Description
The 20 July Plot was a conspiracy to overthrow Hitler's Nazi regime on 20 July 1944.
Henning von Tresckow, an officer in the German military, organized the attempted coup. To explain his reasoning he cited the Bible, stating "God promised Abraham that He would not destroy Sodom if just ten righteous men could be found in the city, and so I hope that for our sake God will not destroy Germany." The plot failed when a bomb meant to kill Hitler only wounded him.
One of the plotters was Josef Wirmer, who designed a flag to be used in the event that the plot succeeded. It was based on the Nordic Cross flags of Scandinavian nations and utilized the colours of the Wiemar Republic's flag, red, gold, and black. It was proposed as the national flag by conservative elements within the government of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). It lost out to the Wiemar flag (modern day German flag) in the end.

In the east there was an organization called the National Committee for a Free Germany, an anti-Nazi German organization that operated out of the Soviet Union during the war. NCFG used the German Imperial black/white/red tricolour as its emblem. As such this flag was going to be used as the flag of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). When the FRG chose to adopt the Wiemar flag, however, the GDR did as well, as a sign of continuity between the two Germanys (of course the GDR added a communist emblem).

So here's a thought. Lets say the Federal Republic of Germany adopted the 20 July Plot's flag. That would have left the German Democratic Republic free to use the black/white/red tricolour flag, as originally intended. So this is just a "what if?" comparison.
The FRG flag is just the flag used by the 20 July Plot. The GDR flag is the Imperial German flag, with a modified East German communist emblem.
