Description

Black hair is a pain for me to do, but hopefully I managed to do Blake's justice anyway. This is another full-body practice for me, though the loose boots and her weapon made things a little harder to figure out than I hoped. This is another case where I limited myself to a specific size, though, in another attempt to figure out what details were necessary and which ones could be sacrificed. The shading and highlighting are probably more minimal than they should be, but at the same time, I'm just hoping the proportions and positioning look good.

I realize that she looks a bit older than she is on the show. This isn't an attempt to write a fanfiction future or anything -- I just wanted to give her (and Yang, previously) a slightly more realistic yet still comic book style appearance. I did want to make her look a little more ripped, but I couldn't get the shading to look quite right.

Anyhow, any comments, tips, or critiques are more than welcome and appreciated!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

Does she have human ears under her hair? Are the cat's ears real or are they just part of an accessory.

Anyway, not familiar with the character but nice work.

Thank you!

Actually, I think she does have human ears under her hair, as well as the cat ears being real, too. It might just have been a limitation of the animation early in the life of the show (RWBY), where maybe the models they used had to have human ears no matter what.

She's definitely one of mine, too. I bounce around between her, Yang, and Pyrrha.

Like you mentioned in the disclamer, you need more highlights, especially when drawing something dark since shadows will do absolutely nothing there. Still, you got the proportions and the face done pretty well, and that's the biggest part of it.

As for colorblindness, what might help is to separate the image into three R-G-B images and adjust them separately, then combine into one. Better yet draw everything in color, then switch to grayscale for shadows and highlights.
I don't do much drawing on the computer, but in 'real life' i have an LED light that can change color. Setting the light to red makes everything red-ish stand out while making greens darken to almost black. A green color light does the opposite. I think if you can figure out a way to do something like that on the screen it will really help you work around the color blindness.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment.

Doing shading by using greyscale is something I'm working on, and hopefully improving with, but I can see how I need more work at it. I'll keep pushing it until I'm comfortable with more dramatic shifts in value.
