Thanks! In fact, I painted this over a would-be rain experiment (that is, a painting I meant to place outside in the rain but then the rain stopped while I was still painting it), that's where the textures come from. You once asked how I paint those thin lines. Well, I take a hair from my hairbrush, and run it through a dab of paint until the hair is coated in paint, then I draw it over the paper, or create different shapes with it. In any case, it creates a great effect, but you need to have pretty long hair in order for it to work. A piece of thin thread or yarn might work, as well. I haven't tried.

My first thought was a large cut down tree,
then I thought of an eye up close..
then other associations came but the tree and eye image keep lingering..

Did you also made the straight lines in this one with a hair? I wouldn't have guessed how you made the thin lines, I thought of a fountainpen perhaps.. I guess a hair would work better than thread, that might soak up the paint..

Yes, I can see both the cut surface of a tree and the eye up close.

I made the straight lines with a hair in this one, as well. It was a bit more difficult to make them straight than making the squiggly lines, but not too difficult. I actually tried to use a thread but it wasn't as flexible as a hair, and it didn't work nearly as well.

did you have any of those associations yourself before I mentioned them? or something very different..

I was thinking fishing line would perhaps work better than a thread but I still guess a hair would work best..
I've not had the chance to try the technique out..

I didn't actually have any associations to begin with. I often don't have them when it comes to my paintings.

I suddenly saw the word fishing line in a totally new light. It could well be a useful tool to fish a painting like this. One thing I've found out is that the hair needs to be quite long.
