Description
Instagram | TumblrSome sketches exploring my interpretation of Artax and Atreyu from The Neverending Story. I like the idea of Artax being some sort of dun, though I kind of want to make him lighter than he is here. I based him on the Russian Vyatka.
* Artax belongs to a race of sentient horses. They generally look primitive and wild, having developed alongside humans without the interference of artificial breeding.
* Compact and strong, they are more agile and hardy than typical horses.
* Artax and Atreyu have grown up together as brothers. Atreyu learned to ride before he could walk and they move like a single creature.
* Atreyu leads as the “older brother” but never coerces Artax into doing anything against his will.

This makes Artax's death even more sad ;__; To lose someone that is more than your best friend, your brother, how traumatic.

It might be too much, but I'm a sucker for feelings. *ahem* But I think there would be an opportunity to resurrect him in the second half of the story, too.

That would restore my broken heart!! I think Artax's death scarred one too many childhoods!

Beautiful, dynamic design.
I really like how you engineered such an expressive face in the horse character without compromising his realistic proportions and styling, and I love how fluid and organic the poses you chose turned out.
Very impressive.

Thank you very much! I've been sketching a ton of horses from reference and watching endless videos and I think it's helped a lot in giving me freedom to make up poses and angles. It was really fun to focus on the gesture and line of action for these.

You're very welcome!
Horses are pretty much The Most Difficult animals to draw, with they're crazy legs and oddly proportioned joints, but once you get them down, a whole WORLD of opportunity opens up in drawing other ungulates.
I know it was literally the hardest thing I ever learned to draw, and I was so proud of myself once I finally figured it out.
