Description
I'm not even going to pretend that I'd accept any pairing for Jean or Scott except each other. So, for this year's annual display of how much more into fictional romance than the real life version I am, there seemed to be no better subjects for me than these two (especially since they're both adults and alive at the same time for the first time in a while). I mean, I think it's pretty rare that we get images of them together, just enjoying one another. Plenty of images of them superheroing and saving the world together, but not just.... together. I was aiming for "Adorably in Love," but given the look Jean is giving Scott, I may have hit on something more intense.I'm not thrilled with Jean's left hand, but I'm pretty sure I could have worked on this for another twenty years and wouldn't get it any better, so here we are. I do like how her hair turned out, though, and I don't usually do straight, long hair. (Fun fact: I actually prefer her banged looks, but in this setup they would have blocked her eyes, so... nope.)
Anyhow, I hope I did these two justice. Any comments, tips, or critiques are welcome and appreciated!
And happy Valentines Day!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll start with a gray base and lighten or darken shades from there, and then add a color overlay (and, for some skin tones, attempt to add a blue overlay to make it less “hot”). I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

I haven't read any (yet) to be fair, but yes, there does seem to be a sense that things are a bit odd, and there weren't many fans of the insinuation that Jean is in a polyamorous relationship with Scott and Wolverine. (Nothing against poly relationships; I've just personally never liked the Jean/Logan pairing in any incarnation.)

If have been that way since their Teens, then they would/should be/stay that way and not I mean NOT let Ol weapon X get in-between them, especially if Jean is the one playing Beauty and the Beast with the two.

Great artwork deserves a great song to go with it:
Get Closer-Seals & Crofts feat. Carolyn Willis (Dash Crofts & Jim Seals)
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to love, love only you, then love only me
Darlin' if you want me to see, see only you, then see only me
There's a line, I can't cross over
It's no good for me and it's no good for you
And there's a feelin', deep down inside me
I can't explain it and you're wondering why
You say we've been like strangers
But I'm not the others you can wrap 'round your fingers
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to love, love only you, then love only me
Darlin' if you want me to see, see only you, then see only me
There was a time, when I would come runnin'
I'd drop everything for the touch of your hand in mine
You were blind
And now you regret it
'Cause I can't forget it
It's locked in my mind
And I can't go on livin'
Day to day
Wondering if we'll be here tomorrow
People change and you're changin'
And I've given you my all
There's no more to borrow
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me
Darlin' if you want me to love, love only you, then love only me
Darlin' if you want me to see, see only you, then see only me
Get Closer

Thank you, and, yes, I agree -- that was a dick move. I have no idea why Jean and Scott seem to have to deal with so much crap in regard to Emma and Logan that no other character couples do. Like... just let them be.
That said, their reunion at the end of Uncanny X-Men (before the Powers of X/House of X started up) seemed like a pretty solid "Yup, they're together" to me.

There was always something about this I always liked. You're right though, it's rare to see Jean and Scott enjoy each other's time when not doing their usual "superhero" stuff. This brings on such a romantic feeling that it's sad how things always turn up for them knowing their personal problems like brothers and being possessed by a galactic entity that wants to destroy the universe.

So much has happened within the comics that it's hard to make heads or tails about the things that have happened. If only the movies would help make their relationships more compatible instead of having them go through a tangle of events and stuff.

Hello, I´m from . ^-^
Let me say that this are one of the most perfect faces and proportions I´ve ever seen so far!
The girls expression and how she grabs his shirt are jus badass! They seem to have a real close bound to each other and it´s so cute how they are head to head. X3
You made a super great job with all those wrinkles on his shirt and the shading there! I´m also loving how the girls hair is laying around her shoulders! *-*
The colors you used were also really pleasant to look at. Not too pale, not too saturated.
Honestly, the only thing I can critique was the plants in the background, which don´t seem to fit in the style.
I recommened to make them in same style and adding shadows on the wall, so it looks like they were really growing up to it.
I seldome get touched by flat/semi flat colored art, but this really doesn´t let me look away tbh. The emotions are so true and the anatomy is so great!
Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and letting me know what you think, I really appreciate it!
I understand why you don't think the ivy in the background fits the rest of the picture -- I think I may be notorious for lazy backgrounds. Even if I refrained from inking them, though, I think you're right in that I could have at least done more with the shadows they cast on the wall. I'll keep stuff like that in mind for the future.
Thank you again -- this was great to learn!

About the background - I feel you! Sometimes it helps to let a painting rest and continue drawing the background when you´ve relaxed from the effort you´ve already put into the foreground. Though I also know the feeling to want to get things done and can´t wait to upload it. TnT
Anyways, keep up the great work! :3

Hey! It's Rachel Chen from
!
"Get A Little Bit Closer: Jean and Scott " is a beautiful digital illustration that presents a couple who is jokingly fighting and probably whispering sweet and spicy things to each other. Even though the artist is red-green colorblind, the color composition is good. The woman reminds me a bit of Arielle from Disney because of her hairstyle and sweater color. Her face is drawn really well, in a cartoon yet slightly realistic style. I love her expression which clearly indicates that she is close enough to the man to grab him like that and whisper things to him. As for the man, he looks more realistic than cartoon, however, he fits the overall style of the picture. His anatomy is well drawn and also the folds on his shirt. What I would spend more time working on in this picture is the background that's very simple, especially the vine leaves. Alternatively, you can also apply gaussian blur on the background so as not to distract the watcher from looking at the scene. Overall, it's a nice piece of art that fits the Valentines mood that presents a couple who is enjoying the time with each other. Keep drawing~!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this! I'm glad the picture worked for you, and I love your interpretation of their relationship (I was intending to show their wedding rings in the image, but... neither left-handed ring finger is showing where the rings would be), and it's pretty much spot on. I love the comparison of Jean's hair to Ariel's, though that's completely unintentional (justa product of the touching-foreheads pushing her hair back).
And thank you for the tip about the gaussian blur -- I do use blurs at times for backgrounds, but chose not to for this one. I think I use circular blurs, though, so maybe I'll switch over when I use them. (This background is just stuck between "I need *something* behind them" and "I really don't want to spend more than twenty minutes on it.") A little bit of the blur might have been a nice touch, though -- you're right.
So thank you, again -- I really appreciate everything you said here.

