I like how this page turned out. It's one of the few that I've made the scenery entirely without reference images. Plus it's all ominous and doom-laden, which are always my favorite pages
It was always my intent that Rarity be the one who originally designed the Nightmare Moon (based on the totally pointless movie development of the Death Star being originally a Geonosian design), which is why she eventually ends up wired into its targeting system . So I've been building to this image for a very long time. Rarity may be best pony, but she's never been a paragon in this story.
Luna has a tragic backstory about a lost apprentice which I thought I'd explained some time ago in one of the notes, but a search turns up nothing so I guess I haven't actually explained it anywhere that anyone can see it. I have mentioned the Umbrum Wars before, approximately 750 years before the current present day, in which the Umbrum tricked a princess into releasing them from their extradimensional prison, corrupted her into an overlord of darkness, and through her went on a rampage that almost consumed the galaxy. That princess had been Luna's apprentice, and is the one who both killed Fluttershy and took Rainbow Dash's wing. Since then, Luna's role in the education of potential alicorns has been self-limited to teaching younglings the basics of magic.
The hardest part of this page was the Huntress' hair. My old model only had it flipped the other way, so I had to redraw it as best I could without a reference. I probably could have found a shot of Flutterbat with her hair flip on this side if I'd gone digging through the actual episode, but I don't really like doing that if I can avoid it. I should point out that the creepy, angry, occasionally murderous Fluttershy that we've seen so far in this series has been her without a little voice in her head telling her to do bad things. The times, as they say, are a-changing...

Well, not all of it. I'm currently away from my notes and refuse to use somebody else's Aurebesh translation table, but I know enough off the top of my head to read what she's calling it.

I'm reminded of R2/Pete describing what he would do, and it being both what the real bad guy did, as well as what someone that wanted to hide being a horrible mastermind would do.

750 years? Luna feels so guilty since all this time? she has so little faith in her? she reminds me a little of Dumbledore: so frightened by the harm she could do by being close to power, so insecure to be able to fight against her own darkness.

The irony here being, of course, that she's completely misinterpreted everything, and the Nightmare Force has never had any serious interest in reclaiming her. As with the dreamscape episode, it's all in her head.

Probably, though not necessarily any better. If she'd been confident enough to take the throne and hold it, Pinkie Pie wouldn't be flaking out and letting competing special interests run the senate. But at the same time, the Nightsisters would still be acting as the Nightmare Force's agents provocateurs, and they're quite good at what they do, so things would still have swung their way eventually.

Pretty much standard for mentor figures. They don't trust themselves with power so they nominate some clueless schmuck to be the Chosen One.

It seems like the brief coming together of the Elements of Harmony, instead of reminding them of everything they had when they were still friends, is sending them towards their downfalls. (Those of them who haven't had one already, that is.)

Just Fluttershy, actually (for daring to hold out hope). Bearing in mind that for all Rarity's moral ambiguity, she's the only white star left on Twilight's cutie mark by the end. And Pinkie Pie and Skywishes' turns will be a bit more sudden and dramatic, but Fluttershy's is going to be a slow burn.
