Description
Fun Fact: The teal portion of her hair looks flat-out grey to me. Before getting started on this piece, I decided that I wanted to do another young woman with funky-colored hair, and I felt that I'd gone to the well of blue and purple too often. So I opted to throw some green into the mix, and thought teal would be fun -- only to realize I couldn't actually see it. But, not being one to give up too easily, I pushed forward anyway and here you have her. Hopefully the teal and the blue make for a pretty combination to those of you who can actually see them like they should be seen.
The lipstick color was a bit of a guess -- I'm just hoping it fits the girl's skin tone and hair, as well as the shirt and it's minimal design along the trim.
Let me know whether you think this all works -- any comments, tips, or critiques are more than welcome!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll start with a gray base and lighten or darken shades from there, and then add a color overlay (and, for some skin tones, attempt to add a blue overlay to make it less “hot”). I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I'll try to keep the issues you raised in mind for future projects -- i know including even subtle face wrinkles is something I struggle with -- I always call to mind a comic book artist (It may have been Adam Hughes) I heard say to use wrinkles sparingly since they can really age a female subject. But I'll work on that.
Thank you, again. I appreciate it.

That's an interesting technique -- I hadn't heard it before. I'll give it a shot in the future.

If I can ask, what about her lips struck you as unnatural? Knowing what to look for would help me out.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and to let me know what I did right -- I really appreciate that!

Hah! Okay, thank you for going into more detail. I forget the exact reasoning I chose that specific lipstick color, but it was probably to go with her hair. (Because I'm colorblind, I generally avoid getting too detailed with women's make-up, so maybe that just makes the lipstick stand out more in a not-good way.)

Hey!! I'm here from ProjectComment
This piece is amazing!! Especially because you're red-green colorblind It's so impressive that you're working through it and trying to improve your use of colors. I think they look pretty nice here. They all fit a certain theme. The only thing I would suggest is that you have a wide range of values and hues going on here-- teal, green, bluer blue, purple, and pink, and then brown for her skin too. I would suggest sticking with cool tones or warm tones, and keep it down to only a few repeating shades. For example, you could make her hair light blue, the dyed part darker blue, the shirt blueish-purple, and the lipstick purple to make it feel a little more consistent. But obviously it's hard for you, and I think you did great!
The shading on the hair is really amazing! I think there you have just the right balance of values, and it looks interesting, bouncy, and fun. The anatomy is also really good-- the only thing I can see is that her left eye looks a little wonky (maybe it's too far in and close to the nose) but generally it's super well-done. I also really love the subtle trim on her shirt. The skin could have a little more variation of shades, but I understand that's hard too, and it really looks quite good! Maybe adding some highlights on her face, especially her nose, would do the trick.
But overall, this looks so amazing!! Looking forward to seeing more of your art.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I can see what you're saying in regard to the number of colors I use -- that's something I do struggle with because my natural tendency would be to stick with one or two colors, making it seem rather monotone, so I try to force myself to use different colors that (I'm told) work together. But maybe i went too far with that this time around. :-/
I'm really glad her hair came across as bouncy to you; that's definitely something I was aiming for. But I'll keep in mind to try to use the same variance (though maybe not quite as great) on skintone in future works, too. Because of how most skintones can look burned when darkened, that does become a huge challenge for me due to how hard it can be for me to add the proper amount of blue to the shadows so I'll need to keep at it.
Thank you, again, for taking the time. I really appreciate it!

Don't worry; I knew exactly what you were getting at -- and kind of like if you were driving with your eyes closed, you'd want your copilot's instructions/advice to be as detailed as possible, so I appreciate any time someone gives advice in regard to colors.

of course!! I understand that it's difficult, I don't want to make you feel like you're doing something terribly wrong. These are just a few suggestions, and it really looks great overall! I wish I had that kind of ability XD good luck!

Well I wish you could see that teal, because holy crap I love her hair. The color, of course, but also the shading, shape of the waves and style, the bit of gradation in the bangs...nicely done! The lipstick color works in the sense that she seems the type to like bright, bold pinks (it comes off as "hot pink"). Nicely shaded, too. Her top is amazing, with that bit of detailing in the piping. I want it. I want to look as good in it as she does XD
A couple things to play around with: You're already amazing at getting eyes to seem round and 3-dimensional with well-placed light, but I think you could be more bold with the shadows in the irises. One thing I've learned is to use more of the color wheel - not just darker/lighter versions of the base color, but also dark/light shades of neighboring colors. For blue eyes, you could swing left toward indigo/purple for the shadows and right toward teal/green for the highlights, for example. I know shades and hues are tricky to work with when you're colorblind, so I'm trying to be as specific as possible!
The only other thing I'd play with (and goodness knows most of us need to work on this, including me) is combating "same face syndrome" - the tendency to use the same face/eye/nose shapes for most characters. Most of your ladies kinda remind me of Audrey Tautou in the shape of their features. Not at all a bad thing, mind you! But it'd be interesting to see you try, say, a Meryl Streep or Kate Winslet nose, or a pointed chin or round jaw. In fact, I challenge you to draw Meryl Streep! (Feel free to ignore the challenge.)

Thank you so much for all of this! Those are two great points in the last two paragraphs. You're right that using different colors in the eyes would be difficult for me, but it's something I can play with in pieces where I don't expect to draw the subject again. For example, if I played with the colors in Hazel's eyes, I'd become obsessed with getting them exactly right every time I drew her, and with the different angels and lighting involved, I think I'd go crazy. But there's a website I found that provides colors that work together when you input one (you can chose opposite, complementary, or "triad" and so forth -- www.sessions.edu/color-calcula…) so it might something I can play with in pieces like this one or Girl with Unicorn Hair. You finally got me to start using deeper shading last year, so this could be the next step you boot me on.
For the same face... yeah, that's something I do try to keep an eye on, but usually when drawing repeating characters or groups of people. I may have gotten lazy and fallen back to the face shape I find attractive in real life for the Randoms, and I should probably stop that. Or at least mix it up. Maybe I'll take you up on the Meryl challenge, though there aren't as many reference photos of her online as I'd like... Curse those pre-Internet days of celebrity!

The lighting and shading on this are solid, man! Even the way she's drawn and colored is really neat touches too.

Dang Kevin! Looks awesome - super job! The kicker for me (I'm such a nerd for details) is the fantastic way you captured the small of her back. Particularly in this half-turned position, that seems really tough to get right but everything's perfect. That one part, to me, kind of highlights the beautiful (and sexy) femininity she's exuding here. And I completely agree with DannyAndYoko - she's hot! And that sly look she's shooting back at the viewer - very well done. (-:

Thank you very much! You always pick up on the little details that I love myself, so I'm glad the small of her back stood out to you. I was originally planning to have a complex tattoo there (all up her back, actually), but decided it might take away from everything else. Sometimes less is more (I'm one of those people who rarely adds much seasoning to his food, and I think that personality trait carries over into my art.) And managing to draw women who are sexy without being cheesecake is one of my goals, so it's great to hear that I hit on that.
Thank you, again!
