Description well hope u enjoy!! there is NO wrong or right way to color on photoshop ^^ this is just showing the steps i take for coloring

I didnt say excatly how i did it because i want whoever uses this to experiment themselves and find out their own style rather then learning and copying other styles ^^

so i hope this clears some of the steps up on how i color digitally and i will be making a tutorial similar to this on how i make eyes ^^

have fun!

the comment below this explains #6.
#7 is adding shadow in with darker parts
#8 is adding the lighting in where light is hitting the character.

how to do the blend cell shading ??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KLHart-Creations In reply to Areia13 [2013-01-03 17:30:46 +0000 UTC]

take soft brush with a low opacity of the same color as the shadow and sweep over the lines to make it look less sharp and more blended from light to dark

what program are you using?

If some sort of photoshop where there are layers you want to have the Line-art layer on the VERY top of all the layers listed, and then the coloring layers all have to be underneath that top layer so that the colors stay behind the lines instead of over them and all around

This is lovely, but the thing is, I'm really struggling to learn Photoshop cause most tutorials just show you pictures and expect you to know how to get from stage to stage - I can't figure out the steps between. Do I need a certain opacity? Certain brushes? It's stuff like that. I just don't know what to do.

most artist tend to just show the tutorial on how they do their style to show the process, but leave it up for the person looking at the tutorial to figure it out for themselves otherwise there would a lot of the same techniques out there and art would lose its originality if it was shown EXACTLY how the artist does it.

I made mine straight forward nothing special, I just scanned in my sketch, and then outlined it freehandedly (yes I just made up my own word haha) and then just base in the block colors. for the "blending cell shading step" I would have taken the soft brush and put the opacity on 50% or less to get the gradient effect thats all other then that it is all hard brushed for the lines, the base color and shading. as for layers, its all exactly how you see it 1st layer is the sketch, ten add a new layer, thats the line art, then for coloring, add another layer but put it under the lineart layer and that will keep the lines on top and you wont be coloring over it as long as the "Lineart layer" is on the very top of the layer list, you should be fine with coloring it like a coloring book

Very long I know, but I hope it helps you a little more

Fair enough then, I just wanted you to know cause I often get frustrated by ambiguous tutorials as a new Photoshop user and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

haha I dont blame you Im in the same boat for some relistic tutorials haha Its all pretty much figuring out your own style so your not completely copying the style of the other artist thats all but I wish you luck and just keep paracticing!!

Great! But one thing...How do you get your lineart so....smooth? There are no tutorials on that, and I'm always stuck using the shaky brush tool.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

KLHart-Creations In reply to DC-san [2011-07-15 14:39:15 +0000 UTC]

what do you mean by shaky brush tool? for me I use a pen tablet, and free hand the lines, and believe me it takes me a few times going over and erasing to get them to not do quirky things other people use marqui(sp?) tools and I just think that takes tooooooooooooooooooo much time and effort so I free hand them. But Im willing to help you out if you want I normally use the hard brush setting size 5 and zoom in when I do it, then go back in and use the eraser to taper off the edges that look round for the end of lines if that makes sense

Oooh, that's a good way to do it. Thanks! I finally installed the tablet software on my computer, and it lets my use pressure sensitivity and it helps a lot. Happy drawing! ^^

Thanks! This really helped me. but one thing, How would I do cell schading, iv'e seen it around and havent really known how to do it, could you explain?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KLHart-Creations In reply to PaintedPeaches [2011-06-18 16:04:54 +0000 UTC]

anytime! and cell shading is in step 5 its basically taking the color that you want to use to shade the charaCTER to give it more of a 3d effect this step differenciates where the light is hitting the character and the parts that are in shade from the light if that makes sense.

One question...how do you make your outline look so neat and clean? When I try going over mine, it looks shaky and messy. How do you get your lines so smooth-looking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KLHart-Creations In reply to tibetador [2010-06-19 18:01:19 +0000 UTC]

haha for one thing, I have a tablet, so its easier to draw curves if you have a steady hand in general. but believe me it isnt easy for me either haha I usually have the pressure on so that I can taper lines off into a point, OR put alot of pressure to make the line fatter x.x still takes alot of time to do, just need patience is all then going back and retouching what u think could be neater hope that helps

I have one question

What is CELL SHADING?????

I keep hearing this in tutorials but I can't figure it out, unless it's not from Photoshop.......

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KLHart-Creations In reply to vethra-ixen [2008-11-24 23:32:12 +0000 UTC]

haha Well, in step 5 thats the example of it ^^ lol its just flat shading that makes the picture look more 3D-ish and shows where lighting hits like for this tutorial, it shows were the light hits the wolf and shows the flow of the fur mor eto give it character rather then having it look like step 4 with the flat colors
hope that helps im bad at explaining things
