Description

Happy holidays, everyone! Just in time for Christmas, here’s Ada and Synthia taking a break from the annual holiday party Ada’s parents throw. I wanted to try out a scene with some colorful lights up close and in the distance so they’d be out of focus, but then realized that the classier places where this kind of party would be held don’t usually have colorful lights, so… plain white it is.

As usual, I’m not thrilled with the background, but it’s based off a real place and I did as much work on it as I was willing. If I had a couple more weeks to work on it, I could probably get it better, but, as it is, I spent two and a half weeks or so on this piece as a whole and I think that’s enough time. I figure the background is balanced with how the girls turned out – you won’t find them gussied up very often, but I think they pull it off nicely (Especially given their creator has no idea what’s what when it comes to women’s fashion).

Anyhow, please let me know what you think – all comments, critiques, and tips are welcome and appreciated.

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

Awww look at the cuties! I think their outfits work well, and given their poses, it's not the focus of the piece anyway. I do like the necklace Ada is wearing!

I like how the background came out! While I definitely understand the whole "classier places wouldn't have colorful lights" thing, I almost wish you had done the colored lights. But that's me. I do think that one thing that could make the lights more realistic is to warm them up a little bit - add a touch of yellow or something to them, since real white Christmas lights are usually on the warm side. I do love the out-of-focus quality though!

However, I also totally get the feeling of "nooooo I don't want to do anything else with this!" There comes a point where you look at a piece and have to say...enough. I'm done. I wonder if there's a term for that, like creative fatigue or something...

Anywho, a very Merry Christmas and overall Happy Holiday to you and yours!

And thank you again, for taking the time to let me know how this worked out -- I'm glad their dresses aren't crimes against fashion

The lights idea (adding yellow) would probably be a good idea. I'll try to keep that in mind in the future and use a yellow screen with low opacity like I do with blue on the flesh tones. And, yeah, not having colorful lights bummed me out a little, too. Maybe I was a bit too beholden to the real world in that regard -- I could easily have an in-story excuse for colorful lights, like Ada's parents are influential enough that the places puts them up especially for this one party because it's been held there ever since Ada was little and, damnit, she wanted colorful lights back then!

And creative fatigue sounds like a good phrasing to me. Let's go with that.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours, as well!
