that'd be silly in my opinion. Considering how it was approached, it seemed that the detail was more of a treat for readers than for anything, and it certainly didn't add any drama into the story, except for fan-made drama!
Ah you live in Russia? Have you seen the youtube channel Robin Seplut? He is from russia and records a bunch of awesome looking feral cats, one in particular that I like is a white cat with a black diamond-shaped marking on its muzzle above its nose, they all remind me of warriors!
I completely get that, Scourge isn't one of my favorite characters, however I do appreciate him and I like how they introduced him and the role that he played, though it is short lived (which is probably for the better). I definitely don't love or feel sorry for him either, I was rooting for him getting revenge on Tigerstar though, what a fitting end to his life!

Thank you very much! ;w;
Well, the problem with such an idea is that overgrown claws isn't really a health issue on its own from what I know, but an effect of illness and/or the aging process. Cats will, by instinct, sharpen their claws to remove the outer layers, because letting them grow too long will be a hassle for them in their everyday life. The only instances where cats don't do this, is either because... well, they're dumb lol, or they're so old it's getting difficult for them to sharpen them, what with stiff joints and old tendons working against them. And a few illnesses too, which makes the claws grow to unnaturally big sizes.
So I'd say the whole claws deal with Scourge is pretty difficult to deal with, really - unless you decide to give him diabetes lol. xD

My question is: If Scourge in his childhood time, did Tigerpaw broke his collar or else? Because I read ''you find no collar propped on teeth'' and Cats don't know how to put teeth on their collar.

Indeed, if you decide Quince could fall into the Ojos breed, then Scourge retaining his blue eyes wouldn't be impossible. (As for her canon eye colour honestly I don't remember if she got a design for eyes at all )

Shadow-Chu In reply to Cupcakearecool [2016-07-23 17:48:31 +0000 UTC]
She's going by canon, where Quince was without white markings.
In your interpretation, with a white-spotted Quince, Scourge could certainly have inherited her gene for white-spotting, but it's liable to be more symmetrical than just a single white paw. The hindpaws are also generally the first to show white, before the forepaws, just for the way white-spotting spreads. So a minimally white-spotted Scourge would probably look something like cdn.westportnow.com/ee/images/…

Oh dear you can not imagine how much I like this version better, I always thought Scourges "canon" design was a bit off. A pure black cat, that makes a classic villain, but just one thing that is just a personal perspective, I would have kept his eyes blue because to me it seems "trademark" to him but the white paw stretched the limits. All in all I love this version much better.

Well this is kind of a leap into the dark but wouldn't he be gray since his mother was gray? That would mean she carried the dilute gene with her, yes? Or would Jake not having a dilute gene kind of cancel it out and allow for black?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KittyStorage In reply to Quill-Works [2016-04-26 11:06:17 +0000 UTC]
Precisely; that Jake is non-dilute means Scourge has a chance of being black instead, because the dilute gene is recessive towards full colour~
👍: 0 ⏩: 0
Quill-Works [2016-04-18 01:57:35 +0000 UTC]
So does a cat have to be fully white to have blue eyes (cause wouldn't that make them deaf?) or could it appear as a homozygous recessive in a cat with only some color?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KittyStorage In reply to Quill-Works [2016-04-18 10:29:07 +0000 UTC]
No, not necessarily fully white; generally a cat needs white spotting reaching onto its face to become blue-eyed (because the colour in the eyes are deactivated by it) though of course there are alternative cases where you have a less white cat with blue eyes, or just no white at all though that is extremely rare. Eye colour however does not behave like fur colour genes in the same way as dominant vs. recessive (of course there are certain rules, but mostly eye colour are decided by several genes inherited as combinations, blue eyes aside)
As for the deaf part, that's a very common misconception. First of all, the famous deaf white cats aren't white spotted, but dominant white (a whole other white gene which is more dominant than white spotting, and has the same expression even when heterozygous) though of course cats can be deaf in other ways too but that's beside the point. And more than that, it's not always the blue eyes which makes them deaf - just as many green-, yellow- and amber-coloured white cats can be deaf really. Though of course then you also have odd-eyed cats, where the blue-eyed side most often is the deaf one if any side is. ^^

i dont know if you were still wondering, but I heard that the claw enhancers were made by hollowing out the insides so that it can forcefully be stuck/fit into the claw skin, like right over and above where the claws naturally are. i don't know how it was hollowed out, but thats what i heard

First: Great job, I just love this kitty!
I know what you mean, black fur, blue eyes and one single white paw looks a bit silly because it´s so unrealistic. It doesn´t look much like Scourge anymore, but whatever XD
I agree with Streamwhisker, he looks much more evil without his white paw (and blue eyes), and I like that you added scars. I think they never mentioned some and that´s weird since... he REALLY fights a lot XD
The green eyes also fit a black cat better (in my opinion) and he looks much more related to Firestar the way you made him.