The line quality is really striking here, especially the more you zoom in. I may not be the most helpful with colors since I have all 3 cones (and am considering getting tested for tetrachromia I think it's called...) but: reds are so tricky, even for people who aren't RG-colorblind, but one of the ways I've tried to work around lighter reds staying warm is by fading them to orange or gold. (And yes I realize that that would be a very difficult difference to tell...just a suggestion to maybe play around with in the future? )
But regardless, limited palettes can work perfectly fine! And this one does, with the way you've balanced them. Only thing that really stands out to me that could use some work is, it might be worth throwing in some finer lines into the hair, at least where you're trying to show highlights. Even the softest hair shines in individual strands, which gives it that sharper and, in some lights even metallic, look.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! Okay, first, a question -- when you're talking about warmer reds, what do you mean by "fading the, to orange or gold"? Like, do you use orange and gold as the highlighting colors?
And I get what you're saying about adding fine lines to the hair in highlighted areas -- that's always an inner struggle with me, between the part of me that wants to let the subtle blending lines do that work, and the part of me that's been told to add more lines on top of that. Some day I'll hit the right balance, hopefully. But I do know that sometimes I need to be more proactive about breaking up those chunks of color.
And I'm really glad to hear the line work looks good -- that was a bit of a struggle for me in the past, so it's nice to hear I may be getting the hang of it.
Thank you again -- I really appreciate the tip and compliments!

Yeah, most red hair irl is a lot more orange than people think, so when light hits it, it really shows.
It gets easier I started learning how hair flows and how to shade those curves in the light by playing around with satin ribbons, and figured out more and more from there. (I also get to just look in the mirror because I have really low-tension curly hair, so its straight at the top, wavier towards the bottom, and then turns into sausage curls. XD)
I would never have guessed lines were a struggle for you. In this piece they flow very well.
You're welcome!

I'm RG "color blind" as well (though I am still trying to come up with a better term for myself since "blind" is not exactly how I'd describe it but more like certain palets are dialed into a different direction. Not always "desaturated" ... boy it's difficult to explain)
But anyway, just saying that because the palet seems really effective to me and you did a good job. Their skin is arguably slightly on the pink side, but it could just be my monitor. And iPhones will make things even more hot and some laptops will make things blue. My temptation would be to desaturate their skin by just a few little points and yellow the skin by just a few little points. And when using a full palet my temptation is to always make people have different skin tones because everybody's color is at least a bit different, even between relatives.
But on the other hand it's comics. It really doesn't flippin matter. Graphic striking images are what they're all about in the big comics game. Plus lighting conditions change "absolute" spectrum readings constantly. And we obviously just have a kind of warm thing going on here. (Hot even?! hehe) AND and and ... art. It's art!
The red hair is only a bit muddy because JPG compression infamously doesn't handle reds very well and so you get some blockiness and other very slight color issues in the red. If you saved as PNG you'd get a crisper image for this.
It's really good, and I recognized the characters despite it being your own take on them. Your highlights are awesome here, I wouldn't mess with that unless you want some fun harsh lighting from an alternative light source. Your natural lighting is awesomely skilled, I am envious. It's probably a great benefit that you start with a gray base, but you have great skill in that area.
Also, one more comment. I think us RG and BB "differently perceptive" folx haha ... well, I think we are doing pretty good despite it all. Even if it seems we sometimes have to try a little harder than others. I like to think it's a benefit not just to our art but to our viewers.

An optometrist I spoke with once suggested the phrase "color deficient sight" was more accurate. But it's a bit of a mouthful to say, so I still go with colorblind in passing, and then get more in detail when people inevitably start asking what color my or their shirt is...
That's an interesting suggestion in regard to saving as a PNG. Maybe I'll give it a try -- I've just always used jpg by default, but now that you mention it, png seems to be fairly prevalent, too.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write all of this -- I really appreciate it, and I'll keep what you said about skintones in mind in the future.

Scott was a tough one to get to a point where I felt comfortable with him -- you don't realize how much character a person's eyes hold until you can't draw them.
For the M-Jay vibe, I blame Marvel. I'm pretty sure one out of three women on Earth 616 are green-eyed redheads. But if I drew she and Jean together, I think MJ would have a cuter button nose and probably a rounder face/head.
And just as an example of how many green-eyed reds there are, you could almost make a whole team:

Oh man, don't even worry about it, I know that Marvel is chronic with that shit haha. Almost as much as they are about putting their female super heroes into fetish gear. But yeah, I remember that time when they all but explicitly stated M-jay and Jean's similarities that one time they had Logan hit on her when he was swapped into Pete's body (which of course isn't creepy or disturbing at all considering she was a highschooler at the time). And then of course there's the disturbingly odepic reveal of Aunt May being Mom May and having looked basically exactly like m-jay when she was younger >_>.
And yeah I can totally see that being an issue with Scott, especially in drawing him at profile like that.

And man, tell me about it. It always kind of surprised me how they thought it would be a good idea to make the pg-13 movies revolve around the most consistently amoral and self destructive member of the core team. But hey, it was the 2000s and the Edge demanded its sacrifices to be appeased I suppose. Much like 'attitude' claimed the 90s before it haha.
